Climate Change From Oxygen Isotopic Variation Of Pore Water From Sediments In Punderson Lake, Northeast Ohio, Rachel Daley, Fasong Yuan
Climate Change From Oxygen Isotopic Variation Of Pore Water From Sediments In Punderson Lake, Northeast Ohio, Rachel Daley, Fasong Yuan
Undergraduate Research Posters 2013
The environment in Ohio has changed over time. The hydroclimate, which is the climate of the water, shows changes from the Industrial Revolution to the present. Evidence for these changes can be found in levels of δ18O and δ2H isotopes in the layers of sediment and water in the lakes of Northeast Ohio. Mass spectrometry can be used to test the levels of δ18O and δ2H isotopes from pore water samples within sediment cores. In this study, surface soil and water samples were collected from cores in Punderson Lake at Punderson State Park in Newbury, Ohio. Pore water was extracted …
Comparison Of Arsenic Uptake And Oxidative Stress By Christmas Fern And Spider Brake Fern, Paul Lkanich, Pratheek Koneru, Robert Wei
Comparison Of Arsenic Uptake And Oxidative Stress By Christmas Fern And Spider Brake Fern, Paul Lkanich, Pratheek Koneru, Robert Wei
Undergraduate Research Posters 2013
Plants are widely considered the most cost effective and environmentally friendly way to clean soils and waters contaminated with toxic metals, e.g. arsenic and mercury. We have focused our research on the uptake of arsenic and its biochemical effect on two species of fern, Spider brake fern and Christmas fern. Spider brake fern is known to be capable of accumulating significant amounts of arsenic. We wish to determine whether the levels of arsenic uptake in Christmas fern are comparable to Spider Brake fern (>1g kg-1 plant biomass) when both are grown under the same conditions. Another aim of the …
Organic Wastewater Chemicals In Silver Bow Creek - Butte To Warm Springs Ponds, Heidi Reid, Katie Hailer, Ph.D., Steve Parker, Ph.D.
Organic Wastewater Chemicals In Silver Bow Creek - Butte To Warm Springs Ponds, Heidi Reid, Katie Hailer, Ph.D., Steve Parker, Ph.D.
2013 Undergraduate Research
The purpose of this study is to detail and analyze the distribution, concentration, and loads of 5 organic compounds along Silver Bow Creek in Butte, Montana from the Municipal Wastewater treatment plant to the Warm Springs Ponds. The chemicals analyzed include Carbamazepine (pharmaceutical), Miconazole (fungicide) and three antibiotics – Sulfamethoxazole, Thiabendazole, and Ciprofloxacin.
This project begins a 2 year study to analyze 6 additional compounds (11 compounds total), to develop an effective method to detail and analyze OWCs using Mass Spectrometer/Liquid chromatography system, and to aid in assessment of aquatic health and ongoing restoration work. The EPA method 1694 was …

Cristal (Chemistry Resources And Instructional Strategies For Teaching All Learners For Ms & Hs Chemistry), Jody Stone
K-12 Curriculum Supplements
The CRISTAL program was developed for the purpose of (1) increasing the number of quality laboratory experiences carried out in high school chemistry classes (2) providing learning activities designed to stimulate the development of reasoning/problem-solving skills and (3) providing chemistry teachers with ideas and strategies for creating a more student-centered classroom. The intended audience is all students enrolled in high school chemistry, especially those students needing additional motivation for learning chemistry.
The CRISTAL materials include a teacher's resource manual containing over 100 activities. These laboratories are arranged in a learning cycle format involving exploratory and application activities. One or more …
Comparison Of Two Methods Of Monitoring Corn Mash At Corn Plus Ethanol Plant, Lanay Walker
Comparison Of Two Methods Of Monitoring Corn Mash At Corn Plus Ethanol Plant, Lanay Walker
Undergraduate Research Symposium 2013
In the ethanol industry, several variables affect the amount and grade of ethanol that is produced which affects a plant’s ability to make a profit. This research is focused on one of those variables, ‘corn mash solid content’, which must be closely monitored before the fermentation step. If the mash out of the mix tank is the wrong consistency, the alpha-amylase and gluco-amylase enzymes will not efficiently break the starch into simple sugars that yeast can consume which will decrease the amount of ethanol produced. The mash solid and moisture content is measured daily in order to ensure that the …

Tb207: A Manual For Remote Sensing Of Maine Lake Clarity, Ian M. Mccullough, Cynthia S. Loftin, Steven A. Sader
Tb207: A Manual For Remote Sensing Of Maine Lake Clarity, Ian M. Mccullough, Cynthia S. Loftin, Steven A. Sader
Technical Bulletins
The purpose of this manual is to support use of satellite-based remote sensing for statewide lake water-quality monitoring in Maine. The authors describe step-by-step methods that combine Landsat and MODIS satellite data with field-collected Secchi disk data for statewide assessment of lake water clarity. Landsat can be simultaneously used to assess more than Maine 1,000 lakes ≥ 8 ha, whereas MODIS can be used to assess a maximum of 364 lakes ≥ 100 ha (250-m image resolution) or 83 lakes ≥ 400 ha (500-m image resolution). Although the methods were specifically developed for Maine, other states or non-Maine agencies may …
