Enhancing Compatibility And Mechanical Properties Of Natural Rubber Composites, Krisma Yessi Sianturi, Adam Febriyanto Nugraha, Belle Kristaura, Mochamad Chalid

Journal of Materials Exploration and Findings

Pure natural rubber (NR) exhibits low mechanical properties, necessitating the incorporation of additives like vulcanizing agents and fillers. Carbon black and silica, conventional fillers, are relatively expensive and not environmentally friendly. This study explores using Oil Palm Empty Fruit Bunch (OPEFB) fiber as an affordable, abundant, and biodegradable alternative filler for NR. However, compatibility issues arise between the nonpolar NR and the polar OPEFB fiber. A latex-starch hybrid coupling agent (CA (NR-St)) was added to the composite formulation to address this. NR, OPEFB fiber, and the coupling agent were mixed using an open roll mill with a 10 phr OPEFB …

Effect Of Okra Bast Fillers On Biodegradation Properties Of Poly(Vinyl Alcohol) Composites, Gazi Md Arifuzzaman Khan, Nazi̇re Deni̇z Yilmaz Jan 2023

Effect Of Okra Bast Fillers On Biodegradation Properties Of Poly(Vinyl Alcohol) Composites, Gazi Md Arifuzzaman Khan, Nazi̇re Deni̇z Yilmaz

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

This paper focuses on the effect of okra bast fillers on biodegradation of poly(vinyl alcohol) composites. Fibers were obtained from okra plant stems via biological degumming and subjected to different chemical treatments such as scouring, alkalizing, maleic anhydride treatment, and vinyl acetate grafting. The fibers were ground and PVA-okra bast filler composites were produced at 20 wt% fiber load via the solution casting method. The obtained composites were tested in terms of mechanical properties and exposed to biodegradation in soil. Effects of okra bast filler addition and chemical treatments on changes in mass, breaking strength, elasticity modulus, and breaking elongation …

Effect Of Size-Graded And Polydopamine-Coated Halloysite Nanotubes On Fundamental Properties Of Low-Density Polyethylene Nanocomposite Film, Cüneyt Erdi̇nç Taş Jan 2023

Effect Of Size-Graded And Polydopamine-Coated Halloysite Nanotubes On Fundamental Properties Of Low-Density Polyethylene Nanocomposite Film, Cüneyt Erdi̇nç Taş

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

In this study, some of the critical fundamental properties, which are holding importance in usage areas, of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) film were studied by embedding size-graded and polydopamine-coated halloysite nanotubes into the polymer matrix. This concept evaluated the importance of the well-dispersion of nanoparticles in the composite system and interfacial adhesion between nanofiller and polymer matrix on the degree of crystallinity and mechanical properties. For this purpose, halloysite nanotubes, coated with polydopamine and size graded afterward, were integrated into the LDPE matrix by the twin-screw extrusion process, following which, nanocomposite films were prepared by film-blown technique. Both effects of halloysite …
