Doctoral Theses
An image is a recorded replication of natural scene or objects using suitable sensor and recording media. The visual quality of the recorded image may be enhanced using various types of low-level processing namely noise smoothing, contrast enhancement. The images of the same scene recorded by several sensors reveal more inforination but in their own respective ways. This advantage of multi-sensor imaging system is real- ized through the fusion of the multimodal images. One more important higher-level processing is segmentation where the image is decomposed into a set of meaningful regions ( e.g. objects and background). An image, in general, …

On Some Generalized Transforms For Signal Decomposition And Reconstruction., Yumnam Singh Dr.
Doctoral Theses
In this thesis, we propose two new subband transforms entitled ISITRA and YKSK transforms and their possible applications in image compression and encryption. Both these transforms are developed based on a common model of multiplication known as Bino’s model of multiplication. ISITRA is a convolution based transforms i.e., that both forward and inverse transform of ISITRA is based on convolution as in DWT or 2-channel filter bank. However, it is much more general than the existing DWT or 2-channel filter bank scheme in the sense that it we can get different kinds of filters in addition to the filters specified …

Sign Classification Using Local And Meta-Features, Marwan A. Mattar,, Allen R. Hanson,, Erik G. Learned-Miller

Our world is populated with visual information that a sighted person makes use of daily. Unfortunately, the visually impaired are deprived from such information, which limits their mobility in unconstrained environments. To help alleviate this we are developing a wearable system [1, 19] that is capable of detecting and recognizing signs in natural scenes. The system is composed of two main components, sign detection and recognition. The sign detector, uses a conditional maximum entropy model to find regions in an image that correspond to a sign. The sign recognizer matches the hypothesized sign regions with sign images in a database. …
Sense -Based Text Classification By Semantic Hierarchy Representation, Xiaogang Peng
Sense -Based Text Classification By Semantic Hierarchy Representation, Xiaogang Peng
Doctoral Dissertations
Automatic classification of web pages is an effective way to facilitate the process of retrieving information from the Internet. Currently, two major classification methods are used in this area: keyword-based classification and sense-based classification. For keyword-based classification, keywords often have different semantic meanings, and the correct keyword matching is largely based on using exactly the same keywords. Thus, the classification results of keyword-based classification are not always satisfying. Many sense-based classification algorithms and systems have been presented, but they pay little attention to the relationship between senses. In this dissertation, we present a method to automatically classify documents based on …

Query Rewriting For Extracting Data Behind Html Forms, Xueqi Chen
Theses and Dissertations
Much of the information on the Web is stored in specialized searchable databases and can only be accessed by interacting with a form or a series of forms. As a result, enabling automated agents and Web crawlers to interact with form-based interfaces designed primarily for humans is of great value. This thesis describes a system that can fill out Web forms automatically according to a given user query against a global schema for an application domain and, to the extent possible, extract just the relevant data behind these Web forms. Experimental results on two application domains show that the approach …

Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works
The article explains what you need to do to incorporate XML directly into your computational science application. The exploration involves the use of a standard parser to automatically build object trees entirely from application-specific classes. This discussion very much focuses on object-oriented programming languages such as Java and Python, but it can work for non-object-oriented languages as well. The ideas in the article provide a glimpse into the Natural XML research project.

A Key Management Scheme For Wireless Sensor Networks Using Deployment Knowledge, Wenliang Du, Jing Deng, Yunghsiang S. Han, Shigang Chen
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - All Scholarship
To achieve security in wireless sensor networks, it is important to be able to encrypt messages sent among sensor nodes. Keys for encryption purposes must be agreed upon by communicating nodes. Due to resource constraints, achieving such key agreement in wireless sensor networks is non-trivial. Many key agreement schemes used in general networks, such as Diffie-Hellman and public-key based schemes, are not suitable for wireless sensor networks. Pre-distribution of secret keys for all pairs of nodes is not viable due to the large amount of memory used when the network size is large. Recently, a random key predistribution scheme and …

Contrast Enhancement Of Ultrasound Images Using Shunting Inhibitory Cellular Neural Networks, Murali M. Gogineni
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Evolving from neuro-biological insights, neural network technology gives a computer system an amazing capacity to actually generate decisions dynamically. However, as the amount of data to be processed increases, there is a demand for developing new types of networks such as Cellular Neural Networks (CNN), to ease the computational burden without compromising the outcomes. The objective of this thesis is to research the capability of Shunting Inhibitory Cellular Neural Networks (SICNN) to solve the clarity problems in ultrasound imaging. In this thesis, we begin by reviewing a number of traditional enhancement techniques and measures. Since the entire work of this …

A Generalised Feedforward Neural Network Architecture And Its Applications To Classification And Regression, Ganesh Arulampalam
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Shunting inhibition is a powerful computational mechanism that plays an important role in sensory neural information processing systems. It has been extensively used to model some important visual and cognitive functions. It equips neurons with a gain control mechanism that allows them to operate as adaptive non-linear filters. Shunting Inhibitory Artificial Neural Networks (SIANNs) are biologically inspired networks where the basic synaptic computations are based on shunting inhibition. SIANNs were designed to solve difficult machine learning problems by exploiting the inherent non-linearity mediated by shunting inhibition. The aim was to develop powerful, trainable networks, with non-linear decision surfaces, for classification …

Enhancing The Cs Curriculum With With Aspect-Oriented Software Development (Aosd) And Early Experience, Konstantin Läufer, George K. Thiruvathukal, Tzilla Elrad
Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Aspect-oriented software development (AOSD) is evolving as an important step beyond existing software development approaches such as object-oriented development. An aspect is a module that captures a crosscutting concern, behavior that cuts across different units of abstraction in a software application; expressed as a module, such behavior can be enabled and disabled transparently and non-invasively, without changing the application code itself. Increasing industry demand for expertise in AOSD gives rise to the pedagogical challenge of covering this methodology and its foundations in the computer science curriculum. We present our curricular initiative to incorporate a novel course in AOSD in the …

Doctoral Theses
There is a wide range of economic contexts in which aggregate costs have to be allocated amongst individual agents or components who derive t he benefits from a common project. A firm has to allocate overheard costs atmongst its different divisions. Regulatory authorities have to set taxes or fees on individual users for a variety of services. Partners in a joint venture must share costs (and benefits) of the joint venture. For example, when two doctors share an office they need to divide the cost of office space, medical equipment and secretarial help. If several municipalities use a common water …

On The Approximability Of Linear Ordering And Related Np-Optimization Problems., Sounaka Mishra Dr.
Doctoral Theses
We investigate approximability of both maximum and minimum linear ordering problems (MAX-LOP and MIN-LOP) and several related problems such as the well known feedback set problems, acyclie subdigraph problem and several others and their variants. We show that both MAX-LOP and MIN-LOP are strongly NP-complete, and MIN- LOP, MIN-QAP(S) (a special case of minimum quadratic assignment problem) and MIN-W-FAS are equivalent with respect to strict-reduction. The strict-equivalence is also established among these problems as well as MIN-W-FVS, with weights on arcs/vertices bounded by a polynomial, and the unweighted versions of the feedback set. problems. We also show that MAX-LOP is strict-equivalent …
Knowledge-Based Task Structure Planning For An Information Gathering Agent, John Phelps
Knowledge-Based Task Structure Planning For An Information Gathering Agent, John Phelps
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
An effective solution to model and apply planning domain knowledge for deliberation and action in probabilistic, agent-oriented control is presented. Specifically, the addition of a task structure planning component and supporting components to an agent-oriented architecture and agent implementation is described. For agent control in risky or uncertain environments, an approach and method of goal reduction to task plan sets and schedules of action is presented. Additionally, some issues related to component-wise, situation-dependent control of a task planning agent that schedules its tasks separately from planning them are motivated and discussed.

Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works
This interdisciplinary project explores the potential for handheld/wireless (H/W) technology in the context of language education within and beyond the classroom. Specifically, we have designed and implemented a suite of multi-platform (desktop/laptop, handheld, and browser) applications to enhance the teaching of South Asian languages such as Hindi-Urdu. Such languages are very difficult to learn, let alone write, and H/W devices (with their handwriting/drawing capabilities) can play a significant role in overcoming the learning curve. The initial application suite includes a character/word tracer, a word splitter/joiner, a smart flashcard with audio, contextual augmented stories for reading comprehension, and a poetic metronome. …

Scalable Implementations Of Mpi Atomicity For Concurrent Overlapping I/O, Wei-Keng Liao, Alok Choudhary, Kenin Coloma, George K. Thiruvathukal, Lee Ward, Eric Russell, Neil Pundit
Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works
For concurrent I/O operations, atomicity defines the results in the overlapping file regions simultaneously read/written by requesting processes. Atomicity has been well studied at the file system level, such as POSIX standard. In this paper, we investigate the problems arising from the implementation of MPI atomicity for concurrent overlapping write access and provide a few programming solutions. Since the MPI definition of atomicity differs from the POSIX one, an implementation that simply relies on the POSIX file systems does not guarantee correct MPI semantics. To have a correct implementation of atomic I/O in MPI, we examine the efficiency of three …

Pattern Recognition For Electric Power System Protection, Yong Sheng
Doctoral Dissertations
The objective of this research is to demonstrate pattern recognition tools such as decision trees (DTs) and neural networks that will improve and automate the design of relay protection functions in electric power systems. Protection functions that will benefit from the research include relay algorithms for high voltage transformer protection (TP) and for high impedance fault (HIF) detection. A methodology, which uses DTs and wavelet analysis to distinguish transformer internal faults from other conditions that are easily mistaken for internal faults, has been developed. Also, a DT based solution is proposed to discriminate HIFs from normal operations that may confuse …

Boolean Functions With Important Cryptographic Properties., Subhamoy Maitra Dr.
Doctoral Theses
In this thesis we concentrate on properties of cryptographically significant Boolean functions. The techniques are mainly combinstorial and provide new resulta on enumeration and construction of such functions. Initially we concentrate on a partieular subset of Boolean functions called the symmetric Boolean functions. A closed form expression for the Walsh transform of an arbitrary symmetric Boolean function is presented. We completely characterize the symmetric functions with maximum nonlinearity and show that the maximum nonlinearity of n-variable symmetrie function can be 2n-1-2[n-1l2], Moreover, new classes of symmetric balanced and symmetric correlation immune functions are considered. We provide a randomised heuristic to construct balanced …

The term Very Large Scale Integration (VLSI) reflects the capability of semi- conductor industry to fabricate a complex electronic circuit consisting of millions of components on a single silicon substrate. The growth of semiconductor technol- ogy in recent years has been described by "Moore's law", enunciated in the late 1960s, which projected quadrupling of components in a chip in every three to four years. Several factors contributed to this tremendous growth : (i) reduction of line width of the basic device and interconnection wires due to the development of high- resolution lithographic techniques and improved processing capabilities, (ii) increase in …

MADS (Multi-mission Attitude Determination System) is a new software package used to determine the attitude of instruments on a high-altitude balloon employed for scientific experiments. There is no existing system for the automated determination of the attitude of instruments in balloon experiments, so we have developed MADS to do the data analysis for balloon experiments to find the location of astrophysical sources such as gamma-ray or x-ray sources.
The two areas that required most work were modeling star trackers and modeling the motion of the balloon. Star trackers are used on satellites, but are far too expensive and sophisticated to …
