Reconstruction Of 3d Image For Particles By The Method Of Angular Correlations From Xfel Data, Sung Soon Kim

Theses and Dissertations

The world’s first X-ray Free Electron Laser (XFEL), the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC), is now generating X-ray pulses of unprecedented brilliance (one billion times brighter than the most powerful existing sources), and at the amazing rate of only a few femtoseconds. The first such experiments are being performed on relatively large objects such as viruses, which produce low resolution, low-noise diffraction patterns on the basis of the so called “diffraction before destruction” principle. Despite the promise of using XFEL for the determination of the structures of viruses, the results so far from …

We have studied mutual projectile and target ionization in 1-MeV/amu N4+ and N5++He collisions in kinematically complete experiments by measuring the momenta of the recoil ion and both ejected electrons in coincidence with the charge-changed projectiles. By means of four-particle Dalitz plots, in which multiple differential cross sections are presented as a function of the momenta of all four particles, experimental spectra are compared with theoretical results from various models. The experimental data are qualitatively reproduced by higher-order calculations, where good agreement is achieved for N5++He collisions, while some discrepancies persist for N4++He …

Robust Control Techniques Enabling Duty Cycle Experiments Utilizing A 6-Dof Crewstation Motion Base, A Full Scale Combat Hybrid Electric Power System, And Long Distance Internet Communications, Marc Compere, Jarrett Goodell, Miguel Simon, Wilford Smith, Mark Brudnak

The RemoteLink effort supports the U.S. Army's objective for developing and fielding next generation hybrid-electric combat vehicles. It is a distributed soldierin- the-Ioop and hardware-in-the-Ioop environment with a 6-DOF motion base for operator realism, a full-scale combat hybrid electric power system, and an operational context provided by OneSAF. The driver/gunner crewstations rest on one of two 6-DOF motion bases at the U.S. Army TARDEC Simulation Laboratory (TSL). The hybrid power system is located 2,450 miles away at the TARDEC Power and Energy System Integration Laboratory (P&E SIL). The primary technical challenge in the RemoteLink is to operate both laboratories together …

In this paper, a distributed driver-in-the-Ioop and hardware-in-the-Ioop simulator is described with a driver on a motion simulator at the U.S. Army TARDEC Ground Vehicle Simulation Laboratory (GVSL). Realistic power system response is achieved by linking the driver in the GVSL with a full-sized hybrid electric power system located 2,450 miles away at the TARDEC Power and Energy Systems Integration Laboratory (P&E SIL), which is developed and maintained by Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC). The goal is to close the loop between the GVSL and P&E SIL over the Internet to provide a realistic driving experience in addition to realistic …

Measurement Of The Wear Properties Of Metallic Solids With A Falex Lubricant Testing Machine, Edward Boyd Hale, Chun-Ping John Meng, Ronald A. Kohser Jan 1982

Measurement Of The Wear Properties Of Metallic Solids With A Falex Lubricant Testing Machine, Edward Boyd Hale, Chun-Ping John Meng, Ronald A. Kohser

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

A modified Falex Lubricant Testing Machine has been used to determine wear properties of metallic solids. In particular, wear mass loss, wear volume loss, wear rates, and other parameters have been determined for a basic steel, as heat treated and after ion implantation. Wear rate improvements of more than an order of magnitude were found in a nickel-chrome steel (SAE 3135) implanted with 2.5x1017 N+2/cm2. Wear tests were conducted with a cylinder-in-groove geometry in a mild lubricating oil with loads greater than 540 N, which corresponded to pressures which exceeded 108N/m2 …
