Adsorption Kinetics And Phase Behavior Of Particles Adsorbed At An Interface, Shaghayegh Darjani Jan 2021

Adsorption Kinetics And Phase Behavior Of Particles Adsorbed At An Interface, Shaghayegh Darjani

Dissertations and Theses

The ability to predict the adsorption dynamic, phase behavior, and surface pressure of a monolayer of adsorbed particles in two-dimensional systems are key aspects of many current research areas. Examples include phase transitions in amphiphilic monolayers, emulsion stability due to particle adsorption at interfaces, and melting at an interface.

In this thesis, a new approach for deriving the equation of state for a two-dimensional lattice gas is proposed, based on arguments similar to those used in the derivation of the Langmuir-Szyszkowski equation of state for localized adsorption. This work aims to predict the adsorption kinetics and phase behavior of a …

Solvent And Concentration Effects Governing The Hierarchical Organization Of Asphaltenes: A Small-Angle X-Ray Scattering Study, Hasan Rejoanur Rahman Jan 2018

Solvent And Concentration Effects Governing The Hierarchical Organization Of Asphaltenes: A Small-Angle X-Ray Scattering Study, Hasan Rejoanur Rahman

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Asphaltenes are a group of planar molecules found in crude oil and are prone to aggregation which often causes blockage of pipes along the oil production stream resulting a huge economic downside. In an effort to understand the hierarchical organization of asphaltene in different solvents and concentrations, the solution structure of various asphaltene solutions were studied using small-angle x-ray scattering (SAXS). Solvents were chosen based on miscibility maps. Such maps are generated on the critical value of the solubility parameter difference between asphaltenes or asphaltene components, and a range of solvents. The critical factors that affect asphaltene and asphaltene component …

Spectral Induced Polarization (Sip) Response Of Biodegraded Oil In Porous Media, Gamal Z. Abdel Aal, Estella A. Atekwana Feb 2014

Spectral Induced Polarization (Sip) Response Of Biodegraded Oil In Porous Media, Gamal Z. Abdel Aal, Estella A. Atekwana

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Laboratory experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of different oil saturation (0.2- 0.8), wetting conditions (water-wet and oil-wet), and the addition of asphaltene on the spectral induced polarization (SIP) response of biodegraded and fresh crude oil in sand columns. In the water-wet case, no significant differences were observed for both the fresh and biodegraded oil and both displayed an increase in the magnitude of the phase (φ) and decrease in the magnitudes of the real (σ′) and imaginary (σ″) conductivity components with increasing oil saturation. In this instance the SIP response is most likely controlled by the conduction and …

Mass Spectrometric Studies On The Primary Products Of Fast Pyrolysis Of Carbohydrates And The Molecular Structures Of Asphaltenes, And The Development Of A Rastering Probe For Laser-Induced Acoustic Desorption Into An Atmospheric Pressure Chemical Ionization Source, Matthew Robert Hurt Oct 2013

Mass spectrometry (MS) has proven invaluable in the field of mixture analysis and structural elucidation. Tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) utilizing collision-activated dissociation (CAD) has become the technique of choice for structural elucidation of unknown analytes in mixtures. When coupled with gas chromatography (GC) or high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), it allows for trace level analysis of mixture components. In spite of the utility of mass spectrometry in complex mixture analysis, it does have limitations. Traditional GC/MS methods used for the analysis of fast pyrolysis products cannot be used to analyze the primary products, thus limiting the knowledge that can be …
