Size And Properties Of The Narrow-Line Region In Seyfert-1 Galaxies From Spatially-Resolved Optical Spectroscopy, N. Bennert, B. Jungwiert, S. Komossa, M. Hass, R. Chini

Physics

Context.Spatially resolved emission-line spectroscopy is a powerful tool for determining the physical conditions in the narrow-line region (NLR) of active galactic nuclei (AGNs). We recently used optical long-slit spectroscopy to study the NLRs of a sample of six Seyfert-2 galaxies. We have shown that such an approach, in comparison to the commonly used [ ] narrow-band imaging alone, allows us to probe the size of the NLR in terms of AGN photoionisation. Moreover, several physical parameters of the NLR can be directly accessed. Aims.We here apply the same methods to study the NLR of six Seyfert-1 galaxies and …

Size And Properties Of The Narrow-Line Region In Seyfert-2 Galaxies From Spatially-Resolved Optical Spectroscopy, N. Bennert, B. Jungwiert, S. Komossa, M. Haas, R. Chini

Physics

Context. While [O III] narrow-band imaging is commonly used to measure the size of the narrow-line regions (NLRs) in active galactic nuclei (AGNs), it can be contaminated by emission from surrounding starbursts. Recently, we have shown that long-slit spectroscopy provides a valuable alternative approach to probe the size in terms of AGN photoionisation. Moreover, several parameters of the NLR can be directly accessed. Aims. We here apply the same methods developed and described for the Seyfert-2 galaxy NGC 1386 to study the NLR of five other Seyfert-2 galaxies by using high-sensitivity spatially-resolved optical spectroscopy obtained at the VLT and the …

Physics

CUORE is a 0.75 ton experiment to search for neutrinoless double beta decay of Te130 using 988 TeO2 bolometers. It aims at reaching a sensitivity on the effective neutrino mass of the order of few tens of meV. CUORICINO, a single CUORE tower running since 2003, plays an important role as a stand alone experiment and for developing the future CUORE setup. Present results already achieved and studies that are underway are here presented and discussed.

Illustrating Physics With Ray-Traced Computer Graphics, Thomas J. Bensky

Physics

This paper provides a brief introduction to using ray-traced computer graphics for creating illustrations to be used in physics teaching. The article focuses on Povray, a freely available ray-tracing software program. We have found that a ray-traced illustration produced with this software provides a final-image quality that is far superior to hand-drawn illustrations and those produced using standard click-and-draw computer drawing software. Techniques for illustrating time-dependent scenarios are discussed as well.

Modes Of Biomineralization Of Magnetite By Microbes, Dennis A. Bazylinski, Richard B. Frankel, Kurt O. Konhauser Sep 2006

Modes Of Biomineralization Of Magnetite By Microbes, Dennis A. Bazylinski, Richard B. Frankel, Kurt O. Konhauser

Physics

Biomineralization processes have traditionally been grouped into two distinct modes; biologically induced mineralization (BIM) and biologically controlled mineralization (BCM). In BIM, microbes cause mineral formation by sorbing solutes onto their cell surfaces or extruded organic polymers and/or releasing reactive metabolites which alter the saturation state of the solution proximal to the cell or polymer surface. Such mineral products appear to have no specific recognized functions. On the other hand, in BCM microbes exert a great degree of chemical and genetic control over the nucleation and growth of mineral particles, presumably because the biominerals produced serve some physiological function. Interestingly, there …

Crystal Habits And Magnetic Microstructures Of Magnetosomes In Coccoid Magnetotactic Bacteria, Ulysses Lins, Martha R. Mccartney, Marcos Farina, Richard B. Frankel, Peter R. Buseck

Physics

We report on the application of off-axis electron holography and high-resolution TEM to study the crystal habits of magnetosomes and magnetic microstructure in two coccoid morphotypes of magnetotactic bacteria collected from a brackish lagoon at Itaipu, Brazil. Itaipu-1, the larger coccoid organism, contains two separated chains of unusually large magnetosomes; the magnetosome crystals have roughly square projections, lengths up to 250 nm and are slightly elongated along [111] (width/length ~ 0.9). Itaipu-3 magnetosome crystals have lengths up to 120 nm, greater elongation along [111] (width/length approximately 0.6), and prominent corner facets. The results show that Itaipu-1 and Itaipu-3 magnetosome crystal …

We report measurements of transverse momentum pt spectra for ten event multiplicity classes of p−pcollisions at √s=200  GeV. By analyzing the multiplicity dependence we find that the spectrum shape can be decomposed into a part with amplitude proportional to multiplicity and described by a Lévy distribution on transverse mass mt, and a part with amplitude proportional to multiplicity squared and described by a Gaussian distribution on transverse rapidity yt. The functional forms of the two parts are nearly independent of event multiplicity. The two parts can be identified with the soft and hard components of a two-component model …

Additional Algorithms For Sensor Chip Alignment To Blind Datums, Gary B. Hughes

Statistics

Alignment of the sensor focal plane array (FPA) to optical components is a critical design feature. Imaging system designs include reference datums that provide the basis for manufacturing alignment in each sub-assembly. Measurement of z and parallelism positioning can be problematic, since the relevant datum features are often beneath the mounting platform and are obscured to the measurement system. General algorithms for determining sensor chip alignment when datum features are inaccessible to the measurement system have been developed. Pre-characterization measurements of datum surfaces are stored for later use during alignment measurement to determine datum locations. The algorithms are useful for …

Pre-Conference Proceedings Of The Focus Symposium On Advances In Intelligent Software Systems, Collaborative Agent Design Research Center

Collaborative Agent Design (CAD) Research Center

A very powerful new type of information systems technology is rapidly emerging, driven by government and commercial needs for expert decision-support and knowledge management. One very apparent result of this technology is increasingly intelligent software systems. Computer programs with collaborative agents that are capable of automatically reasoning about data and the dynamic changes in data that occur in real world decision-making situations are already in use by the military and are now transitioning to the commercial world.

Tabu Search For Optimization Of Military Supply Distribution, Ben Weber, Brett Bojduj, Jens G. Pohl

Collaborative Agent Design (CAD) Research Center

The dynamic and non-hierarchical nature of the military domain presents a challenge for traditional supply chain optimization. Flow networks and simulation techniques have been applied to the military distribution problem, but are unable to provide time-definite delivery to customers. Recently, optimization approaches have been independently applied towards strategic and operational levels of planning. However, decomposing military distribution into separate problems forces optimization techniques to utilize imprecise data. The size of the military distribution problem has prevented optimization techniques from providing end-to-end planning capabilities. This paper presents a Tabu Search algorithm for simultaneously solving strategic and operational levels of planning. The …

Elements Of Human Decision-Making, Jens G. Pohl

Collaborative Agent Design (CAD) Research Center

The purpose of this paper is to present some understandings of the human problem-solving activity that we have gained in the Collaborative Agent Design Research Center (CADRC) over the past two decades. Since we feel strongly that the human decision-maker should be an integral component of any computer-based decision-support system, it follows that we would have endeavored to incorporate many of the elements that appear to be important to the user in the design of these systems. The complexity of the human cognitive system is evidenced by the large body of literature that describes problem-solving behavior and the relatively fewer …

Transway®: Planning With The Tabu Search Algorithm, Joshua Nibecker, Dennis Taylor, Robert Chambers, Harmony Larsen, Ken Cudworth, Clay Warren, Mark Porczak, Jens G. Pohl

Collaborative Agent Design (CAD) Research Center

Military deployment and distribution responsibilities call for intelligent collaborative tools in support of strategic and operational planning functions involving the sustainment and movement of military forces. The sustainment requirement is generated at the operational level and is dynamic. It is composed of shifting priorities responding to changes in commander’s intent and changes in the operational situation.

The TRANSWAY software application is designed as a set of intelligent collaborative tools supporting operators performing planning and re-planning tasks in a dynamically changing decision-making environment. TRANSWAY includes several agents with strategic and operational planning and re-planning capabilities. The principal agent is based on …

How Magnetotactic Bacteria Make Magnetosomes Queue Up, Richard B. Frankel, Dennis A. Bazylinski

Physics

Magnetotactic bacteria contain chains of magnetosomes that comprise a permanent magnetic dipole in each cell. In two separate, recent papers, Scheffel et al. and Komeili et al. describe the roles of the proteins MamJ and MamK in magnetosome chain formation. Here, we describe the two studies and highlight questions that must be addressed in future investigations of how magnetotactic bacteria construct their magnetic compass needles.

The Radio Structure Of Radio-Quiet Quasars, C. Leipski, H. Falcke, N. Bennert, S. Hüttenmeister

Physics

Aims. We investigate the radio emitting structures of radio-quiet active galactic nuclei with an emphasis on radio-quiet quasars to study their connection to Seyfert galaxies. Methods. We present and analyse high-sensitivity VLA radio continuum images of 14 radio-quiet quasars and six Seyfert galaxies. Results. Many of the low redshift radio-quiet quasars show radio structures that can be interpreted as jet-like outflows. However, the detection rate of extended radio structures on arcsecond scales among our sample decreases with increasing redshift and luminosity, most likely due to a lack of resolution. The morphologies of the detected radio emission indicate strong interactions of …

A Genetic Algorithm Approach To Solve For Multiple Solutions Of Inverse Kinematics Using Adaptive Niching And Clustering, Saleh Tabandeh, Christopher M. Clark, William Melek

Computer Science and Software Engineering

Inverse kinematics is a nonlinear problem that may have multiple solutions. A Genetic Algorithm(GA) for solving the inverse kinematics of a serial robotic manipulator is presented. The algorithm is capable of finding multiple solutions of the inverse kinematics through niching methods. Despite the fact that the number and position of solutions in the search space depends on the the position and orientation of the end-effector as well as the configuration of the robot, the number of GA parameters that must be set by a user are limited to a minimum through the use of an adaptive niching method. The only …

The sensor element of an imaging system should be mounted into its housing in such a way that the scene can be properly focused onto the sensor element's focal plane over the active area. Operational imaging requirements are forcing increasingly smaller tolerances on sensor alignment, and manufacturing systems must improve alignment capability to keep pace. Imaging system designs include reference datums that provide the basis for manufacturing alignment of optical components in each subassembly. Design constraints for alignment of the sensor element into the camera housing typically include x,y,z, clocking, and parallelism specifications. Measurement of z and parallelism positioning is …

Ricci Curvature Rigidity For Weakly Asymptotically Hyperbolic Manifolds, Vincent Bonini, Pengzi Miao, Jie Qing Jul 2006

Ricci Curvature Rigidity For Weakly Asymptotically Hyperbolic Manifolds, Vincent Bonini, Pengzi Miao, Jie Qing

Mathematics

A rigidity result for weakly asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds with lower bounds on Ricci curvature is proved without assuming that the manifolds are spin. The argument makes use of a quasilocal mass characterization of Euclidean balls from [9] [14] and eigenfunction compactification ideas from [12].

Computer Science and Software Engineering

The software suite we will demonstrate at AAAI ’06 was designed around planning with factored Markov decision processes (MDPs). It is a user-friendly suite that facilitates domain elicitation, preference elicitation, planning, and MDP policy display. The demo will concentrate on user interactions for domain experts and those for whom plans are made.

When Domains Require Modeling Adaptations, Krol Kevin Mathias, Cynthia Isenhour, Alex Dekhtyar, Judy Goldsmtih, Beth Goldstein

Computer Science and Software Engineering

The project described in this paper originated with an observation by the AI group at the University of Kentucky, that, individually, stochastic planning and constraint satisfaction are well-studied topics that resulted in efficient software, but stochastic planning in the presence of constraints on the domains and actions is an open area of investigation.

We were interested in an advising scenario, and chose the US social welfare system, a.k.a. “Welfare to Work” as our test domain. This required computer scientists to learn more than expected about social science as well as the local welfare system. This paper discusses the discipline specific …

After an introduction on the various experimental techniques to be adopted in searches for double beta decay, the new approach based on the use of cryogenic low temperature detectors is described. The present results are reported on the limit for neutrinoless double beta decay of n130Te obtained with the large bolometric detector CUORICINO. This setup consists of 44 cubic crystals of natural TeOn2 with 5 cm sides and 18 crystals of 3 × 3 × 6 cmn3. Four of these latter crystals are made with isotopically enriched materials: two in n128Te and two …

Measurements of two-particle correlations on angular difference variables η1−η2 (pseudorapidity) and ϕ1−ϕ2 (azimuth) are presented for all primary charged hadrons with transverse momentum 0.15≤pt≤2 GeV/c and |η|≤1.3 from Au-Au collisions at √sNN=130 GeV. Large-amplitude correlations are observed over a broad range in relative angles where distinct structures appear on the same-side and away-side (i.e., relative azimuth less than π/2 or greater than π/2). The principal correlation structures include that associated with elliptic flow plus a strong, same-side peak. It is hypothesized that the latter results from correlated hadrons associated with semi-hard parton scattering in the early stage of the heavy-ion …

Geotorrent: Optimizing Gis Web Services For Interactive Educational Use, Jeffrey A. Bergamini, Michael Haungs

Computer Science and Software Engineering

Large online geospatial datasets for use with GIS are increasingly available and have many uses, including study in numerous academic and scientific fields. Access to this data in real time for pedagogical purposes would be immensely useful to educators. The academic lab environment presents unique requirements for data access: Its exploratory, multiplicative, and connective nature provides challenges and opportunities that have gone unexplored. Currently, these challenges make interactive educational use impractical. Also, student training requirements have been a noted problem. We present “GeoTorrent”, a system that enables such use for K-20 educational institutions. GeoTorrent provides a client-side proxy server that …

We present the transverse momentum (pT) spectra for identified charged pions, protons and anti-protons from p+p and d+Au collisions at . The spectra are measured around midrapidity (|y|/c with particle identification from the ionization energy loss and its relativistic rise in the time projection chamber and time-of-flight in STAR. The charged pion and proton + anti-proton spectra at high pT in p+p and d+Au collisions are in good agreement with a phenomenological model (EPOS) and with next-to-leading order perturbative quantum chromodynamic (NLO pQCD) calculations with a specific fragmentation scheme and factorization scale. We found that all proton, …

Autonomous Fish Tracking By Rov Using Monocular Camera, Jun Zhou, Christopher M. Clark Jun 2006

Autonomous Fish Tracking By Rov Using Monocular Camera, Jun Zhou, Christopher M. Clark

Computer Science and Software Engineering

This paper concerns the autonomous tracking of fish using a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) equipped with a single camera. An efficient image processing algorithm is presented that enables pose estimation of a particular species of fish - a Large Mouth Bass. The algorithm uses a series of filters including the Gabor filter for texture, projection segmentation, and geometrical shape feature extraction to find the fishes distinctive dark lines that mark the body and tail. Feature based scaling then produces the position and orientation of the fish relative to the ROV. By implementing this algorithm on each frame of a series …

Multihierarchical Xquery For Document-Centric Xml, Ionut E. Iacob, Alex Dekhtyar

Computer Science and Software Engineering

Text has a non-hierarchical structure. Not surprisingly, searching for information in the content of a document often yields results that overlap the structure within the document. It is often of a great interest to relate such results to the embedded document structure. In this work we present an extension of the XQuery language over multihierarchical document-centric XML documents. We illustrate the benefits of using multihierarchical XQuery for text-and-structure searches in document-centric XML documents More specifically, multihierarchical XQuery allows representing relationships between textsearch results and document structure even for cases wheresuch search results overlap markup boundaries and even incases when only …

Structured Queries For Semistructured Probabilistic Data, Alex Dekhtyar, Krol Kevin Mathias, Praveen Gutti

Computer Science and Software Engineering

We present SPOQL, a structured query language for Semistructured Probabilistic Object (SPO) model [4]. The original querylanguage—SP-Algebra [4], has traditional limitations like terse functional notation and unfamiliarity to application programmers. SPOQL alleviates these problems by providing familiar SQL-like declarative syntax. We show that parsing SPOQL queries is a more involving task than parsing SQL queries. We also present an eagerevaluation algorithm for SPOQL queries
