Temporal Variation In Community Composition, Pigmentation, And Fv/Fm Of Desert Cyanobacterial Soil Crusts, M. A. Bowker, S. C. Reed, J. Belnap, S. L. Phillips
Canyonlands Research Bibliography
Summers on the Colorado Plateau (USA) are typified by harsh conditions such as high temperatures, brief soil hydration periods, and high UV and visible radiation. We investigated whether community composition, physiological status, and pigmentation might vary in biological soil crusts as a result of such conditions. Representative surface cores were sampled at the ENE, WSW, and top microaspects of 20 individual soil crust pedicels at a single site in Canyonlands National Park, Utah, in spring and fall of 1999. Frequency of cyanobacterial taxa, pigment concentrations, and dark adapted quantum yield (Fv/Fm) were measured for each core. The frequency of major …

Safeguarding Species, Languages, And Cultures In The Time Of Diversity Loss: From The Colorado Plateau To Global Hotspots, Gary Paul Nabhan, Patrick Pynes, Tony Joe
Canyonlands Research Bibliography
Hotspots of biodiversity have become priority areas for land conservation initiatives, oftentimes without recognition that these areas are hotspots of cultural diversity as well. Using the Colorado Plateau ecoregion as a case study, this inquiry (1) outlines the broad geographic patterns of biological diversity and ethnolinguistic diversity within this ecoregion; (2) discusses why these two kinds of diversity are often influenced by the same geographic and historic factors; and (3) suggests what can be done to integrate traditional ecological knowledge of indigenous peoples into multicultural conservation collaborations.
A Dynamic Simulation Model Of Beach Sand Replenishment: A Case Study Of Santa Barbara, California, David Turbow, Steve Norwick, Sajjad Ahmad
A Dynamic Simulation Model Of Beach Sand Replenishment: A Case Study Of Santa Barbara, California, David Turbow, Steve Norwick, Sajjad Ahmad
Civil and Environmental Engineering and Construction Faculty Research
Sediment deprivation from dam installments contributes to beach erosion yet the underlying physical and economic factors linking them together have traditionally been isolated during regional planning. In order to gain a better understanding of the behavior of a managed beach system, a dynamic simulation model was developed incorporating physical and monetary factors influencing the amount of available beach sand. The Santa Barbara littoral cell was chosen as a case study to evaluate the feasibility of beach preservation goals under scenarios in which annual sand replenishment funding, sand prices, or sediment recovery from behind dams were limiting factors to available beach …
Exploring Visitor Experiences On Going-To-The-Sun Road In Glacier National Park, Robert N. Giordano
Exploring Visitor Experiences On Going-To-The-Sun Road In Glacier National Park, Robert N. Giordano
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Going-to-the-Sun Road (GTSR) is one of the premier road facilities in the world. As the only cross-mountain route through Glacier National Park, the road brings nearly two million visitors a year into the heart of Montana wilderness. How to meet this demand for travel while protecting the nature of the visitor experience and the pristine setting for which the experience exists is a challenge of on-going complexity.
This research was designed to assist park managers in determining future changes to GTSR by describing and analyzing the experiences on the road today. Through 40 onsite interviews at Logan Pass (the pinnacle …
Brownfields One-Stop Shop Forum: A Test Strategy For Inter-Agency Cooperation In Northeast Ohio, Kevin O'Brien, Kirstin S. Toth
Brownfields One-Stop Shop Forum: A Test Strategy For Inter-Agency Cooperation In Northeast Ohio, Kevin O'Brien, Kirstin S. Toth
All Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs Publications
The Brownfields One Stop Shop (BOSS) is the culmination of a process created over a year ago that brought together several federal and local public agencies to address the complexities of applying resources to support brownfields redevelopment. The idea was originally developed by the United States Environmental Protection Agency’s Region 5 brownfields Project Manager, Edwin Smith, and by the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Cleveland Office Community Builder, Paul Diegelman. Together, they developed an initial concept for a collaborative introductory meeting, and presented the idea to the Cleveland Federal Executive Board members. The project was accepted as …

Effects Of Habitat Fragmentation On The Utilization Of Eelgrass (Zostera Marina) By Mobile Epifauna And Macrofauna, Scott R. Marion
Effects Of Habitat Fragmentation On The Utilization Of Eelgrass (Zostera Marina) By Mobile Epifauna And Macrofauna, Scott R. Marion
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
The threat to biodiversity posed by increasing rates of anthropogenic habitat fragmentation necessitates an understanding of the consequences of spatial pattern for natural communities. Reduction of patch size, loss of habitat, changes in the quantity and proportion of habitat edge, and reduced connectivity among habitats can all shape ecological processes and faunal behavior. Seagrass habitats provide a natural model system for examining spatial inf1uences on marine fauna, but separating the effects of habitat structure, environmental conditions, and spatial pattern is difficult because shoot density, percent cover, and hydrodynamic regime often co-vary with patch size. This study used experimentally manipulated seagrass …
Virginia Game Fish Tagging Program Annual Report 2001, John A. Lucy, C.M. Bain Iii
Virginia Game Fish Tagging Program Annual Report 2001, John A. Lucy, C.M. Bain Iii
Reports
The Virginia Game Fish Tagging Program (VGFTP), in its seventh year during 2001, systematically trains and assists anglers in tagging a select number of species important to Virginia's marine recreational fishery and maintains the resulting tagging database. A cooperative project of the Virginia Marine Resources Commission and the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS), the program is primarily funded with revenues from Virginia's saltwater recreational fishing license funds (Recreational Fishing Development Fund). In addition, support for the program is provided by Virginia's Sea Grant Marine Advisory Program at VIMS.
Call Parameters And Facial Features In Bats: A Surprising Failure Of Form Following Function, Amanda Goudy-Trainor, Patricia W. Freeman
Call Parameters And Facial Features In Bats: A Surprising Failure Of Form Following Function, Amanda Goudy-Trainor, Patricia W. Freeman
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
We attempted to correlate echolocation call parameters to a comprehensive array of ear and nose measurements from 12 families of bats. Surprisingly, we failed to find any significant relationships. We did find consistent differences between nasal and oral emitters such as: (a) nasal emitters have higher frequencies with maximum energy for their size than oral emitters, (b) nasal emitting bats tend to have longer, narrower skulls, and (c) nasal emitters have a shorter distance from the nostril to the eye (muzzle length).
River Basin Ecosystem Restoration: A Comparison Of Conservation Authority Efforts (Ontario), Wilfred Gregory Tschirhart
River Basin Ecosystem Restoration: A Comparison Of Conservation Authority Efforts (Ontario), Wilfred Gregory Tschirhart
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
This thesis reviews a series of river basin ecosystem restoration/enhancement projects carried out under the direction of three individual southern Ontario conservation authorities in their respective river basins. The three authorities are the Grand River Conservation Authority, the Maitland Valley Conservation Authority, and the Upper Thames River Conservation Authority. A review from the published literature dealing with river basins, ecosystems, and environmental management supports the analysis of restoration projects. The criterion by which the literature articles were selected was that they have relevance to the type of environmental issues that are common to the river basins in the study areas. …
Ecosystem Health And Sustainable Livelihoods: Exploring The Prospects In Community-Based Resource Management In The East Mamprusi District, Ghana, Wuni P. Dasori
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Institutional processes, social and economic trends play a role in defining the outcomes of people’s interaction with and use of their ecosystems. The resource use decisions of households influence the livelihood and health dimensions of ecological change. This thesis identifies community assets and activities, and examines how they both affect human and ecological health, productivity and community sustainability. It studies the relationship between changing biophysical conditions and community well-being in terms of health and livelihood by examining how agro-ecosystem based resource use systems influence community environmental change and vulnerability to health and livelihood problems inherent in their ecosystem. Three communities …
Handbook On Fence Viewers And Laws On Fences In The Commonwealth Of Massachusetts, Joseph Larson
Handbook On Fence Viewers And Laws On Fences In The Commonwealth Of Massachusetts, Joseph Larson
Joseph S. Larson
This handbook is intended to serve as an informal guide to the laws that pertain to Fence Viewers and fencing in general in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. We have used two primary sources for the current Massachusetts laws. We first searched the unofficial on-line text of the Massachusetts General Laws provided on the Internet (http://www.state.ma.us/legis/laws/mgl/) by the State Senate. This was followed by an examination of the laws, court decisions and notes as they appear in the most recent volumes and annual supplements of Massachusetts General Laws Annotated (1977). In every instance, the text describing each law consists only of …
