Traditional spectrometers are expensive and non-portable, making them inaccessible to the public. This application will be used in conjunction with spectrometer hardware developed by Erie Open Systems. The hardware itself is 3D printed and, in addition to being portable, enables data to be collected easily. The purpose of this project is to create a cross-platform application capable of reading the output from the spectrometer hardware, calculating the absorbance levels of the sample against the control, and recording the data in tables stored on the cloud. This is the final write-up for an honors research project for the University of Akron Williams Honors College. Synthesis of novel imidazolium salts was conducted. Following synthesis of imidazolium salts, the stability of the compound was tested at 37°C over a 72-hour period to give preliminary information about drug stability in vivo. 2D NMR was also conducted to confirm the structure of TPP-1. The student wrote an experimental protocol for the use of C57BL/6 mice and performed the online CITI training by the IRB to prepare to work with animals in a study of the antitumor properties of imidazolium salts …

Coherency strains appear in interacting atomic monolayers due to differing bond lengths, which can arise from different materials or geometries. Examples include extended monolayers interacting with a substrate and the interacting walls of a multi-walled carbon nanotube. These strains can induce various equilibrium configurations, which we will analyze by means of a phenomenological model that incorporates forces from bond stretching and bending within each layer and the weak van der Waals interactions connecting the separate layers. An expression for the drag transresistivity in a graphene double layer system exhibiting potential fluctuations modelled as a periodic oscillation in electron density is derived. Our model starts from the Coulombic interaction and we derive the correlation between a sinusoidal fluctuation in electron density in the first layer and the induced electron density in the second layer. Previous models in the literature have employed an arbitrary correlation between each layer’s electron density, and the model presented is the first attempt in the literature to explicitly derive this correlation. Antibiotic-resistant bacteria present an obstacle for physicians and researchers. Over 35,000 people die annually in the U.S. from antibiotic-resistant infections each year. New antibiotics are being developed and studied, and natural products are screened to find potential new antibiotics. In this study, four polymer antibiotics with polyester backbones and peptide functional groups were studied with Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus to determine the polymers’ efficacies on the different bacteria and compare the polymers to each other. Timed fluorescence microscopy experiments were performed to determine how long it takes the antibiotics to compromise the membrane integrity of fluorescently-labelled E. coli. …

Chemonic™ CCG-6 surfactant is a water-soluble poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) conjugated alkyl glyceride emollient. This surfactant exists as a complex mixture of a glycerol cores conjugated with poly(ethylene glycol) branches (PEGylation) that were partially esterified with caprylic (C8) and capric (C10) acids. These may be esterified on one, two, or all three arms of the glyceride. The architecture of the structures in this mixture was studied using multidimensional mass spectrometry (MS). Mass spectrometry was interfaced with ultra-performance liquid chromatography (UPLC) and ion mobility (IM) separation. U.S. Census Explorer is a software application that is designed to provide tools for intuitive exploration and analysis of United States census data for non-technical users. The application serves as an interface into the U.S. Census Bureau’s data API that enables a complete workflow from data acquisition to data visualization without the need for technical intervention from the user. The suite of tools provided include a graphical user interface for dynamically querying U.S. census data, geographic visualizations, and the ability to download your work to common spreadsheet and image formats for inclusion in external works.

The University of Akron employs a web application that allows residents to check guests into each residence hall on campus. However, while most salts have very high melting temperatures, ionic liquids are a class of compounds that can melt at very low temperatures, often at room temperatures. Over the course of this semester, promising preliminary research into a novel area of inorganic chemistry has been underway. Multiple different bis(arylimino)isoindolines (BAI), a compound made from the disubstitution of diiminoisoindoline with aryl amines to form planar tridentate ligands, were tested to determine if the structure could be forcefully bent to fit a facial binding mode. It was theorized that the bending of the usually planar chelate would cause an electronic change, destabilizing the orbitals. Details of stereomic microstructural patterns are directly related to the distribution and composition of connective tissues, which are rarely preserved in fossils. This study involved participants who were golfers with a four-handicap or better taking a survey of their preferences of having the flagstick in and out and then assessing their putting from various distances with the flagstick in and out.
