Synthesis Of Metal-Containing Polymers And Stable Organic Radical-Containing Polymers And Their Use As Advanced Functional Materials, Joseph A. Paquette

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The work presented in this thesis details the synthesis and characterization of two different families of multifunctional polymers. The first family involved the incorporation of stable 6-oxoverdazyl radicals into polymer scaffolds. This was originally achieved by the polymerization of the radical precursors, phenyl- and isopropyl-6-oxotetrazanes, followed by post-polymerization oxidation to afford the phenyl- and isopropyl-6-oxoverdazyl polymers. A second methodology involved the direct polymerization of isopropyl-6-oxoverdazyl radicals using ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) to afford polymers with controlled molecular weights and narrow molecular weight distributions. The polymers were characterized by the close comparison of the physical and spectroscopic properties …

Synthesis, Structural Diversity, And Redox Control Of Cyclometalated Monoruthenium Complexes, Zhong-Liang Gong, Jiang-Yang Shao, Zhong Yu-Wu Jun 2016

Synthesis, Structural Diversity, And Redox Control Of Cyclometalated Monoruthenium Complexes, Zhong-Liang Gong, Jiang-Yang Shao, Zhong Yu-Wu

Journal of Electrochemistry

Cyclometalated ruthenium complexes have received increasing attractions recently due to their excellent redox and photophysical properties. One structural feature of these complexes is that there is a ruthenium-carbon (Ru-C) σ bond presented in the molecule. Three common methods, namely, the “late metalation”, “early metalation”, and “transmetalation” methods, for the synthesis of cyclometalated ruthenium complexes are discussed and summarized. General strategies for the design of cyclometalating ligand and cyclometalated ruthenium complexes are introduced. By using different ancillary ligands, such as pyridine, imidazole, triazole, and pyrimidine, a great number of ruthenium complexes can be prepared. The presence of the Ru-C bond significantly …

The Corrosion Of Carbon Steel Under Deep Geologic Nuclear Waste Disposal Conditions, Shannon L.W. Hill Jun 2016

The Corrosion Of Carbon Steel Under Deep Geologic Nuclear Waste Disposal Conditions, Shannon L.W. Hill

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The proposed disposal scenario for high-level nuclear waste (spent fuel) in Canada is emplacement within a sealed, deep geological repository (DGR) located in either granitic rock or sedimentary clay. Disposal is based on a multi-barrier approach, with the primary barrier being a sealed container which could be either dual-walled with a copper shell over an inner carbon steel vessel for granitic rock or a single thick-walled steel container for sedimentary clay. This study focuses on the corrosion behaviour of A516 Gr70 carbon steel as well as the corrosion products formed in a variety of groundwater compositions and concentrations expected within …

High Temperature Electrochemical Engineering And Clean Energy Systems, Brenda L. Garcia-Diaz, Luke Olson, Michael Martinez-Rodriguez, Roderick Fuentes, Hector Colon-Mercado, Josh Gray

Journal of the South Carolina Academy of Science

Global power demand is projected to more than double by 2050 and meeting this increased power demand will require maintaining or increasing power output from all existing energy sources while adding a large amount of new capacity. The power sources that have the greatest opportunity to fulfill this demand gap over this time period are clean energy sources including solar and nuclear power. One of the areas of expertise that SRNL has been applying to help with a variety of clean energy technologies is in high temperature electrochemistry. Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL) in collaboration with industrial and university partners …

Adsorption Behavior Of Rhodamine 6g On Silver Surfaces Studied By Electrochemical Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy, Chan-Juan Chen, Cheng Zong, Guo-Kun Liu, Bin Ren Feb 2016

Adsorption Behavior Of Rhodamine 6g On Silver Surfaces Studied By Electrochemical Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy, Chan-Juan Chen, Cheng Zong, Guo-Kun Liu, Bin Ren

Journal of Electrochemistry

Rhodamine 6G (R6G) is one of the most common probe molecules employed in single molecule surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SM-SERS). The study in adsorption behavior of R6G will help understand the interactions between R6G and surface. In this paper, we used electrochemical surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) to study the potential-dependent adsorption behavior of R6G on silver electrodes. Our results show that when the potential moved negatively, the orientation of R6G on silver surface changed from vertical to inclined adsorption. This result indicates that the abnormal SM-SERS spectra of R6G observed in the former SM-SERS studies from other research groups are due …

Fabrication Of Riboflavin Electrochemical Sensor Based On Au Nanoparticles/Polydopamine/Carbon Nanotubes Modified Glassy Carbon Electrode, Hua-Ping Peng, Mei-Ling Yu, Xin Liu, Pan Liu, Wei Chen, Ai-Lin Liu, Xin-Hua Lin Feb 2016

Fabrication Of Riboflavin Electrochemical Sensor Based On Au Nanoparticles/Polydopamine/Carbon Nanotubes Modified Glassy Carbon Electrode, Hua-Ping Peng, Mei-Ling Yu, Xin Liu, Pan Liu, Wei Chen, Ai-Lin Liu, Xin-Hua Lin

Journal of Electrochemistry

A novel electrochemical platform for the high sensitivity detection of riboflavin was constructed by Au nanoparticles/polydopamine/carbon nanotubes (Au-PDA-MWCNTs) nanocomposite modified glassy carbon electrode. The Au-PDA-MWCNTs nanocomposite was synthesized by in situ reduction method. The characteristics of the as-prepared Au-PDA-MWCNTs nanocomposite modified electrodes were investigated by using UV-Vis spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and electrochemical methods. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) were used to study the electrochemical behavior of riboflavin (RF) at Au-PDA-MWCNTs nanocomposite modified electrodes. The results demonstrated that the present electrochemical sensor exhibited a wide linear range from 5×10-9 mol•L-1to 1×10-5 mol•L …
