A polarimeter was constructed to measure the longitudinal polarization of a spin-polarized electron beam at 5 and 7 MeV. The polarimeter takes advantage of Compton scattering between circularly polarized bremsstrahlung photons produced by a longitudinally polarized electron beam striking a copper radiator and the spin-polarized electrons orbiting the iron atoms of an analyzing magnet. This so-called Compton transmission polarimeter is compact and relatively inexpensive compared to Mott-scattering polarimeters because no spin manipulator is required. This work presents the design of the radiator, analyzing magnet, photon detector assembly, and data acquisition system of the Compton transmission polarimeter as well as beam …

Research On Coal-Rock Interface Recognition System Based On Drilling Parameters, Wang Jie
Coal Geology & Exploration
In response to the problems of untimely and inaccurate coal-rock interface recognition and lack of appropriate technical means during the construction of cross-seam drilling for gas drainage by bottom drainage roadway, a coal-rock interface recognition system based on drilling parameters (rotational speed, rotary torque, propulsion force, advance velocity, crushing work ratio) was developed. The entire system consists of a data sensing layer, a data acquisition layer and a data analysis layer. Among them, the data sensing layer and the data acquisition layer are also collectively called the drilling data acquisition system, which can collect the drilling parameters in real time. …

Intersection markings play a vital role in providing road users with guidance and information. The conditions of intersection markings will be gradually degrading due to vehicular traffic, rain, and/or snowplowing. Degraded markings can confuse drivers, leading to increased risk of traffic crashes. Timely obtaining high-quality information of intersection markings lays a foundation for making informed decisions in safety management and maintenance prioritization. However, current labor-intensive and high-cost data collection practices make it very challenging to gather intersection data on a large scale. This paper develops an automated system to intelligently detect intersection markings and to assess their degradation conditions with …

Zero Trust Architecture: Framework And Case Study, Cody Shepherd
Cyber Operations and Resilience Program Graduate Projects
The world and business are connected and a business does not exist today that does not have potentially thousands of connections to the Internet in addition to the thousands of connections to other various parts of its own infrastructure. That is the nature of the digital world we live in and there is no chance the number of those interconnections will reduce in the future. Protecting from the “outside” world with a perimeter solution might have been enough to reduce risk to an acceptable level in an organization 20 years ago, but today’s threats are sophisticated, persistent, abundant, and can …

Developing A Data Acquisition System For Use In Cold Neutral Atom Traps, Jonathan E. Fuzaro Alencar
Physics
The rising interest in quantum computing has led to new quantum systems being developed and researched. Among these are trapped neutral atoms which have several desirable features and may be configured and operated on using lasers in an optical lattice. This work describes the development of a new data acquisition system for use in tuning lasers near the precise hyperfine transition frequencies of Rb 87 atoms, a crucial step in the functionality of a neutral atom trap. This improves on previous implementations that were deprecated and limited in laser frequency sweep range. Integration into the experiment was accomplished using an …

Detecting Road Intersections Automatically From Satellite Images Using A Deep Learning Approach, Fatmaelzahraa Eltaher, Luis Miralles-Pechuán, Jane Courtney, Susan Mckeever
Datasets
Automatic detection of road intersections is an important task in various domains such as navigation, route planning, traffic prediction, and road network extraction. Road intersections range from simple three-way T-junctions (degree 3) to complex large-scale junctions with many branches. The location of intersections and their complexity is an important consideration in route planning, such as the requirement to avoid complex intersections on pedestrian journeys. This is relevant to vulnerable road users such as People with Blindness or Visually Impairment (PBVI) or children. Route planning applications, however, do not give information about the location or complexity of intersections as this information …
High Performance Data Acquisition And Analysis Routines For The Nab Experiment, David Mathews
High Performance Data Acquisition And Analysis Routines For The Nab Experiment, David Mathews
Theses and Dissertations--Physics and Astronomy
Probes of the Standard Model of particle physics are pushing further and further into the so-called “precision frontier”. In order to reach the precision goals of these experiments, a combination of elegant experimental design and robust data acquisition and analysis is required. Two experiments that embody this philosophy are the Nab and Calcium-45 experiments. These experiments are probing the understanding of the weak interaction by examining the beta decay of the free neutron and Calcium-45 respectively. They both aim to measure correlation parameters in the neutron beta decay alphabet, a and b. The parameter a, the electron-neutrino correlation coefficient, is …

High Resolution Diagnostic Tools For Superconducting Radio Frequency Cavities, I. Parajuli, G. Ciovati, J. R. Delayen
Physics Faculty Publications
Superconducting radio-frequency (SRF) cavities are one of the fundamental building blocks of modern particle accelerators. To achieve the highest quality factors (1010–1011), SRF cavities are operated at liquid helium temperatures. Magnetic flux trapped on the surface of SRF cavities during cool-down below the critical temperature is one of the leading sources of residual RF losses. Instruments capable of detecting the distribution of trapped flux on the cavity surface are in high demand in order to better understand its relation to the cavity material, surface treatments and environmental conditions. We have designed, developed, and commissioned two high-resolution …
Industrial Control System Data Resiliency, Daniel A. Bovard
Industrial Control System Data Resiliency, Daniel A. Bovard
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
This thesis identifies and fortifies against a critical vulnerability in industrial control system (ICS) security. A properly designed ICS security framework consists of a multi-layered approach starting with heavy fortifications in information technology and ending with control information of operational technology. Currently, ICS security frameworks lack visibility and place blind trust in devices at the lowest level of the control hierarchy. Attaining control data visibility at the lowest level of the control hierarchy is critical to increasing the resiliency of an ICS security posture. This thesis demonstrates how this data can be captured at the lowest level of the control …

Heel Down And Toe-Off Time Measured With Ultrasonic Doppler System And Force Plate Sensor, Sabin Timsina
Honors Theses
Collie Box is a medical device that measures the gait parameters of the person walk- ing in front of it. This device uses the Ultrasonic Doppler system to extract the heel-contact and toe-off times of a person walking within the range of 2-10 meters. These times are used to determine the leg’s swing phase and double stance times. The ultrasonic transducer of 10mm diameter is driven at 40kHz. At the time of the heel-contact and toe-off, foot velocity is zero while the torso part of the human body is still in motion. The wide directivity of 10mm diameter ultrasonic transducer …

Inlinino: A Modular Software Data Logger For Oceanography, Nils Haëntjens, Emmanuel Boss
Marine Sciences Faculty Scholarship
Inlinino is an open-source software data logger whose main purpose is to log scientific measurements collected during extended periods at sea. Here, we present an application of this software to data collected with commercial instrumentation. Inlinino also provides real-time visualization of the recorded observations, which helps users troubleshoot instruments in the field and prevents the collection of bad data. Inlinino is written in Python and runs on regular computers for instruments that have a serial interface. For less than $57, we built a separate data acquisition module—a precision analog-to-serial converter—for interfacing instruments that output analog signals to Inlinino. Inlinino was …

Downhole Drilling Processing Data Acquisition And Stick Slip Characteristic Analysis, Huang Sheng, Zhang Tao, Chongjun Huang, Yumei Li, Deng Hu, Zhang Xia
Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: During oil drilling process, drill string vibrations are detrimental to the bit and drill string, which even causes failure of equipment. Researches show that, studying the law of near bit vibration data can reduce non-production time (NPT) and improve drilling efficiency. This paper uses power spectral density and wavelet transform to analyze vibration signals, then compares with normal drilling situation to find out stick slip characteristics. The results show that, when stick slip occurs, the mean value of lateral vibration fluctuates greatly, which indicates stick slip is mainly based on torsional vibration. From the perspective of power spectral density …

A Detection And Data Acquisition System For Precision Beta Decay Spectroscopy, Aaron P. Jezghani
Theses and Dissertations--Physics and Astronomy
Free neutron and nuclear beta decay spectroscopy serves as a robust laboratory for investigations of the Standard Model of Particle Physics. Observables such as decay product angular correlations and energy spectra overconstrain the Standard Model and serve as a sensitive probe for Beyond the Standard Model physics. Improved measurement of these quantities is necessary to complement the TeV scale physics being conducted at the Large Hadron Collider. The UCNB, 45Ca, and Nab experiments aim to improve upon existing measurements of free neutron decay angular correlations and set new limits in the search for exotic couplings in beta decay. To …
Test Of New Readout Electronics For The Bonus12 Experiment, Mathieu Ehrhart
Test Of New Readout Electronics For The Bonus12 Experiment, Mathieu Ehrhart
Physics Theses & Dissertations
For decades, electron-proton scattering experiments have been providing a large amount of data on the proton structure function. However, because of the instability of free neutrons, fewer experiments have been able to study the neutron structure function. The BONuS collaboration at Jefferson Laboratory addresses this challenge by scattering electrons off a deuterium target, using a RTPC capable of detecting the low-momentum spectator protons near the target. Events of electrons scattering on almost free neutrons are selected by constraining the spectator protons to very low momenta and very backward scattering angles. In 2005, BONuS successfully measured the neutron structure with scattering …

Physics Capstone Projects
“Science!”, is an exuberant exclamation of achievement or satisfaction in the actual results of science that can be heard in a loud comic tone from time to time throughout the Geology department. Science is also defined as, “knowledge about or study of the natural world based on facts learned through experiments and observation” by Merriam-Webster dictionary. Whether the science is Physics or Geology, Biology or Chemistry, scientists seem to get excited when science happens. But science is always happening, so scientists should always be excited and exuberant, which if math serves me correctly would definitely equal happy.

Data collection from deployed sensor networks can be with static sink, ground-based mobile sink, or Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) based mobile aerial data collector. Considering the large-scale sensor networks and peculiarity of the deployed environments, aerial data collection based on controllable UAV has more advantages. In this paper, we have designed a basic framework for aerial data collection, which includes the following five components: deployment of networks, nodes positioning, anchor points searching, fast path planning for UAV, and data collection from network. We have identified the key challenges in each of them and have proposed efficient solutions. This includes proposal …
Coalescence Of Bubbles And Drops In An Outer Fluid, Joseph Paulsen, Remi Carmigniani, Anerudh Kannan, Justin C. Burton
Coalescence Of Bubbles And Drops In An Outer Fluid, Joseph Paulsen, Remi Carmigniani, Anerudh Kannan, Justin C. Burton
Physics - All Scholarship
When two liquid drops touch, a microscopic connecting liquid bridge forms and rapidly grows as the two drops merge into one. Whereas coalescence has been thoroughly studied when drops coalesce in vacuum or air, many important situations involve coalescence in a dense surrounding fluid, such as oil coalescence in brine. Here we study the merging of gas bubbles and liquid drops in an external fluid. Our data indicate that the flows occur over much larger length scales in the outer fluid than inside the drops themselves. Thus, we find that the asymptotic early regime is always dominated by the viscosity …

The rapid growth and increasing popularity of smartphone technology is putting sophisticated data-collection tools in the hands of more and more citizens. This has exciting implications for the expanding field of citizen science. With smartphonebased applications (apps), it is now increasingly practical to remotely acquire high quality citizen-submitted data at a fraction of the cost of a traditional study. Yet, one impediment to citizen science projects is the question of how to train participants. The traditional ‘‘in-person’’ training model, while effective, can be cost prohibitive as the spatial scale of a project increases. To explore possible solutions, we analyze three …

From an expert's perspective, an Android phone is a large data repository that can be stored either locally or remotely. Besides, its platform allows analysts to acquire device data, collecting information about its owner and facts that are under investigation. This way, by exploring and cross referencing that rich data source, one can get information related to unlawful acts and its perpetrator. There are widespread and well documented approaches to forensic examining mobile devices and computers. Nevertheless, they are not specific nor detailed enough to examine modern smartphones, since these devices have internal memories whose removal or mirroring procedures are …

Wave Propagation At The Interface Of A Two-Layer Fluid System In The Laboratory, Chen-Yuan Chen, John Rong-Chung Hsu, Cheng-Wu Chen, Ching-Feng Kuo, Hsin-Hsun Chen, Min-Hung Cheng
Journal of Marine Science and Technology
A series of laboratory experiments on internal solitary wave (ISW) had been conducted in a two-layer fluid system. Internal solitary waves were generated in laboratory which was controlled by several variables, including different layer thickness ratios H1/H2, interface differences ηo, and the density ratios ρ1/ρ2. The wave flume used in this experiment was 12 meter long with a cross-section 0.5 m wide by 0.7m in height. Five ultrasonic probes placed at equidistance recorded the interface fluctuations, and one density probe measured the change of density across the interface. Data collection and processing were carried out via control software. This paper …

Tooling Data Collection System, Judith S. Brown
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
This paper provides supporting documentation for the development and implementation of a Tooling Data Collection System. The project replaced a primitive Microsoft Excel log sheet. The original workstation for the data acquisition was a standalone system with limited access to the corporate network information and engineering resources. The need for a system revision and upgrade escalated due to the increasing prices of raw materials for component stamping. Refining this process to minimize the scrap generated was the main objective of the Tooling Data Collection System. The intent was for the information to provide the engineers with a mechanism to reduce …
Applying Reflection Tomography In The Postmigration Domain To Multifold Ground-Penetrating Radar Data, John H. Bradford
Applying Reflection Tomography In The Postmigration Domain To Multifold Ground-Penetrating Radar Data, John H. Bradford
CGISS Publications and Presentations
Acquisition and processing of multifold ground-penetrating radar (GPR) data enable detailed measurements of lateral velocity variability. The velocities constrain interpretation of subsurface materials and lead to significant improvement in image accuracy when coupled with prestack depth migration (PSDM). Reflection tomography in the postmigration domain was introduced in the early 1990s for velocity estimation in seismic reflection. This robust, accurate method is directly applicable in multifold GPR imaging. At a contaminated waste facility within the U.S. Department of Energy’s Hanford site in Washington, the method is used to identify significant lateral and vertical velocity heterogeneity associated with infilled waste pits. Using …
Temperature Dependence Of Homogeneous Nucleation Rates For Water: Near Equivalence Of The Empirical Fit Of Wölk And Strey, And The Scaled Nucleation Model, Barbara N. Hale
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
It is pointed out that the temperature fitting function of Wölk and Strey [J. Phys. Chem. 105, 11683 (2001)], recently shown to convert the Becker-Döring [Ann. Phys. (Leipzig) 24, 719 (1935)] nucleation rate into an expression in agreement with much of the experimental water nucleation rate data, also converts the Becker-Döring rate into a form nearly equivalent with the scaled nucleation rate model, Jscaled=Joc exp[-16πΩ3(Tc/T-1)3/3(ln S)2]. In the latter expression Joc is the inverse thermal wavelength cubed/sec, evaluated at Tc.

Micro-Bathymetric Mapping Using Acoustic Range Images, Christopher Roman, Hanumant Singh
Christopher N. Roman
This work focuses on the creation of high resolution micro-bathymetric maps using a high frequency pencil beam sonar. These maps typically cover areas of 10's to 100's of square meters. Data is collected using a sonar mounted to an underwater vehicle that can be positioned at discrete locations on the sea floor or flown in a survey pattern above the bottom. Specifically, we are focused on improving the accuracy of these terrain maps by merging sonar pings taken from multiple vantage points over the same location. This requires the adaption of data registration techniques to handle errors related to the …
