The Cl-−C6H5CH3·Ar, Cl-−C6H5NH2·Ar, and Cl-−C6H5OH·Ar anion complexes are investigated using infrared photodissociation spectroscopy and ab initio calculations at the MP2/aug-cc-pVDZ level. The results indicate that for Cl-−C6H5NH2 and Cl-−C6H5OH, the Cl- anion is attached to the substituent group by a single near-linear hydrogen bond. Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
The modeling of variation through interactions is appealing in crossed array design as it leads to greater robustness to certain type of model misspecification. As an alternative to signal-to-noise analysis, a new, systematic method based on Taguchi type crossed array design is given. It is shown in this article that when fractional factorial design is used for the outer array, the crossed array design is not robust to the presence of noise-noise interactions and a method of rectifying the problem is suggested.

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
A flexible approach to testing the hypothesis of no regression interaction is to test the hypothesis that a generalized additive model provides a good fit to the data, where the components are some type of robust smoother. A practical concern, however, is that there are no published results on how well this approach controls the probability of a Type I error. Simulation results, reported here, indicate that an appropriate choice for the span of the smoother is required so that the actual probability of a Type I error is reasonably close to the nominal level. The chance to view wildlife draws millions of visitors each year to the national parks of North America. The combination of a large number of people and abundant wildlife leads to a variety of wildlife-human interactions. In this paper we explore the nature of those wildlife-human interactions, theoretical frameworks social scientists are using to understand those interactions, and approaches used by national parks across North America to manage those interactions.

Testing for interactions in multivariate experiments is an important function. Studies indicate that much data from social studies research is not normally distributed, thus violating that assumption of the AN OVA procedure. The aligned rank transformation test (ART), aligning using the means of columns and rows, has been found, in limited situations, to be robust to Type I error rates and to have greater power than the ANOVA. This study explored a variety of alignments, including the median, Winsorized trimmed means (10%) and (20%), the Huber1.28 M-estimator, and the Harrell-Davis estimator of the median. Black bear can inflict severe negative Impacts on timber stands in the northwestern United States. A supplemental feeding program to provide bears an alternative food source during spring is practiced in the state of Washington, and to a lesser extent in other states. We initiated concurrent studies to assess characteristics of bear that forage at feeding stations, the interactions of bears around feeders, and impacts of the program on bear territories. Numerous bears fed at stations, including females with and without cubs, yearlings, and males. Bear feeding bouts at stations were generally short, less than 15 minutes. Bears generally fed …

Galaxy morphologies in clusters have undergone a remarkable transition over the past several billion yr. Distant clusters at z ~ 0.4 are filled with small spiral galaxies, many of which are disturbed and show evidence of multiple bursts of star formation. This population is absent from nearby clusters, where spheroidals comprise the faint end of the luminosity function. Our numerical simulations follow the evolution of disk galaxies in a rich cluster resulting from encounters with brighter galaxies and the cluster's tidal field, or "galaxy harassment." After a bursting transient phase, they undergo a complete morphological transformation from "disks" to "spheroidals." …

The Formation Of Quasars In Low-Luminosity Hosts Via Galaxy Harassment, G Lake, N Katz, B Moore

We have simulated disk galaxies undergoing continual bombardment by other galaxies in a rich cluster. "Galaxy harassment" leads to dramatic evolution of smaller disk galaxies and provides an extremely effective mechanism for fueling a central quasar. Within a few billion years after a small disk galaxy enters the cluster environment, up to 90% of its gas can be driven into the inner 500 pc. Up to half of the mass can be transferred in a burst lasting just 100-200 Myr. This transport of gas to the center of galaxy is far more efficient than any mechanism proposed before. Extended Molecular Gas Distribution In Mrk 273 And Merger-Luminosity Evolution, Min S. Yun, N Z. Scoville

We present the first interferometric measurement of CO emission (θ ~ 2'') from the ultraluminous infrared galaxy Mrk 273. A total H2 mass of 3.6 × 1010 Msun is inferred from the CO observations, half of which belongs to an extended component with deconvolved size 5.1 × 2.5 kpc. In addition, an unresolved molecular gas complex is found to be coincident with the optical nucleus. The inferred H2 mass, size (R ~ 380 pc), and mean surface mass density (ΣH2 ≥ 4 × 104 Msun pc-3) of this complex, as well as the IR luminosity, are very similar to those …

Asymmetries in physisorbed systems give rise to interesting phases and phase transitions in two-dimensional (2D) monolayer and multilayer systems. The effects of asymmetric adsorbate and substrate interactions in monolayers of dipolar molecules on ionic substrates and N2 on graphite are studied.
In the case of dipolar molecules on ionic substrates, 2D dielectric phase transitions using a modified Blume-Emery-Griffiths (BEG) model are determined theoretically. A dipole adsorbed vertically above a metal ion lattice site, and pointing up (down), is assigned a spin S=+1 (S=-1). An empty lattice site is assigned a spin S=0. Four studies were considered to simulate the ion behavior in the auroral region and the polar wind.
In study I, a Monte Carlo simulation was used to investigate the behavior of O+ ions that are E x B-drifting through a background of neutral O, with the effect of O+(Coulomb) self-collisions included. Numerical solution of two-dimensional incompressible hydrodynamics shows that states of a near-minimal ratio of enstrophy to energy can be attained in times short compared with the flow decay time, confirming the simplest turbulent selective decay conjecture, and suggesting that coherent vortex structures do not terminate nonlinear processes. After all possible vortex mergers occur, the vorticity attains a particlelike character, suggested by the late-time similarity of the streamlines to Ewald potential contours.

The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the advantage of using weather elements as covariates in studying yield differentials between varieties of wheat over different climatological regions. Using regression methods, the dependence of varietal yield differences on weather elements was demonstrated with a relatively small sample consisting of yield and weather data over a 3-year period from nine locations in Kansas. For each location, the sample-derived regression equation was used to calculate predicted yield differentials and 95% confidence intervals for the mean (CLM) for each year from 1950 through 1989. Field records supplied by the American Simmental Association from 2-yr-old dams were used to study maternal grandsire • region of the U.S. and maternal grandsire • herd within region (herd/region) interactions. Field data collection to support analysis of TM data was accomplished from June 22 to August 28th. Color infrared aerial photography acquired by a U2 on June 12, 1985 was used to locate and identify several vegetation communities. Forty sites where the USFS has collected long term ground cover were located in the field, delineated on aerial photos and ground photos of current conditions taken.

The energization of heavy ionospheric ions by electrostatic hydrogen cyclotron (EHC) waves is examined. In particular, the problem of preferential perpendicular acceleration of heavy ions above 5000 km along auroral field lines is examined critically. Observations have indicated that above this altitude the occurrences of ion beams and EHC waves are highly correlated and that the occurrence rates are high. The EHC waves are found to be coherent. The energization process is examined in the light of interactions of a single coherent wave with the ions.
