This document should be considered in its separation; there are three distinct topics contained within and three distinct chapters within the body of works. In a similar fashion, this abstract should be considered in three parts. Firstly, we explored the existence of multiply-charged atomic ions by having developed a new set of dimensional scaling equations as well as a series of relativistic augmentations to the standard dimensional scaling procedure and to the self-consistent field calculations. Cationic hydronium clusters of the form [HaOb]^c,(c>0), have been investigated. After investigating over 2000 crystal structures containing hydronium cations found in the Cambridge Structural Database. The hydronium cationic compounds that were most unusual, mischaracterized, or those of apparent aggregates, were investigated further by geometry optimization and in some cases with the Quantum Theory of Atoms in Molecules (QTAIM). The results of our investigations yielded the first reports of stable conformations of cyclic dihydronium cationic clusters. In a second investigation we reported the first theoretically confirmed transition state of a H7O3+conformer captured within a crystal. A third product from our …

In bulk heterojunction (BHJ) thin film organic photovoltaics (OPV), morphology control is critical to obtain good device efficiency. Nanoscale phase separation that creates bicontinuous interpenetrating structure on a size scale commensurate with exciton diffusion length (~10 nm) is thought to be the ideal morphology. Results obtained from this work indicate that morphology can be affected by chemical structure of the polymer, processing conditions, blending ratio and post treatments. Physical properties of the material, such as crystallinity, crystal orientation, material interactions and miscibility, surface energy and particle aggregations are critical for determining the morphology and thus the device performance. However, the performance of polymer-based devices strongly depends on the efficiency of exciton formation and dynamics that are themselves strongly sensitive to polymer molecular packing and structural order. Flory-Huggins Theory has been the basis for understanding polymer solvent and blended polymer thermodynamics for much of the last 60 years. Within this theory, a parameter (χ) [chi] was included to quantify the enthalpic energy of dispersion between distinct components. Thin film self-assembly of polymer melts and block copolymers depends critically on this parameter, and in application, χ has generally been assumed to be independent of the concentrations of the individual components of the system. We investigate the energy levels of a particle confined in the isotropic oscillator potential with a magnetic and spatially varying electric field. Here we are able to exactly solve the Schrodinger equation, using matrix methods, for the first excited states. To this end we find that the spatial gradient of the electric field acts as a magnetic field in certain circumstances. Here we present the changes in the energy levels as functions of the electric field, and other parameters.

Room temperature ionic liquids are an important class of materials due to their chemical tunability and numerous advantageous physicochemical properties. As a result, ionic liquids are currently being investigated for use in a wide array of chemical and electrochemical applications. Despite their great potential, however, the relationship between the chemical structure and physicochemical properties of ionic liquids is not well understood.

To this end, this dissertation presents experimental studies of the reorientational structural dynamics and charge transport properties of a variety of room temperature ionic liquids using quasielastic light scattering spectroscopy and broadband dielectric spectroscopy.

Organic photovoltaics (OPVs) have received a great deal of focus in recent years as a possible alternative to expensive silicon based solar technology. Current challenges for organic photovoltaics are centered around improving their lifetimes and increasing their power conversion efficiencies. One approach to improving the lifetime of such devices has been the inclusion of inorganic metal oxide layers, but interaction between the metal oxides and common conjugated polymers is not favorable. The collective oscillation of the conduction band electrons in metal nanostructures, known as plasmons, can be used to manipulate light on length scales that are smaller than the diffraction limit of visible light. In this dissertation, a correlated approach is used to probe localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPRs) in metallic nanostructures, and their application to surface-enhanced spectroscopy. This correlated approach involves the measurement of LSPRs with dark-field optical microscopy (resonance-Rayleigh scattering), and electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) in a scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM). This thesis reports a series of investigations examining the corrosion process of used nuclear fuel under permanent disposal conditions. The motivation of the project is that the safety assessment of deep geological disposal of spent nuclear fuel requires a fundamental understanding of the processes controlling fuel corrosion which could lead to the release of radionuclides to the geosphere from a failed container.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are the most abundant type of molecule present in the interstellar medium (ISM). It has been hypothesized that nitrogen replacement within a ring is likely for PAHs present in the ISM. Additionally, electrons, protons, and hydrogen atoms are readily added to or removed from PAHs creating a truly diverse set of chemistries in various interstellar regions. The presence of a nitrogen within a PAH (called a PANH herein) that is additionally dehydrogenated leads to a neutral radical with a large dipole moment. This dissertation is related to the understanding of catalytic reactions of metal oxides. For several decades, the surfaces and bulk of materials have been probed to determine additional properties that relate to photocatalytic applications. This investigation furthers these efforts by the (a) modification of a metal oxide surface to isolate known influences of chemical properties and (b) proposing and utilizing a novel methodology for attribution of photocatalytic activity to a discernable influence. We performed coarse-grained molecular-dynamics (MD) simulations to study the structural and dynamical properties of surfactant micelles in equilibrium and under Poiseuille-like flow in a nano-confined geometry. We used the MARTINI force-field to model the interactions between water molecules, counter-ions, and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) surfactants. SDS surfactant was chosen as the standard model because of its potential application in drug delivery systems. First, we focused on the self-assembly of SDS in equilibrium. TiO2 is a semiconducting material that has been used extensively in many industrial applications, and recently has become a candidate for photocatalytic water splitting, fuel cell anode support materials, sensors, and other novel nanodevices. The interface of TiO2 with water, historically well-studied but still poorly understood, presents a ubiquitous environmental challenge towards the ultimate practical usefulness of these technologies. In this thesis we study relative equilibria of di-atomic and isosceles tri-atomic molecules in classical approximations with repulsive-attractive interaction. For di-atomic systems we retrieve well-known results. The main contribution consists of the study of the existence and stability of relative equilibria in a three-atom system formed by two identical atoms of mass $m$ and a third of mass $m_3$, constrained in an isosceles configuration at all times.

Given the shape of the binary potential only, we discuss the existence of equilibria and relative equilibria. We represent the results in the form of energy-momentum diagrams. We find that fixing the masses …

A lack of sense of belonging and stereotype threat have been shown to contribute to women leaving the sciences (Seymour, 1997; Beasley & Fischer, 2012; Deemer et al., 2013). Contributing to this is the fact that most women find affirmation externally (through friends, family and professors) for their life decisions (Seymour, 1997; Zeldin, 2000).
