Theses and Dissertations
The development of theoretical computational methods and their application has become widespread in the world today. In this dissertation, I present my work in the creation of models to detect and describe complex biological and health related problems. The first major part of my work centers around the creation and enhancement of methods to calculate protein structure and dynamics. To this end, substantial enhancement has been made to the software package REDCRAFT to better facilitate its usage in protein structure calculation. The enhancements have led to an overall increase in its ability to characterize proteins under difficult conditions such as …

Bench Tracker: Improving Actionable Insights In Smartwatch Fitness Application By Increasing Usability Through Simplification, Chris Campanelli
Faculty of Applied Science and Technology - Exceptional Student Work, Applied Computing Theses
This thesis describes a smartwatch solution, called Bench Tracker for fitness monitoring using Apple Watches and Apple iPhone devices. The system involves a mobile based application that allows users to track and monitor bench press workouts in real-time to create actionable insights. By creating actionable insights on a smartwatch application, and improving the application’s usability through simplification, users agreed they would use the fitness application created that specifically tracked bench presses. A leading fitness app was used as the comparator, and it was discovered that users were undecided if they would use this app for bench press tracking. This paper …

Selecting an item of interest on smartwatches can be tedious and time-consuming as it involves a series of swipe and tap actions. We present PageFlip, a novel method that combines into a single action multiple touch operations such as command invocation and value selection for efficient interaction on smartwatches. PageFlip operates with a page flip gesture that starts by dragging the UI from a corner of the device. We first design PageFlip by examining its key design factors such as corners, drag directions and drag distances. We next compare PageFlip to a functionally equivalent radial menu and a standard swipe …
