Film Stabilizaiton And Photophysics Of Unconventional Conjugated Polymers, Kara Martin

Doctoral Dissertations

Conjugated polymers offer a unique opportunity to develop high performing, flexible, lightweight, and large area electronic devices. With advances in conjugated polymer understanding and synthesis, the use of polymers as active layer materials in electronic applications, rather than just substrate materials, has become more promising. However, defects in morphological stability, as well as imperfect electronic understanding, are still present, limiting the use of these materials in commercializable electronics. Fundamental understanding of structure-property relationships can allow for facile synthetic solutions to major drawbacks of conjugated polymer integration in standard device architectures. Chapter 1 presents background research on the history of conjugated …

Design And Application Of Organic Electronic Materials: Pendant Tuning In Polymeric And Molecular Systems, Jonathan S. Tinkham Aug 2015

Design And Application Of Organic Electronic Materials: Pendant Tuning In Polymeric And Molecular Systems, Jonathan S. Tinkham

Doctoral Dissertations

Designing and synthesizing materials for use in organic electronic materials requires fine control over their optical and electronic properties. Variations through substitution can be used to tune solubility and electronic properties, but this can result in degradation of other properties. Substitution with orthogonal pendant groups in both molecular and polymeric systems has the potential for allowing tunability while decreasing the perturbation of other desirable properties of the parent system. This idea was explored through experimental and computational work. Computational modelling was used to understand and predict the properties of molecular and polymeric systems to narrow the wide number of choices …

Visualizing And Controlling Charge Transport In Conjugated Polymer Networks And Films, Andrew Davis Aug 2014

Visualizing And Controlling Charge Transport In Conjugated Polymer Networks And Films, Andrew Davis

Doctoral Dissertations

VISUALIZAING AND CONTROLLING CHARGE TRANSPORT IN CONJUGATED POLYMER NETWORKS AND FILMS MAY 2014 ANDREW R. DAVIS, B.S., UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA M.S., UNIVERSITY OF MASSACHUSETTS AMHERST Ph.D., UNIVERSITY OF MASSACHUSETTS AMHERST Directed by: Professor Kenneth R. Carter The desire for more commercially feasible flexible electronic plastics has led to the development of increasingly complex conjugated polymer architectures and device geometries. Through these efforts, tremendous advances have been made in the design and performance of electronic devices fabricated with solution-processable semiconducting polymers. However, none of these materials have yet reached commercial maturity, so the opportunity for their further exploration from both a …

A Study In Conjugated Polymers: From Solution Properties Of P3ht To Synthesis Of Highly Functionalized Conjugated Polymers; Moving Toward Block Copolymers And Beyond, Justin Taylor Roop May 2014

A Study In Conjugated Polymers: From Solution Properties Of P3ht To Synthesis Of Highly Functionalized Conjugated Polymers; Moving Toward Block Copolymers And Beyond, Justin Taylor Roop

Doctoral Dissertations

Conjugated polymers have been the focus of intense research for more than a decade now, and advances in this field are beginning to materialize in the production of high-efficiency opto-electronic materials that may led to the generation of energy without the need for fossil fuels. However, these current materials have not been shown to be capable of reaching efficiency levels high enough to be competitive with the siliconbased solar cells that are the standard today. We embarked on a journey in this work to help the next step in conjugated polymer research be attained. We have done just that through …

Chasing Μ, Joseph P. Cannon

Doctoral Dissertations

Conducting and semiconducting, π-conjugated polymers are promising materials for micro- and nano-optoelectronic applications because of their widely tunable physical, electrical, and optical properties. These polymers have been used to fabricate a number of electronic devices including field-effect transistors, light-emitting diodes, and photovoltaic cells. However, widespread commercial application of these devices has yet to be realized, due in part to poor electronic transport characteristics and device degradation.

Nanostructuring of conjugated polymers by various methods has demonstrated marked improvements in molecular ordering and electronic transport. In this research, nanoscale, tubular structures of semiconducting polymers fabricated by template wetting nanofabrication procedures are explored. …
