Revegetation Guide To The Central Wheatbelt, E C. Lefroy, R J. Hobbs, L J. Atkins, Department Of Agriculture And Food, Western Australia, Csiro, Division Of Wildlife And Ecology
Bulletins 4000 -
The rapid development of the central wheatbelt for agriculture over the past century has produced a productive farming landscape, but one which is increasingly subject to degradation. Erosion, salinization, declining soil structure, waterlogging and acidification are all symptoms of this degradation and causes of lost agricultural production. In addition, most of the native vegetation and many of the native animals have disappeared, and the natural heritage of the area resides in small scattered patches that together make up only seven per cent of the wheatbelt region.
Many farmers now recognize that replanting trees and shrubs is an effective means of …
Selecting And Developing Reliable Bore Sites In The Eastern Wheatbelt, Richard George
Selecting And Developing Reliable Bore Sites In The Eastern Wheatbelt, Richard George
Bulletins 4000 -
In the Western Australian wheatbelt, groundwater supplies contribute about 40 per cent of the on-farm livestock requirements and occasionally domestic water supply systems. The first part of this Bulletin comments on sites suitable for both high yielding bores and also those which yield water suitable for livestock. The second part outlines techniques for constructing and developing a bore. Throughout this Bulletin livestock quality water, for adult sheep, is defined as groundwater of less than 12,000 mg/L (or 850 grains per gallon) which has not been subject to localized pollution. For other livestock, the maximum salinities range from 2,600 mg/L for …

Disparities In Development: A Case Study Of Karnataka State (India)., Jayalaxmi Jayaram Dr.
Doctoral Theses
The Five Year Plans have recognised the need to bridge the developmental disparities across the regions and have formulated strategies for accelerated development of backward are as. However, the widening disparities between a few highly developed centres and vast areas of under development only bring out the inadequacies of the plans which are yet to integrate the resources of a region to its people. This study is an attempt to understand the spatial processes and patterns of development which offer an explanation to the intra/inter-regional contrasts in development. The study while high-lighting the importance of the Spatial approach has, in …

Spacing Water Points In The Southern Pastoral Areas Of Western Australia, Don Burnside, Adrian Williams, Peter Curry
Spacing Water Points In The Southern Pastoral Areas Of Western Australia, Don Burnside, Adrian Williams, Peter Curry
Bulletins 4000 -
An inadequate distribution of watering points in our pastoral lands, particularly in the saltbush/bluebush pasture, has caused localisized land degradation close to waters and reduced animal productivity (particularly in stressful times). From experimentation and observation, some generalised recommendations for water supply distribution in pastoral areas can be made.

Soils Of The Ivanhoe Plain, East Kimberley, Western Australia, J M. Aldrick, M H R Van Cuylenburg, P W. Moody, B A. Wren, A J. Clarke
Technical Bulletins
The Ivanhoe Plain was divided into two geomorphic provinces. The principal difference between the provinces is the time during which pedogenesis occurred. The crcking clay soils of the northern province are generally more highly leached than their younger counterparts in the southern province. Sixteen land units are identified as distinct from soil units. These units give cognizance to vegetation and topographical features as well as soils.

Forage Shrubs And Grasses For Revegetating Saltland, H V. Runciman, C V. Malcolm
Forage Shrubs And Grasses For Revegetating Saltland, H V. Runciman, C V. Malcolm
Bulletins 4000 -
Salt tolerant shrubs and grasses are used for forage production from salt-affected farmland. This Bulletin is designed to assist in recognition of the important species in Western Australia and to provide information on their use. The species listed have more forage value than some natural indicators and colonizers of saltland, such as Mediterranean barley grass (Hordeum geniculatum), ice plant (Mesembryanthemum spp.), mallee lovegrass (Eragrostisdielsii), salt spurry (Spergularia spp.), curly ryegrass (Parapholis incurva) and beard grass (Polypogon monspeliensis). Some of the plants are also useful for rehabilitating degraded rangeland and mine …

Trees For Windbreaks On Swan Coastal Plain Farms, Leon English, Ken Angell, Metropolitan District Office, Department Of Agriculture And Food, Western Australia
Bulletins 4000 -
Strong easterly and south-westerly winds are a feature of the Swan Coastal Plain and we receive frequent inquiries about which tree species are suitable for planting as windbreaks. When selecting trees for windbreaks you must match the species to the various soil types which occur along the Coastal Plain. The mature height of the tree is also an important consideration in good windbreak design. This Bulletin lists species which are suitable for windbreaks in descending order of mature height and indicates the soil type(s) on which they should be planted.

Agenda: Natural Resource Development In Indian Country, University Of Colorado Boulder. Natural Resources Law Center
Natural Resource Development in Indian Country (Summer Conference, June 8-10)
Conference organizers and/or faculty included University of Colorado School of Law professors David H. Getches, Charles F. Wilkinson, Lawrence J. MacDonnell and Richard B. Collins.
Indian reservations constitute about 2.5% of all land in the country and 5% of all land in the American West. During the last two decades, Indian natural resources issues have moved to the forefront as tribal governments have dramatically expanded their regulatory programs, judicial systems. and resource development activities. This major symposium will address current developments and assess likely future directions in the areas of tribal, federal, and state regulation; tribal-state intergovernmental agreements; financing; mineral …

An Inventory And Condition Survey Of Rangelands In The Carnarvon Basin, Western Australia, A L. Payne, G F. Spencer, P J. Curry
Technical Bulletins
The inventory and condition survey of rangelands in the Carnarvon Basin, undertaken by the Department of Agriculture and Food, Western Australia (DAFWA) between 1980 and 1982, describes and maps the natural resources of the region’s pastoral leasehold land. This survey report provides a baseline record of the existence and condition of the natural area’s resources, to assist with the planning and implementation of land management practices. The report identified and described the condition of soils, landforms, vegetation, habitat, ecosystems, and declared plants and animals. It also assessed the impact of pastoralism and made land management recommendations. The area surveyed covers …

Resource management technical reports
The purpose of this study was to find a suitable location for a bird observatory and provide adequate coastal land resource data for the area. The main selection criteria and conditions were: the location was closely adjacent to major wader roosting and feeding sites; all-seasons access was required; the location provided a site of around 2 1/2 hectares to provide space for one or more buildings, camp ground and associated facilities ; anticipated access tracks, site developments and levels of use.
The Taarblin Experience : A Planned Approach To Soil Conservation, Greg Astbury, Owner/Manager Of Taarblin, Tim Negus
The Taarblin Experience : A Planned Approach To Soil Conservation, Greg Astbury, Owner/Manager Of Taarblin, Tim Negus
Bulletins 4000 -
Many farms in Western Australia were cleared and developed before there was a full and clear understanding of the effects of bush clearing - that is salinization of soil and water supplies, wind and water erosion, waterlogging and soil structure decline. The productive capacity and inherent problems of the different soil types was also largely unknown.
Modern-day Conservation Farm Planning aims to provide a blue-print for the redevelopment of properties to ensure long term soil fertility, to prevent soil erosion and degradation by waterlogging and salinity. It also provides for a spread of reliable stock watering points and more efficient …
