Investigation Of Nbnx Thin Films And Nanoparticles Grown By Pulsed Laser Deposition And Thermal Diffusion, Ashraf Hassan Farha Jan 2013

Investigation Of Nbnx Thin Films And Nanoparticles Grown By Pulsed Laser Deposition And Thermal Diffusion, Ashraf Hassan Farha

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Niobium nitride films (NbNx) were grown on Nb and Si (100) substrates using pulsed laser deposition (PLD), laser heating, and thermal diffusion methods. Niobium nitride films were deposited on Nb substrates using PLD with a Q-switched Nd: YAG laser (λ = 1064 nm, 40 ns pulse width, and 10 Hz repetition rate) at different laser fluences, different nitrogen background pressures and deposition temperatures. The effect of changing PLD parameters for films done by PLD was studied. The seen observations establish guidelines for adjusting the laser parameters to achieve the desired morphology and phase of the grown NbNx films.

When the …

Observations And Modeling Forcing Mechanisms For The Coastal Dynamics Of The Upper Gulf Of Thailand, Suriyan Saramul Jan 2013

Observations And Modeling Forcing Mechanisms For The Coastal Dynamics Of The Upper Gulf Of Thailand, Suriyan Saramul

OES Theses and Dissertations

A numerical model based on the Princeton Ocean Model (130M) with ∼1 km horizontal grid and 21 vertical layers has been used to study the influence of wind stresses, river discharges, surface heat fluxes and tides on the three-dimensional circulation of the upper Gulf of Thailand (UGOT). Analysis of observations, including sea level data, provided additional information to support the model simulations. The UGOT is a shallow coastal system, ∼1°×1° in size with the average depth of only 15 m. Sensitivity studies evaluate how the dynamics is affected by surface wind stresses, river discharges, and surface heat fluxes. The impact …

Watershed-Scale Hybrid Stochastic-Deterministic Modeling Framework And Diffused Sources Superpositioning, Ruby Juvah Damalie Jan 2013

Watershed-Scale Hybrid Stochastic-Deterministic Modeling Framework And Diffused Sources Superpositioning, Ruby Juvah Damalie

Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Predicting hydrologic system behavior is imperative to planning and management of water resources. The study developed an integrated hybrid stochastic and deterministic framework to improve prediction accuracy for overland flow and diffused sources in a watershed. The methodology includes sampling input parameters at system level and contribution of nonpoint source from hydrologically disconnected areas (heretofore referred to as system-level approach and superpositioning respectively). System-level approach includes the integration of a topography-based sampling grid generalized linear model developed by the study and Monte Carlo methods. The superpositioning method adopts in-stream water quality equation for overland flow pollution estimation.

The system-level approach …

Toric Varieties And Cobordism, Andrew Wilfong Jan 2013

Toric Varieties And Cobordism, Andrew Wilfong

Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics

A long-standing problem in cobordism theory has been to find convenient manifolds to represent cobordism classes. For example, in the late 1950's, Hirzebruch asked which complex cobordism classes can be represented by smooth connected algebraic varieties. This question is still open. Progress can be made on this and related problems by studying certain convenient connected algebraic varieties, namely smooth projective toric varieties. The primary focus of this dissertation is to determine which complex cobordism classes can be represented by smooth projective toric varieties. A complete answer is given up to dimension six, and a partial answer is described in dimension …

On A Paley-Wiener Theorem For The Zs-Akns Scattering Transform, Ryan D. Walker

Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics

In this thesis, we establish an analog of the Paley-Wiener Theorem for the ZS-AKNS scattering transform on a set of real potentials. We also demonstrate one application of our techniques to the study of an inverse spectral problem for a half-line Miura potential Schroedinger equation.

Relative Perturbation Theory For Diagonally Dominant Matrices, Megan Dailey Jan 2013

Relative Perturbation Theory For Diagonally Dominant Matrices, Megan Dailey

Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics

Diagonally dominant matrices arise in many applications. In this work, we exploit the structure of diagonally dominant matrices to provide sharp entrywise relative perturbation bounds. We first generalize the results of Dopico and Koev to provide relative perturbation bounds for the LDU factorization with a well conditioned L factor. We then establish relative perturbation bounds for the inverse that are entrywise and independent of the condition number. This allows us to also present relative perturbation bounds for the linear system Ax=b that are independent of the condition number. Lastly, we continue the work of Ye to provide relative perturbation bounds …

Amalgamation Of Nucleosides And Amino Acids In Antibiotic Biosynthesis, Sandra H. Barnard Jan 2013

Amalgamation Of Nucleosides And Amino Acids In Antibiotic Biosynthesis, Sandra H. Barnard

Theses and Dissertations--Pharmacy

The rapid increase in antibiotic resistance demands the identification of novel antibiotics with novel targets. One potential antibacterial target is the biosynthesis of peptidoglycan cell wall, which is both ubiquitous and necessary for bacterial survival. Both the caprazamycin-related compounds A-90289 and muraminomicin, as well as the capuramycin-related compounds A-503083 and A-102395 are potent inhibitors of the translocase I enzyme, one of the key enzymes required for cell wall biosynthesis. The caprazamycin-related compounds contain a core nonproteinogen b-hydroxy-a-amino acid referred to as 5’-C-glycyluridine (GlyU). Residing within the biosynthetic gene clusters of the aforementioned compounds is a shared open reading …

Evaluating The Sustainability Of Four Organic Vegetable Production Systems, Delia W. Scott Jan 2013

Evaluating The Sustainability Of Four Organic Vegetable Production Systems, Delia W. Scott

Theses and Dissertations--Plant and Soil Sciences

A field study evaluating the sustainability of four organic vegetable production systems was conducted in Lexington, Kentucky in 2006 and 2007. The four systems included no-till, raised beds covered with biodegradable black mulch, bare ground with shallow cultivation, and bare ground with shallow cultivation and wood chip mulch. The two-year study compared yield, weed control, labor, and costs associated with each system, as well as physical, chemical, and microbiological soil characteristics. In 2006, tomatoes (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) were grown in the four systems, with no significant difference in yield. Summer squash (Cucurbita pepo L.) was grown in the …

Measurement Of Polarized Proton-Proton Elastic Scattering At The Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (Rhic), Ivan Koralt Jan 2013

Measurement Of Polarized Proton-Proton Elastic Scattering At The Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (Rhic), Ivan Koralt

Physics Theses & Dissertations

Elastic proton-proton (pp) scattering is one of the most fundamental processes in nature and yet, it is one of the most difficult to describe. There are two interactions involved in this process: electromagnetic (Coulomb) and hadronic (strong) interactions. Underlying exchange mechanisms of these two interactions are the virtual photon and the Pomeron exchange, respectively. The difficulty of elastic pp scattering arises from the fact that the nature of the Pomeron and its exchange are not well understood and need a theoretical approach, which is still under development.

At the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) at Brookhaven National Lab …

Room-Temperature Vibrational Properties Of The Bimn2o5 Mullite, F Silva Júnior, C. Paschoal, R. Almeida, R. Moreira, W. Paraguassu, M. Castro Junior, A. Ayala, Z. Kann, Michael Lufaso Dec 2012

Room-Temperature Vibrational Properties Of The Bimn2o5 Mullite, F Silva Júnior, C. Paschoal, R. Almeida, R. Moreira, W. Paraguassu, M. Castro Junior, A. Ayala, Z. Kann, Michael Lufaso

Michael W. Lufaso

Raman and infrared spectroscopic measurements were performed and combined with lattice dynamics simulations in order to describe the room temperature vibrational properties of the BiMn2O5 mullite ceramic. A total of 13 Raman active modes and 19 infrared active modes were observed. The lattice dynamics simulation was used to assign the observed bands and to discuss the phonon behavior of this compound. The obtained dielectric constant and unloaded quality factor parameters for BMO ceramic obtained from the infrared data suggest the applicability of the BiMn2O5 as a possible candidate to microwave applications.

Instrumental Variable Analyses: Exploiting Natural Randomness To Understand Causal Mechanisms, Theodore Iwashyna, Edward Kennedy Dec 2012

Instrumental Variable Analyses: Exploiting Natural Randomness To Understand Causal Mechanisms, Theodore Iwashyna, Edward Kennedy

Edward H. Kennedy

Instrumental variable analysis is a technique commonly used in the social sciences to provide evidence that a treatment causes an outcome, as contrasted with evidence that a treatment is merely associated with differences in an outcome. To extract such strong evidence from observational data, instrumental variable analysis exploits situations where some degree of randomness affects how patients are selected for a treatment. An instrumental variable is a characteristic of the world that leads some people to be more likely to get the specific treatment we want to study but does not otherwise change thosepatients’ outcomes. This seminar explains, in nonmathematical …

Effects Of Fluctuating Energy Input On The Small Scales In Turbulence, Greg Voth Dec 2012

Effects Of Fluctuating Energy Input On The Small Scales In Turbulence, Greg Voth

Greg A. Voth

In the standard cascade picture of three-dimensional turbulent fluid flows, energy is input at a constant rate at large scales. Energy is then transferred to smaller scales by an intermittent process that has been the focus of a vast literature. However, the energy input at large scales is not constant in most real turbulent flows. We explore the signatures of these fluctuations of large-scale energy input on small-scale turbulence statistics. Measurements were made in a flow between oscillating grids, with Taylor Reynolds number up to 262, in which temporal variations in the large-scale energy input can be introduced by modulating …

Improved Cardiovascular Risk Prediction Using Nonparametric Regression And Electronic Health Record Data, Edward Kennedy, Wyndy Wiitala, Rodney Hayward, Jeremy Sussman Dec 2012

Improved Cardiovascular Risk Prediction Using Nonparametric Regression And Electronic Health Record Data, Edward Kennedy, Wyndy Wiitala, Rodney Hayward, Jeremy Sussman

Edward H. Kennedy

Use of the electronic health record (EHR) is expected to increase rapidly in the near future, yet little research exists on whether analyzing internal EHR data using flexible, adaptive statistical methods could improve clinical risk prediction. Extensive implementation of EHR in the Veterans Health Administration provides an opportunity for exploration. Our objective was to compare the performance of various approaches for predicting risk of cerebrovascular and cardiovascular (CCV) death, using traditional risk predictors versus more comprehensive EHR data. Regression methods outperformed the Framingham risk score, even with the same predictors (AUC increased from 71% to 73% and calibration also improved). …

A Lagrangian Which Mathematically Models Lambda Cdm Cosmology And Explains The Null Results Of Dark Astroparticle Searches., Hontas Farmer

Hontas F Farmer

Background: The Lambda CDM model or is the standard model of modern cosmology. It is named for dark energy and cold dark matter. This model contains a number of separate components with different mathematical formulations. Strong observational evidence for dark matter has been found by astronomy. At the same time astroparticle physics observations have not found solid evidence of dark matter. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to reconcile observations of dark matter effects on the galactic and cosmological scales with the null results of astroparticle physics observations such as CDMS and ANTARES. This paper will also provide a …
