Methanol Masers In Star-Forming Regions, Nicolas Clarisse, Anuj P. Sarma

DePaul Discoveries

Methanol molecules in star-forming regions emit detectable microwave radiation. In particular, the rotational energy state transitions of methanol are responsible for two types of masers: Class I and Class II, found in the bipolar outflows and accretion disks of star-forming regions, respectively. Masers, being intense point-like sources in our sky, serve as an excellent source of information in further understanding the environment of high-mass star-forming regions due to their intense luminosities. High-mass star formation is still not entirely understood and remains an observational challenge. We have compiled a list of all the methanol maser transitions observed in the literature, in …

We report the detection of the auroral radio emission from the early-type magnetic star HD 142301. New VLA observations of HD 142301 detected highly polarized amplified emission occurring at fixed stellar orientations. The coherent emission mechanism responsible for the stellar auroral radio emission amplifies the radiation within a narrow beam, making the star where this phenomenon occurs similar to a radio lighthouse. The elementary emission process responsible for the auroral radiation mainly amplifies one of the two magneto-ionic modes of the electromagnetic wave. This explains why the auroral pulses are highly circularly polarized. The auroral radio emission of HD 142301 …

In order to better analyse the polarization of the cosmic microwave background (CMB), which is dominated by emission from our Galaxy, we need tools that can detect residual foregrounds in cleaned CMB maps. Galactic foregrounds introduce statistical anisotropy and directionality to the polarization pseudo-vectors of the CMB, which can be investigated by using the D statistic of Bunn and Scott. This statistic is rapidly computable and capable of investigating a broad range of data products for directionality. We demonstrate the application of this statistic to detecting foregrounds in polarization maps by analysing the uncleaned Planck 2018 frequency maps. For the …
