Databases And Deliberation, Britany Orozco, Quentin Jensen
Databases And Deliberation, Britany Orozco, Quentin Jensen
WWU Honors College Senior Projects
This paper describes the process taken to build a digital form-collection system in a business context. By starting with the motivation for the project, we can gather the requirements necessary to complete before we can consider the project complete. From there, we start discussing the client-server-database architecture principles that must be reviewed before we can design our database. Database design fundamentals are reviewed, such as what a schema or entity relationship diagram is, and those fundamentals are used to design the database. Next, we show how a development environment is chosen. With the environment set up, we then discuss how …

Cleaning Data Helps Clean The Air, Kelley Donalds, Xiangrong Liu
Management Faculty Publications
In this project, students use a real-world, complex database and experience firsthand the consequences of inadequate data modeling. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency created the database as part of a multimillion dollar data collection effort undertaken in order to set limits on air pollutants from electric power plants. First, students explore the database to identify design limitations from the perspective of a data analyst with a specific goal. Second, students create a new database design which overcomes identified problems. Through this case study, students develop the skill to infer usage implications by studying the design of an existing database. This …

Selection and recruitment is a key HR function and it is often necessary to maintain at least a small database of all the candidates who have been invited in past interviews. This information may be considered as a part of HR MIS and may be maintained by HR department along with other HR MIS such as employee information, transfers, performance appraisals, trainings etc.
This recruitment MIS database includes all the candidates after the preliminary scrutiny is over. When the candidates go through different stages of interviews, the MIS also captures all their interview results. Maintaining this information not only helps …
Oracle Cost Based Optimizer Correlations, Robert Apple
Oracle Cost Based Optimizer Correlations, Robert Apple
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
Database systems use optimizers on queries to select execution pathways that are supposed to provide optimal performance. The Oracle database version of this technology is called the Cost Based Optimizer (CBO). Researchers have studied whether Oracle optimizer estimates could be correlated to execution speeds with a high degree of confidence, but have found that correlating optimizer cost estimates with actual execution speed to be problematic and unreliable. If possible, however, such correlations would be helpful to developers who are tasked with query creation and optimization. Although much has been written on databases, the academic literature on optimizers was sparse. To …

As worldwide e-commerce expands, businesses continue to look for better ways to meet their evolving needs with web solutions that scale and perform adequately. Several online retailers have been able to address scaling challenges through the implementation of NoSQL databases. While architecturally different from their relational database counterparts, NoSQL databases typically achieve performance gains by relaxing one or more of the essential transaction processing attributes of atomicity, consistency, isolation, and durability (ACID). As with any emerging technology, there are both critics and supporters of NoSQL databases. The detractors claim that NoSQL is not safe and is at a greater risk …

Development Of An Api As A Solution To Data Insularity Amongst Dietary-Need Applications, Raphael Lapuma
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
When multiple competing applications in the same field use only their own sets of user-generated review data and do not collaborate with other applications, data is used in isolation. This factor, which the author will refer to as "data insularity," segregates each application's community of users from other applications' communities, thus creating a limited and fragmented set of data, which discourages the creation of new applications in the industry, and adversely affects the end user. This study will propose a prototype API for applications in the restaurant industry as a solution to the limited and insular use of data amongst …

Merging Schemas In A Collaborative Faceted Classification System, Jianxiang Li
Merging Schemas In A Collaborative Faceted Classification System, Jianxiang Li
Computer Science Theses & Dissertations
We have developed a system that improves access to a large, growing image collection by allowing users to collaboratively build a global faceted (multi-perspective) classification schema. We are extending our system to support both global and local schemas, where global schema provides a complete and uniform view of the collection whereas local schema provides a personal, possibly incomplete and idiosyncratic view of the collection. We argue that although users usually focus on their personal schemas, it is still desirable to have a global schema for the entire collection even if such local schemas are available. In order to keep the …

Animated Courseware Support For Teaching Database Design, Meg C. Murray, Mario Guimaraes
Faculty and Research Publications
Database technologies are a core component of computing technology curricula. Their importance will only continue to expand as more and more data are retained in database systems. An effective database system is predicated on a good data model. Database design is the conceptualization of an underlying data model that progresses from identifying user requirements to graphically depicting those requirements and finally mapping the graphical models to a set of tables implemented in a physical database system. The abstract nature of much of database design makes it challenging to teach. This paper presents a set of software animations designed to support …

The World Wide Web (WWW) is arguably the preferred method for disseminating information across the Internet. Most of the work to support the advancement of WWW technology has focused on servers used in storing and retrieving information, browsers for viewing this information, and editors or filters for creating the information.
One area which has received little attention is that of actually managing this information at the local host. This thesis describes the development of a means for organizing local data prior to its publishing on the WWW, a method for gathering local pages together and preparing them for distribution, and …
Quality Of Service Specification For Multimedia Presentations, Richard Staehli, Jonathan Walpole, David Maier
Quality Of Service Specification For Multimedia Presentations, Richard Staehli, Jonathan Walpole, David Maier
Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
The bandwidth limitations of multimedia systems force tradeoffs between presentation data fidelity and real-time performance. For example, digital video is commonly encoded with lossy compression to reduce bandwidth and frames may be skipped during playback to maintain synchronization. These tradeoffs depend on device performance and physical data representations that are hidden by a database system. If a multimedia database is to support digital video and other continuous media data types, we argue that the database should provide a Quality of Service (QOS) interface to allow application control of presentation timing and information loss tradeoffs.
This paper proposes a data model …
