For several years research has been done at Union College investigating the possibility of using Portland Cement as a chemical raw material. Investigations by Clark in 1951 indicated that vigorous reactions take place when Portland cement and strong acids are mixed.

This study of sodium methyl siliconate is the first done with this compound at Union College. It was believed that gels could be produced with sodium methyl siliconate and the object of this work was to verify the assumption. After the gels were obtained, they were to be investigated in the same way as many previous workers have done with sodium silicate.

Since discovery of radioactivity at the turn of the century, the use of radioactive isotopes has become increasingly significant to research in the fields of chemistry, biology, botany, and medicine. An important use of these radioactive isotopes is the tracer or indicator method. For example, a portion of radioactive potassium may be added to a sample of of stable potassium to be studied. The fact that a given isotope is radioactive does not, in most cases, affect its chemical properties. The purpose of this research is to study the reaction between ethyl alcohol and phenol over a chemically activated alumina catalyst at several temperatures. The reaction of phenol and ethyl alcohol is also studied over the support used in preparing the activated catalyst to determine the catalytic activity of the support. An attempt is also made to correlate the data obtained by previous workers at Union College, who have studied the reaction between phenol and methyl alcohol and the reaction between phenol and ethyl alcohol.
