Isotope Harvesting At Heavy-Ion Fragmentation Facilities, Tara Elise Mastren

Isotope harvesting from heavy-ion fragmentation facilities is a potential source of isotopes of interest for applications research. With the upgrade of the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory (NSCL) to the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) usable quantities of many isotopes of interest will be produced and available for harvest from an aqueous beam dump. If available, these isotopes would be of interest to a broad range of applications such as medicine, geology, and stockpile stewardship. Preliminary experiments were performed at the NSCL in order to determine the feasibility of isotope harvesting at (FRIB).

Nanoparticles (NPs) are being investigated widely for use in biomedical applications such as imaging, drug delivery, and cancer therapy due to their small size and readily tunable properties. The ability to accurately characterize NPs and monitor their spatial distributions is highly desirable for effective use of NPs and evaluation of their potential adverse environmental, health, and safety effects. In this dissertation, a simple, fast, and sensitive method based on laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (LDI-MS) to characterize and track NPs in biological systems has been developed. An increased interest has been placed on the miniaturization of chemical processes. Focus is placed on rapid chemical analysis, decreased operation cost, minimal generation of chemical waste, and reduced sample size. Presented here is an approached the goal of 'miniaturization' through two distinct areas of analytical chemistry: 1) employing capillary-channeled polymer (C-CP) fibers as a stationary phase in micro-SPE (solid phase extraction) tips for the extraction of proteins from buffered solutions (i.e. biofluids) with analysis by mass spectrometry (MS) and 2) the development of the liquid sampling-atmospheric pressure glow discharge (LS-APGD) as an excitation source for elemental analysis.
