A Simple Predictive Model For Estimating Relative E-Cigarette Toxic Carbonyl Levels, Shawna Vreeke, Xijing Zhu, Robert Strongin

E-cigarette devices are wide ranging, leading to significant differences in levels of toxic carbonyls in their respective aerosols. Power can be a useful method in predicting relative toxin concentrations within the same device, but does not correlate well to inter-device levels. Herein, we have developed a simple mathematical model utilizing parameters of an e-cigarette’s coil and wick in order to predict relative levels of e-liquid solvent degradation. Model 1, which is coil length/(wick surface area*wraps), performed in the moderate-to-substantial range as a predictive tool (R2 = 0.69). Pine rosin (colophony) has been identified as a new adulterant in cannabis oil. Its inhalation toxicity poses a significant health concern to users. For example, pine rosin fumes are released during soldering, and have been cited as a causative agent of occupational asthma. Symptoms also include desquamation of bronchial epithelium, which has also been observed in EVALI patients. The sample analyzed herein was acquired from a cannabis industry source, also contains medium chain triglycerides and oleamide, the latter of which is a hypnotic that is commonly found in the synthetic marijuana product Spice, or K2. Red-shifted and near-infrared (NIR)-active rhodamine analogs and their boronic acid derivatives were synthesized and studied. These latter compounds function as fluorogenic NIR active substrates for sugar sensing. The effects of benzannulation and boronic acid functionalization on fluorophore optical and sensing properties are described.

A general analytical description of the equilibrium and reaction kinetics of DNA multiplex hybridization has been developed. In this approach, multiplex hybridization is considered to be a competitive multichannel reaction process: a system wherein many species can react both specifically and nonspecifically with one another. General equations are presented that can consider equilibrium and kinetic models of multiplex hybridization systems comprised, in principle, of any number of targets and probes. Numerical solutions to these systems for both equilibrium and kinetic behaviors are provided. An atmospheric pressure ionization (API) source for a VG 7070E‐HF mass spectrometer has been built and successfully operated at an accelerating potential of 6 kV. Hydrated protons and hydrated organic ions formed in the API source can be either partially or completely disaggregated by collisionally induced dissociation before entering the mass analyzer. The mass flow and chemical kinetic equations for a gaseous chemiluminescence (CL) analyzer are formulated and solved. The resultant equation can be used to predict the absolute response of the analyzer as a function of the sample flow rate, the sample gas pressure, the chamber pressure, the chamber volume, the mass flow rate and mole fraction of the reagent gas, and the rate constants of the relevant chemical processes. Thus, the equation allows optimization of these parameters.
