Breaking From Tradition: India And The Path To Development, Angel M. Newsom Oct 2009

Breaking From Tradition: India And The Path To Development, Angel M. Newsom

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

"How could a country with more than 300 million illiterate people also have the kind of scientific human resources that bring some of the world's largest corporations to base their R&D labs in India?" (Tripathi, 2007, p.68). This question acknowledges the coexistence of two vastly different worlds within one country. On one hand, India is making significant progress on the path to becoming a developed country;one that can provide the basic fundamentals of living for its citizens while sustaining progressive economic growth; on the other hand, it must overcome challenges to this goal that relate to a crumbling infrastructure, poverty, …

Doubt And The Values Of An Ignorance-Based World View For Restoration: Coastal Louisiana Wetlands, R. Eugene Turner Aug 2009

Doubt And The Values Of An Ignorance-Based World View For Restoration: Coastal Louisiana Wetlands, R. Eugene Turner

Faculty Publications

Embracing doubt, a signature strength of science, is an essential core component of an ignorance-based-world view (IBWV) that assumes the areas of certainty are small relative to the large field of ignorance. The contrasting knowledge-based world view (KBWV) assumes that small and mostly insignificant knowledge gaps exist. When the KBWV is combined with a sense of urgency to “do something,” then the intellectual landscape is flattened, the introduction of new ideas is impeded, monitoring and adaptive management is marginalized, risky behaviors continue, and social learning is restricted. The history of three coastal Louisiana land-uses (agricultural impoundment, marsh management, and dredging) …

High altitude balloon platforms are ideal for providing hands-on research experiences for students in physics, atmospheric science, engineering, and other aerospace-related disciplines. We describe a basic high altitude balloon platform that can be constructed and operated by undergraduate students. The existing HARBOR and BOREALIS programs are used to illustrate some possible science and engineering research projects that students can pursue as part of a high-altitude flight program.

Experimental Studies Of Nacs, Seth T. Ashman, C. M. Wolfe, J. P. Huennekens May 2009

Experimental Studies Of Nacs, Seth T. Ashman, C. M. Wolfe, J. P. Huennekens

Engineering & Physics Faculty Publications

We present experimental studies of excited electronic states of the NaCs molecule that are currently underway in our laboratory. The optical-optical double resonance method is used to obtain Doppler-free excitation spectra for several excited states. These data are being used to obtain RydbergKlein-Rees (RKR) or Inverse Perturbation Approach (IPA) potential curves for these states. We are also trying to map the bound portion of the 1(a) 3Σ + potential using resolved laser-induced fluorescence and Fourier transform spectroscopy to record transitions into the shallow well. Bound-free spectra from single ro-vibrational levels of electronically excited states to the repulsive wall of the …

Polarization Spectroscopy And Collisions In Nak, Seth T. Ashman, C. M. Wolfe, J. Huennekens, B. Beser, J. Bai, A. M. Lyyra

Engineering & Physics Faculty Publications

We report current work to study transfer of population and orientation in collisions of NaK molecules with argon and potassium atoms using polarization labeling (PL) and laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) spectroscopy. In the PL experiment, a circularly polarized pump laser excites a specific NaK A1Σ +(v=16, J) ← X1Σ +(v=0, J ± 1) transition, creating an orientation (non-uniform MJ level distribution) in both levels. The linear polarized probe laser is scanned over various 3 1Π(v=8, J 0 ± 1) ← A1Σ +(v=16, J 0 ) transitions. The probe laser passes through a crossed linear polarizer before detection, and signal is recorded …

We Owe It To The Earth: The Importance Of Environmentally-Friendly Lifestyle Changes During The Transitional College Years, Jessica E. Clark Apr 2009

We Owe It To The Earth: The Importance Of Environmentally-Friendly Lifestyle Changes During The Transitional College Years, Jessica E. Clark

Honors Projects in Science and Technology

This paper aims to explain and justify my choice of film as the medium employed to persuade my audience of the need for environmentally-friendly lifestyle changes to be made by individuals. In order to effectively stimulate action by college students, the target audience, film was used to communicate the necessity of developing green habits. During these years students in higher education develop intellectually and mature into adults. It is a prime time to learn simple green lifestyle changes and translate them into their daily behavioral repertoire. To begin my project I researched current information about the state of our environment, …

A Green Endeavor; The Role Of Bryant University’S Faculty On An Environmentally Responsible Campus, Justine M. Boucher Apr 2009

A Green Endeavor; The Role Of Bryant University’S Faculty On An Environmentally Responsible Campus, Justine M. Boucher

Honors Projects in Science and Technology

This thesis researches and analyzes Bryant University faculty practices and motivations with regards to consumption and recycling paper. The project incorporated survey instrumentation to gather quantitative data on which to base conclusions. In addition, paper usage was directly observed, along with analysis of faculty feedback to an online survey. A marketing campaign addressed faculty practices and encouraged faculty reduction of paper. Results show that paper recycling in the targeted faculty suite increased slightly in the short-term following the marketing campaign, either through heightened awareness or seasonal office disposal; however, measurement over a greater span of time with sustained marketing might …

A Collection Of Micrographs: Where Science And Art Meet, Vuk Uskoković Jan 2009

A Collection Of Micrographs: Where Science And Art Meet, Vuk Uskoković

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

Micrographs obtained using different instrumental techniques are presented with the purpose of demonstrating their artistic qualities. The quality of uniformity currently dominates the aesthetic assessment in scientific practice and is discussed in relation to the classical appreciation of the interplay between symmetry and asymmetry in arts. It is argued that scientific and artistic qualities have converged and inspired each other throughout millennia. With scientific discoveries and inventions enriching the world of communication, broadening the space for artistic creativity and making artistic products more accessible than ever, science inevitably influences artistic creativity. On the other hand, the importance of aesthetic principles …
