The Use Of Tilt Angle In Gravity And Magnetic Methods, Uğur Akin, Betül Işikdeni̇z Şeri̇foğlu, Mehmet Duru

Tilt angle method, which has been recently used in investigating the boundaries of structures, reveals useful information on deep and shallow structures. Tilt angle is expressed as the arctan value of the ratio of the vertical derivative of the potential field to its horizontal derivative. The method was applied to Kýrþehir-Ý31 Sheet. As a result, the presence of volcanites buried under terrestrial sediments was demonstrated.

Astronomical images taken from a telescope must go through “astronomical image processing” to remove instrumental signatures. The Dark Energy Survey (DES), which will start operations in 2012, will use a 570 megapixel Dark Energy Camera (DECam) to study the mystery of the acceleration of the expanding universe. The DECam will use DES filters and 74 of a new type of astronomical Charge Coupled Device (CCD) that is particularly efficient in detecting near-infrared light. Together, the DES filters and DECam CCDs are optimized for the measurement of redshifts of distant galaxies. In preparation for the DES, data were collected from the …

Over the past several decades, contrasting models have been proposed for the physical and chemical processes responsible for the uplift and long-term stability of the Colorado Plateau (CP) and crustal thinning beneath the Basin and Range Province (BRP) in the southwestern United States. Here we provide new constraints on the models by modeling gravity anomalies and by systematically analyzing over 15,500 P-to-S receiver functions recorded at 72 USArray and other broadband seismic stations on the southwestern CP and the southern BRP. Through Spherical Harmonics, one can describe complex gravitational fields. However as the order and degree of the spherical harmonics increases, the computation speed rises exponentially. In addition, for onboard applications of spherical harmonics, the processors are radiation hardened in order to mitigate negative effects of the space environment on electronics. But, those processors have outdated processing speeds, resulting in a slower onboard spherical harmonic program.

The Border Ranges Fault System (BRFS) bounds the Cook Inlet and Susitna Basins, an important petroleum province within south-central Alaska. A primary goal in the research is to test several plausible models of structure along the Border Ranges Fault System using a novel three-dimensional inversion utilizing gravity and magnetic data, constrained with other geophysical, borehole and surface geological information. This research involves the development of inversion modeling software using a Borland C++ compiler as part of the Rapid Application Development (RAD) Studio. Albert Einstein predicted the existence of `Einstein rings' as a consequence of his general theory of relativity. The phenomenon is a direct result of the idea that if a mass warps space-time then light (and other electromagnetic waves) will be `lensed' by the strong gravitational field produced by a large cosmological body such as a galaxy. The El Paso-Ciudad Juarez Region is situated at the southern end of the active Rio Grande Rift within the Mesilla and Hueco basins. The Hueco basin is separated from the eastern Franklin Mountains by a prominent fault, the Eastern Boundary Fault. Studies of this fault have revealed fault scarps that displace Quaternary deposits (Keaton et al., 1995; Raney and Collins, 1990; Lovejoy, 1976). This fault is cataloged as an active fault in the National Seismic Hazard Map with an estimated slip rate of 0.1 mm/yr. Lithospheric Control On The Spatial Pattern Of Azores Hotspot Seafloor Anomalies: Constraints From A Model Of Plume-Triple Junction Interaction, Jennifer E. Georgen

The Azores hotspot is located near a plate boundary triple junction (TJ) consisting of the Terceira Rift (TER) and two branches of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR). The seafloor expression of the Azores hotspot has a complex spatial pattern. Latitudinal anomalies in seafloor depth and other data along the MAR extend farther to the south of the inferred location of the mantle heterogeneity than to the north. Longitudinal anomalies span a greater distance to the east of the MAR (along the TER) than to the west. A finite element model is used to investigate how the divergence of three plates away …
