Alkylaminoalkyl Esters Of 2-Thiophene Carboxylic And Furoic Acids, Henry Alouis Rutter Jr.

Master's Theses

The association of local anesthetic activity with alkaninoalkyl ester of aromatic carbonyl acids has been well susbstantietes. Compounds obtained as varieties of the "anesthesiophoric" group are usually capable of some degree of local anesthetic activity.

Alkylaminoalkyl Aryoxyacetates, William Kenneth Easley Jul 1947

Alkylaminoalkyl Aryoxyacetates, William Kenneth Easley

Master's Theses

Numerous inInvestigations into the preparation, properties, and effects plant growth substances have been carried out. It has been shown that phenoxyacetic acids, napthoxyacetic acids, esters, anides and salts of phenoxyacetic acids and certain substituted products of these acids are plant growth promoting substances.

It is the purpose ot this work to produce esters of phenoxyacetic and napthoxyacetic acids which contain a secondary amino group and as a result of their ability to form acid salts, such as hydrochlorides, water soluble compounds. These compounds would be readily applicable to plants in sprays.

Heats Of Solution In Liquid Ammonia, Dorsey O. Thomas Jr.

Honors Theses

The present work consists of measurements of the heats of solution of guanadine hydrocholride in this solvent. Also there will be presented a detailed description of the method of operation of the calorimeter which is being used.

Methylation Of Phenols, John James Adamzevich Jun 1947

Methylation Of Phenols, John James Adamzevich

Honors Theses

Although a good deal of work has been done lately on the methylation of phenols this is still a comparatively unknown field. The purpose of this investigation was to study the effect of temperature on the amount and type of product formed.

Solubility Determinations In Anhydrous Ethylenediamine, Joseph Hooker Dusenbury Jun 1947

Solubility Determinations In Anhydrous Ethylenediamine, Joseph Hooker Dusenbury

Honors Theses

Although the preparation of ethylenediamine is reported in the literature as early as 1853, the first isolation of the pure anhydrous compound was performed by A. W. Hoffmann in 1858. He prepared the pure diamine by repeated distillations from metallic sodium, and reported on the great stability of the 111ono-hydrate as a hindrance to obtaining the compound in a pure state, More recently, in 1934, Bailar at the University of Illinois reacted the crude diamine with zinc oxalate to give a salt which is stable at room temperature and may be heated to 200° in vacuo (all temperatures in degrees …

The Preparation Of Phenyldibromnitromethane, Edwin L. Mincher Jun 1947

The Preparation Of Phenyldibromnitromethane, Edwin L. Mincher

Honors Theses

The purpose of this research was to prepare plenyldibromnitromethane. Also it was desired to make some physical measurements on the compound if the compound could be made in sufficient quantity. So far as the author can find out, phenyldibromnitromethane is not described in the literature.

A Study Of The Action Of Potassium Hypobromite And Sodium Hypochlorite On Adipamide, William Marzluff Jun 1947

A Study Of The Action Of Potassium Hypobromite And Sodium Hypochlorite On Adipamide, William Marzluff

Honors Theses

The Hoffman reaction of an amide with a hypohalite to give a primary amine in excellent yields is the basis of many syntheses in organic chemistry. This project is concerned with the study of the action of sodium hypobromite and sodium hypochloride on adipamide. Isolation of reaction products, if possible, identification of reaction products, if possible, identification of the products, and determination of the yield of the reaction were desired. It was hope that a diamine, putresecine, would result from this reaction, and therefore the steps in isolation of the products were carried out with this in view.

A Partial Study Of The Reaction Between Pentanedione-2,4 And Formaldehyde, Joseph Anthony Sincius Jun 1947

A Partial Study Of The Reaction Between Pentanedione-2,4 And Formaldehyde, Joseph Anthony Sincius

Honors Theses

It was the purpose of this research to observe the reaction of pentanedione-2,4 with formaldehyde, and to study the principle reaction product. The secondary purpose of the research was, if possible, to obtain a cyclic compound like 1,3 dihydrorescrcinol.

Dialysis Of Silicic Acid Gels, Arthur C. Glamm Jun 1947

Dialysis Of Silicic Acid Gels, Arthur C. Glamm

Honors Theses

The primary purpose of this investigation was to prove or disprove the existence of an equilibrium between polysilicic acid molecules and simple silicic acid molecules in a set silicic acid gel. The investigation involved the controlled dialysis of typical gels from their time mixing, through the time of set and into the aging period. Since numerous silica determinations were to be made, it was thought advisable to disregard the time consuming gravimetric method. The secondary purpose of this investigation was therefore, to determine if the colorimetric method for the determination of silica, as devised by Winkler (1) in 1914 and …

The Preparation Of Certain Organic Chloroformates And Carbonates, Robert E. Brailsford Apr 1947

The Preparation Of Certain Organic Chloroformates And Carbonates, Robert E. Brailsford

Theses and Dissertations

This brief discussion and research paper attempts to correlate a large portion of the information about the preparation of known organic chloroformates and carbonates, to point out the present and possible future uses of these compounds, and to contribute some information concerning the preparation of a number of the organic carbonates. A comparison of the different methods of preparation is made.

The Separation Of The Rare Earths Neodymium And Praseodymium By Precipitation As Chloride, Stanley Milton Kulifay Jan 1947

The Separation Of The Rare Earths Neodymium And Praseodymium By Precipitation As Chloride, Stanley Milton Kulifay

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this thesis is to provide a means of preparing highly purified samples of neodymium and praseodymium compounds when the material to be refined already exists in a state of approximate purity. The method described cannot be profitably used to purify the individual rare earths without first concentrating them. The process is not intended to be quantitative, for it is a fractional crystallization technique using a concentrated hydrochloric acid medium"--Introduction, page 1.

An Investigation Of The Colorimetric Methods For The Determination Of Fluorine By The Zirconium Alizarin Sulfonate Method, William Lewis Break Jan 1947

An Investigation Of The Colorimetric Methods For The Determination Of Fluorine By The Zirconium Alizarin Sulfonate Method, William Lewis Break

Masters Theses

"There has been a need for a rapid and an accurate method for the determination of fluorine in its compounds. Both gravimetric and volumetric methods have been studied, but both methods were time consuming or inaccurate or both. Colorimetric methods had been studied before F. Richter developed his method but none had been reported to be as satisfactory as his method. This method was investigated because it was thought that F. Richter's method would be a satisfactory colorimetric determination for fluorine in its compounds"--Introduction, page 1.
