Improvements To Isru For Rocket Fuel Generation, Justin Sharp May 2023

Improvements To Isru For Rocket Fuel Generation, Justin Sharp

James Madison Undergraduate Research Journal (JMURJ)

The development of efficient in-situ resource utilization (ISRU) technologies is crucial for the establishment of an extraterrestrial, self-sustaining colony. The generation of rocket fuel at potential colony locations is necessary to provide the transportation of people and cargo to and from these locations.Three processes are discussed for the improvement of ISRU methods to generate rocket fuel: electrolysis and electrochemical improvements to the process of crude fuel production, physical and chemical methods for separation of gaseous H2 and O2, and materials and cryogenics engineering for storage and transportation of liquid hydrogen (LH2) and liquid oxygen (LOX). Storage and transportation of cryogenics …

Application Strategy For An Anthraquinonebased Repellent And The Protection Of Soybeans From Canada Goose Depredation, Scott J. Werner, Matthew Gottlob, Charles D. Dieter, Joshua D. Stafford

USDA Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Agricultural crops can sustain extensive damage caused by Canada geese (Branta canadensis) when these crops are planted near wetlands or brood-rearing sites. From 2000 to 2015, South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks spent >$5.6 million to manage damages caused by Canada geese to agricultural crops (primarily soybeans) in South Dakota, USA. For the purpose of developing a repellent application strategy for nonlethal goose damage management, we comparatively evaluated the width of anthraquinone applications (i.e., 9.4 L Flight Control® Plus goose repellent/ha [active ingredient: 50% 9,10-anthraquinone] at 0–36 m versus 0–73 m perpendicular to the edge of wetlands in 2014), the …

Photodynamic Cancer Therapy A Study Of The Photochemical Properties Of Meso-Tetra (2,3,4-Trifluorophenyl) Porphyrin And Meso-Tetra (2,3,5,6-Tetrafluorophenyl) Porphyrin, Delanie L. Newberry Jan 2017

Photodynamic Cancer Therapy A Study Of The Photochemical Properties Of Meso-Tetra (2,3,4-Trifluorophenyl) Porphyrin And Meso-Tetra (2,3,5,6-Tetrafluorophenyl) Porphyrin, Delanie L. Newberry

Honors College Theses

Photodynamic therapy(PDT) is a type of cancer treatment that utilizes photosensitive molecules that absorb photons and use that energy to create cytotoxic molecules. Porphyrins are photosensitive compounds that can be used selectively at the site of cancerous tumors. Their selectivity is due to the fact the porphyrins are generally not toxic in absence of light; in the presence of light, the drug will be activated to produce the cytotoxic molecule, singlet oxygen(1O2 ). 9,10 diphenyl anthracene(DPA) was used to simulate the cancer cells and monitor how effective the porphyrin was in creating 1O2, because DPA reacts with 1O2 form diphenyl …

The magnetic superconductor Ru0.9Sr2YCu2.1O7.9 (Ru-1212Y) has been investigated using neutron diffraction under variable temperature and magnetic field. With the complementary information from magnetization measurements, we propose a magnetic phase diagram T-H for the Ru-1212 system. Uniaxial antiferromagnetic (AFM) order of 1.2μ B/Ru atoms with moments parallel to the c-axis is found below the magnetic transition temperature at ~140 K in the absence of magnetic field. In addition, ferromagnetism (FM) in the ab-plane develops below ~120 K, but is suppressed at lower temperature by superconducting correlations. Externally applied magnetic fields cause Ru-moments to realign from the c-axis to the ab-plane, i.e. …

To search a proper dopant to further improve superconductivity in 11 type Fe-based superconductors makes sense to both their superconductivity mechanism and possible technological applications. In present work, Mg doped FeSe polycrystalline bulks were obtained by a two-step solid-state reaction method. Even though there are many MgSe and iron impurities existing in the Mg heavy doped FeSe bulks, they exhibit obviously increased Tc compared to undoped FeSe sample. It was found that Mg addition has little effect on the crystal lattice parameters of superconducting beta-FeSe, whereas leads to the formation of nano-layered grain structure consisted of MgSe and beta-FeSe …

A Highly Soluble Asymmetric Perylene-Bis (Dicarboximide)-Acceptor System Incorporating A Methylene Bridged Methoxybenzene-Donor: Solvent Dependence Of Charge Transfer Interactions, Rene M. Williams

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

The synthesis and photophysical properties of an asymmetrically substituted perylene-bis(dicarboximide), (PDI), system (1) containing a methylene bridged 4-methoxy-benzene donor and a solubilizing branched C_{13} alkyl chain are described. As compared to most PDIs, the fluorescence of 1 is strongly quenched in polar (but not in non-polar) solvents due to a photo-induced electron transfer process. Transient absorption spectroscopy and time resolved emission in e.g. acetonitrile indicates that upon excitation the radical anion of the PDI is formed with a rate of ca. 3.5 \times 10^9s^{-1}, and the charge transfer state has a lifetime of ca. 3 ns. In the crystal structure of the title compound, C20H14S, the thiophene rings are disordered; such a flip-type disorder is typical for simple, monosubstituted thiophene derivatives. Two planar fragments, the thiophene and the anthracene units, are almost perpendicular in order to relieve the H⋯H steric strains. The crystal packing is determined by van der Waals interactions, π–π stacking between the anthracene fragments, and some weak C—H⋯S and C—H⋯π short directional contacts.

Crystals of the title compd. are orthorhombic, space group Pbca; Z = 4. Mols. lie on crystallog. centers of inversion, but have approx. C2h mol. symmetry. The parallel thiophene rings are almost exactly planar; the overall conformation of the mol. is chair-like. The mols. have voids that could, in principle, accommodate small guest mols., although in the crystal structure access to these voids is blocked by neighboring mols.
