Enhanced Analysis Of Lignin Dehydrogenation Oligomers Via Mass Spectrometry, Amber Suzanne Bowman Jan 2018

Enhanced Analysis Of Lignin Dehydrogenation Oligomers Via Mass Spectrometry, Amber Suzanne Bowman

Theses and Dissertations--Chemistry

Effective analytical techniques need to be developed to characterize the products of lignin degradation experiments to be able to generate renewable products from lignin. Mass spectrometry is an valuable analytical approach for lignin characterizaion, but it is hindered by lignin’s poor ionization efficiency, especially in the positive ion mode. In this work, we attempt to improve lignin’s ionization by utilizing electrospray and laser desorption mass spectrometry coupled with the addition of cations and chemical derivatives. We confronted the ionization problem from both a top-down and bottom-up analytical approach by analyzing synthesized monomers, dimers, and polymers along with natural lignin extracts …

Multispectral Observations And Analysis Of The Rosette Nebula, Jeremy Huber Jan 2017

Multispectral Observations And Analysis Of The Rosette Nebula, Jeremy Huber

Theses and Dissertations--Physics and Astronomy

The Rosette nebula is a large, ring-shaped emission nebula with a distinctive central cavity excavated by its central cluster of OB stars. Toward understanding the three dimensional structure and fundamental physical processes of this object, we have acquired flux-calibrated, 4-degree field, deep exposures of the Rosette region through 3 nm bandwidth H-alpha (656.3 nm) as well as H-beta (486.1nm), [OIII] (500.7 nm) and [SII] (671.6 nm) filters with 4.5 nm bandwidth. The 4 arcsec/pixel images are supplemented with 4 degree field slit spectra and combined with archival data from the Galactic Evolution Explorer satellite (GALEX), Akari, the Infrared Astronomical Satellite …

The depletion of condensable elements onto grains in gaseous nebulae can provide evidence that dust is well mixed with the ionized gas. Al and CA are two of the most depleted elements in the general interstellar medium, and it is therefore important to measure their abundances within the ionized region of nebulae. We compute a large grid of photoionization models and identify sets of line ratios which are relatively insensitive to stellar and nebular parameters, and are thus excellent diagnostics for determining relative abundances. Based on the absence of the [Ca II] λλ7291, 7324 doublet and the detection of …

Nebular Properties And The Ionizing Radiation Field In The Galactic Center, Joseph C. Shields, Gary J. Ferland Apr 1994

Nebular Properties And The Ionizing Radiation Field In The Galactic Center, Joseph C. Shields, Gary J. Ferland

Nebulosity in the central parsec of the Milky Way exhibits a low-ionization spectrum that has led previous analyses of this region to conclude that this material is photoionized by a relatively soft continuum. We have reanalyzed the infrared emission-line spectrum of te Galactic center in order to consider whether the data could actually be explained with photoionization by a relatively hard, yet dilute continuum, and additionally to constrain the properties of the reaiating plasma. We conclude that the composite infrared spectrum does not place strong restrictions on the nature of the ionizing continuum and that much of the ionized gas …
