Measuring The Acceleration Of Falling Objects, John Pickle
Measuring The Acceleration Of Falling Objects, John Pickle
STEM Digital
Earth's gravity pulls all objects toward its center, and near the Earth's surface. Objects in free fall accelerate at 9.8 m/s2 vertically downward, provided air resistance is negligible. This value of acceleration is often referred to as "g". There are many ways to measure this rate of acceleration, and most require a timing device. Typically, stopwatches are the least expensive technology, so these are commonly available in high school science classrooms. With the recent addition of movie cameras on cell phones and digital cameras, another timing tool is available at moderate cost (free if the school policy …

Surveys, in 1993 and 2003, of industrial employers of BS analytical chemists show that respondents consider employees’ abilities to work as a team member, solve problems, write and communicate orally, work safely with a positive ethic, perform calculations, and apply basic chemical principles to be the most important. There is dissatisfaction with the preparation of graduates with regard to communications skills, safety training, and problem-solving abilities. Respondents also indicated that graduates should have had hands-on experience with a variety of chromatographic and spectroscopic techniques as well as some techniques not commonly encountered in the teaching laboratory, such as auto-titration, microwave …

An Experiment Using Time-Based Detection In Flow Injection Analysis, Mary K. Carroll, Julian Tyson
Chemistry Department Faculty Publication Series
We present a laboratory experiment, suitable for implementation in analytical chemistry courses at the undergraduate level, that demonstrates the utility of time-based measurements with doublet peaks in flow injection analysis. The measurements are taken with an instrument that incorporates a simple solid-state detector, which has as its source a light-emitting diode (LED) and as its detecting element a photodiode (PD). The system studied here is a simple acid-base titration. The experiment could be adapted to any number of chemical reactions that result in a product that absorbs light of the LED wavelength significantly.
Putting The Chemistry Back Into Analytical Chemistry, Julian Tyson
Putting The Chemistry Back Into Analytical Chemistry, Julian Tyson

Aspects of the current status of and research in analytical chemistry are briefly discussed and the need for cost effective analytical procedures is emphasized. The present and future of a number of aspects of flow-injection analysis are considered. These include the basic theory, the kinetic features, the control features, time-based methodology, and the coupling of sample pretreatment with instrumentation. Several aspects of this latter topic are considered with particular reference to the flow-injection atomic spectrometry combination. Problems of kinetic mismatch between chemistry, manifold residence, and instrument operation are discussed and some possible solutions proposed including the use of closed loop …
Supercritical Carbon Dioxide As A Carrier For Sample Introduction In Atomic Absorption Spectrometry, S. R. Bysouth, Julian Tyson
Supercritical Carbon Dioxide As A Carrier For Sample Introduction In Atomic Absorption Spectrometry, S. R. Bysouth, Julian Tyson
Chemistry Department Faculty Publication Series
The use of a supercritical carbon dioxide carrier to transport organic solutions of metal complexes to a heated restrictor is demonstrated as a means of aerosol or vapour generation for sample introduction in flame atomic absorption spectrometry. Calibrations obtained using conventional pneumatic nebulisation of continuously aspirated solutions or using flow injection into a water carrier are compared with those obtained using the carbon dioxide carrier. Injection of solutions of copper pyrrolidinedithiocarbamate in 4-methyl pentan-2-one into a carbon dioxide carrier at 1000 p.s.i. was shown to be 1.2 times more sensitive than injection of the same solutions into a water carrier …

Atomic Spectrometric Detectors For Flow-Injection Analysis, Julian Tyson
Atomic Spectrometric Detectors For Flow-Injection Analysis, Julian Tyson
Chemistry Department Faculty Publication Series
The distinction between liquid chromatography and flow injection analysis is discussed in terms of the underlying concepts, the performance characteristics and the hardware involved. For the last aspect, attention is focused on the role of the detector and the development of spectroscopic detectors for these techniques is discussed. The limitations of atomic spectrometric detectors are discussed for the three most widely used techniques, flame atomic absorption spectrometry, plasma spectrometry and electrothermal atomisation atomic absorption spectrometry, and the recent literature concerned with the use of these techniques for chromatographic detectors is summarized. The use of flow-injectin methods to extend the capabilities …

Comparison Of Alternating Variable Search And Simple Methods Of Optimisation For Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission And Atomic Fluorescence Spectrometry, Stanley Greenfield, Mahmood S. Salman, Maryanne Thomsen, Julian Tyson
Chemistry Department Faculty Publication Series
The performance of several cyclic alternating variable search (AVS) optimisation methods are compared with two simplex methods with respect to the number of changes of variable required to search a model two-factor response space. The roles of the initial step size and of the variable step size are discussed, and the information produced concerning the shape of the factor space is evaluated. An AVS method which starts with a fixed step size and then changes to a variable step size on second and subsequent cycles is compared with a variable step size simplex for the optimisation of an inductively coupled …
The Design Of Flow Injection Manifolds To Give The Best Detection Limits For Methods Involving On-Line Chemical Derivatisation Part 1. Theoretical Basis For High Sensitivity, Julian Tyson
Chemistry Department Faculty Publication Series
The criteria to be considered when designing a flow-injection manifold for the highest sensitivity for a method based on measurement of the peak height corresponding to a derivative formed on-line between the injectate and a reagent. These criteria include the ratio of reagent concentration to determinand concentration at the peak maximum, the concentration of the top standard and the reagent composition. These three parameters can be combined to give a single parameter referred to as the a-value being the ratio of the determinand to reagent dispersion coefficients at the peak maximum for the top standard. It is shown, on the …

The Design Of Flow Injection Manifolds To Give The Best Detection Limits For Methods Involving On-Line Chemical Derivatisation Part 2. The Spectrophotometric Determination Of Chloride, Julian Tyson, A. G. Fogg, X. Wang
Chemistry Department Faculty Publication Series
The optimisation of a flow injection manifold for the spectrophotometric determination of chloride is described. Factors contributing to the baseline noise due to refractive index and reagent absorption effects are removed by a combination of design features. Firstly, a double-line manifold is used; secondly, pulse-dampers and a packed bed reactor are incorporated into the flow lines and thirdly a delay coil is introduced to resolve the valve switching peaks from the determinand peaks. The appropriate conditions for obtaining the maximum sensitivity are found from an off-line experiment and the guidelines established on the basis of the well-stirred tank model for …

The effects of phosphate, aluminium, sodium and potassium on the atomic fluorescence of calcium at 422.7 nm and the ionic fluorescence at I:393.4-396.8 nm have been studied. When the operating conditions are optimised for maximum fluorescence signal from a solution containing no interferents, interference effects are observed which may be interpreted in terms of stable compound formation, ionisation suppression and fluorescence quenching. These effects may be removed by optimising the operating parameters for minimum interference.
