Extraterrestrial habitation has long been the object of science fiction, and experts in the fields of science and engineering have proposed many designs for a lunar base. The research conducted has focused on either structural stability, radiation protection, or meteorite-impact vulnerabilities, but rarely have these been considered together. The Resilient ExtraTerrestrial Habitats (RETH) project aims to design a lunar habitat from a hazards perspective, considering general degradation, meteorite impacts, seismic activity, radiation exposure, thermal extremes, and geomagnetic storms in addition to the physiological, psychological, and sociological aspects of astronauts living in such a habitat. Supernovae are amongst the most energetic events in the Universe. Understanding the different stages of the life of a supernova is currently one of the main objectives in astrophysics. During a supernova explosion, material with mass several times that of the Sun is ejected with a speed about 1/10 that of light. In current models, the transition from the Sedov-Taylor to the radiative phase is assumed to be almost instantaneous, which is not entirely accurate. Here the physics of the transition to the radiative phase will be revisited. Observations indicate that the supernova ejecta remains bright in the radio band …

Characterizing New Calibration Sources In Liquid Xenon Dark Matter Searches, Evan P. Bray, Rafael Lang, Sean Macmullin
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
In order to use the XENON1T liquid xenon detector as a means for detecting dark matter, the response to nuclear and electronic recoils must be well calibrated. Electronic-recoil calibration of XENON1T will be done by using the noble gas radon-220 that emanates from a custom thorium-228 source to observe the electron recoils that its daughter elements induce in liquid xenon. A silicon PIN diode was constructed to ensure that the Th228 source does not contaminate the system with the long-lived isotopes Th228 (T1/2 of 1.9 y) or Radium-224 (T1/2 of 3.6 d). Active galactic nuclei (AGN) are the areas around the centers of galaxies with high luminosity in much of the electromagnetic spectrum. The existing model of AGN describes the high luminosity as the result of accretion of matter around a black hole at the galaxy’s center. Many AGN generate superluminal jets of density higher than the surrounding interstellar medium. The cause for and mechanics driving the relativistic jets are not well understood. In addition, the jets often change direction decaparsecs away from their associated cores, the cause of which has not been well explained. In order to better understand the mechanics …
