Collaborative Chemical Information Literacy: Is It "Scholarly?", Barbara C. Harvey

Barbara C. Harvey

This symposium illustrates a collaborative classroom activity that incorporates information literacy into an introductory chemistry course. The primary learning outcomes of the activity are to understand the peer-review process, knowing how to locate original research articles based on “clues” in a general news article, and how to differentiate between popular and scholarly periodicals. Students work in small groups in a highly-collaborative classroom setting. Each group is given a recent chemistry-related news item, and must determine how and where to find the original research article the news item is based on. Emphasis is placed on identifying original, peer-reviewed research publications. Each …

Synthesis And Characterization Of A Copper(I)-Phenyl Complex, Max Cushner, Thabiso Kunene May 2014

Synthesis And Characterization Of A Copper(I)-Phenyl Complex, Max Cushner, Thabiso Kunene

CLAS: Colby Liberal Arts Symposium

Compounds or complexes combining an organic species and a copper ion are amongst the most widely used organometallic reagents in synthetic organic chemistry. However, the chemistry for such organocopper compounds is underdeveloped including that for copper(I)-arene complexes, which are quite rare. Nonetheless, once the chemical properties of such copper-arene complexes are better understood, it will be easier to find uses for them, for instance as catalysts. Previous work on this project has produced evidence that copper(I)-arene complexes bearing phenyl and naphthyl groups behave differently from one another in arene replacement reactions. Thus, the phenyl does not seem to bind as …

Combustion Products Of Ethyl Tert-Butyl Ether Using Synchrotron Photoionization, Rong Yao, Martin Ng, David Osborn, Craig Taatjes, Giovanni Meloni Apr 2014

Creative Activity and Research Day - CARD

The photolytically Cl initiated oxidation reaction of ETBE was investigated at the Advanced Light Source located in the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Using the multiplex photoionization mass spectrometer data were collected at the low pressure (4-8 Torr) and temperature (298 – 700 K) regimes. Data analysis was performed via characterization of the reaction species photoionization spectra and kinetic traces. A reaction schematic including branching fractions determination is presented and discussed.

Investigation Of Oxidation Reaction Products Of 2-Phenylethanol Using Synchrotron Photoionization, Magaly Wooten, Anthony Medrano, David Osborn, Craig Taatjes, Giovanni J. Meloni Apr 2014

Creative Activity and Research Day - CARD

Photolytically Cl-initiated oxidation reaction of 2-phenylethanol (2-PE) was carried out at the Advanced Light Source (ALS) in the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Using the multiplex photoionization mass spectrometer, coupled with the tunable vacuum ultraviolet radiation of the ALS, data were collected at low pressure (4 – 6 Torr) and temperature (298 – 550 K) regimes. Data analysis was performed via characterization of the reaction species photoionization spectra and kinetic traces.
