Novel Switching Phenomena In Ferroelectric Langmuir-Blodgett Films, A. Bune, Stephen Ducharme, V.M. Fridkin, L. Blinov, S. Palto, N. Petukhova, S. Yudin Dec 1995

Novel Switching Phenomena In Ferroelectric Langmuir-Blodgett Films, A. Bune, Stephen Ducharme, V.M. Fridkin, L. Blinov, S. Palto, N. Petukhova, S. Yudin

Stephen Ducharme Publications

We have established ferroelectric switching and observed a novel conductance switching phenomenon in ferroelectric polymer films fabricated by the Langmuir–Blodgett technique. The films consist of 10–30 monolayers (ML) of a copolymer of vinylidene fluoride (70%) and trifluoroethylene (30%), exhibiting a first-order ferroelectric phase transition at 70 °C and nearly rectangular ferroelectric and conductance hysteresis at 24 °C. Ferroelectric switching is accompanied by switching of the conductance by three orders of magnitude. A model describing this switching phenomenon is proposed.

Locally Optimally Emitting Clouds And The Origin Of Quasar Emission Lines, Jack Baldwin, Gary J. Ferland, Kirk Korista, Dima Verner Dec 1995

Locally Optimally Emitting Clouds And The Origin Of Quasar Emission Lines, Jack Baldwin, Gary J. Ferland, Kirk Korista, Dima Verner

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

The similarity of quasar line spectra has been taken as an indication that the emission line clouds have preferred parameters, suggesting that the environment is subject to a fine-tuning process. We show here that the observed spectrum is a natural consequence of powerful selection effects. We computed a large grid of photoionization models covering the widest possible range of cloud gas density and distance from the central continuum source. For each line only a narrow range of density and distance from the continuum source results in maximum reprocessing efficiency, corresponding to "locally optimally emitting clouds" (LOCs). These parameters depend on …

A Simple Model To Estimate Atmospheric Concentrations Of Aerosol Chemical Species Based On Snow Core Chemistry At Summit, Greenland, M H. Bergin, C Davidson, Jack E. Dibb, J L. Jaffrezo, H D. Kuhns, S N. Pandis

Earth Sciences

A simple model is presented to estimate atmospheric concentrations of chemical species that exist primarily as aerosols based on snow core/ice core chemistry at Summit, Greenland. The model considers the processes of snow, fog, and dry deposition. The deposition parameters for each of the processes are estimated for SO42− and Ca2+ and are based on experiments conducted during the 1993 and 1994 summer field seasons. The seasonal mean atmospheric concentrations are estimated based on the deposition parameters and snow cores obtained during the field seasons. The ratios of the estimated seasonal mean airborne concentration divided by the …

Computer Assistance In Discovering Formulas And Theorems In System Engineering, J. W. Helton, Mark Stankus Dec 1995

Computer Assistance In Discovering Formulas And Theorems In System Engineering, J. W. Helton, Mark Stankus

Mathematics

If one reads a typical article on A,B,C,D systems in the control transactions, one finds that most of the algebra involved is non commutative rather than commutative. Thus, for symbolic computing to have much impact on linear systems research, one needs a program which will do non-commuting operations. Mathematica, Macsyma and Maple do not. We have a package, NCAlgebra, which runs under Mathematica which does the basic operations, block matrix manipulations and other things. The package might be seen as a competitor to a yellow pad. Like Mathematica the emphasis is on interaction with the program and flexibility.

The issue …

Singular Vertices And The Triangulation Space Of The D-Sphere, Simon Catterall, G. Thorleifsson, John B. Kogut, R. Renken Dec 1995

Singular Vertices And The Triangulation Space Of The D-Sphere, Simon Catterall, G. Thorleifsson, John B. Kogut, R. Renken

Physics - All Scholarship

By a sequence of numerical experiments we demonstrate that generic triangulations of the D-sphere for D>3 contain one {\it singular} (D-3)-simplex. The mean number of elementary D-simplices sharing this simplex increases with the volume of the triangulation according to a simple power law. The lower dimension subsimplices associated with this (D-3)-simplex also show a singular behaviour. Possible consequences for the DT model of four-dimensional quantum gravity are discussed.

The Spinor Representation Of Minimal Surfaces, Rob Kusner, Nick Schmitt Dec 1995

The Spinor Representation Of Minimal Surfaces, Rob Kusner, Nick Schmitt

Mathematics and Statistics Department Faculty Publication Series

The spinor representation is developed and used to investigate minimal surfaces in R^3 with embedded planar ends. The moduli spaces of planar-ended minimal spheres and real projective planes are determined, and new families of minimal tori and Klein bottles are given. These surfaces compactify in S^3 to yield surfaces critical for the M¨obius invariant squared mean curvature functional W. On the other hand, all Wcritical spheres and real projective planes arise this way. Thus we determine at the same time the moduli spaces of W-critical spheres and real projective planes via the spinor representation.

Broad Ne Viii Λ744 Emission From The Quasar Pg 1148+549, Fred Hamann, Joseph C. Shields, Gary J. Ferland, Kirk T. Korista

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

We discuss the probable detection of broad Ne VIII λ774 emission from the zɛ = 0.978 quasar PG 1148+549, and we use spectral synthesis calculations to study the physical conditions in the line-forming gas. The theoretical predictions and the measured line wavelength both support Ne VIII λ774 as the most likely identification.

Our calculations show that Ne VIII λ774 forms in hotter and more highly ionized gas than previously recognized in the broad emission line region. If the gas is photoionized by a standard active galactic nucleus continuum, the observed Ne VIII equivalent width, the Ne VIII/O VI flux …

The Anomalous Mössbauer Fraction Of Ferritin And Polysaccharide Iron Complex (Pic), M. E. Y. Mohie-Eldin, Richard B. Frankel, L. Gunther, G. C. Papaefthymiou

Physics

Mössbauer studies of the ubiquitous protein molecule ferritin and its synthetic "biomimic" polysaccharide iron complex (PIC) exhibit an anomaly in the Mössbauer spectrum wherein the recoil free fraction f-factor has a sharp drop with respect to temperature as the temperature rises above 30 K for mammalian ferritin and 60 K for PIC. The anomaly coincides with the disappearance of hyperfine splitting, which is due to superparamagnetic relaxation above the blocking temperature. Different absorbers were used to experimentally investigate the effect of absorber thickness on the Mössbauer spectrum. The anomaly persists for thin absorbers. Also, spectra treated with FFT procedures …

Local Magnetic Properties Of Antiferromagnetic Febr2, J. Peloth, R. A. Brand, Takele Seda, M. M. Pereira De Azevedo, W. Kleeman, Ch. Binek, J. Kushauer, D. Bertrand Dec 1995

Local Magnetic Properties Of Antiferromagnetic Febr2, J. Peloth, R. A. Brand, Takele Seda, M. M. Pereira De Azevedo, W. Kleeman, Ch. Binek, J. Kushauer, D. Bertrand

Physics & Astronomy

The antiferromagnet FeBr2 has been studied by Mössbauer spectroscopy in external fields both in the metamagnetic region below the multicritical temperature TMCP and in the second-order transition region above. The local magnetization shows that the metamagnetic transition occurs by spin flips, as in simple models. However, in the second-order transition region, the local magnetization of the sublattice oriented antiparallel to the external field varies continuously but remains parallel to the c axis. This can only be understood if the external magnetic field induces strong transversal spin precession of the moments on the antiparallel sublattice. This shows that the …

Synthesis And Characterization Of A Water-Soluble Metallopeptide That Resembles A Parallel Beta-Pleated Sheet, Michael Y. Ogawa, Alexei B. Gretchikhine, Sunil-Datta Soni, Steven M. Davis Dec 1995

Synthesis And Characterization Of A Water-Soluble Metallopeptide That Resembles A Parallel Beta-Pleated Sheet, Michael Y. Ogawa, Alexei B. Gretchikhine, Sunil-Datta Soni, Steven M. Davis

Chemistry Faculty Publications

The title metallopeptide consists of two divalinyl peptides attached to the carboxylate groups of the ruthenium polypyridyl complex. [Ru(bpy)(2)L](2+): bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine; L = 3,5-dicarboxy-2,2'-bipyridine. The charged ruthenium complex is water soluble and is shown by variable temperature, and 2-D NMR to consist a parallel arrangement of interacting, extended peptide strands that ir reminiscent of the beta-sheet structure. Circular dichroism results support this assignment.

Simulations Between Programs As Cellular Automata, Howard A. Blair, Fred Dushin, Polar Humenn Dec 1995

Simulations Between Programs As Cellular Automata, Howard A. Blair, Fred Dushin, Polar Humenn

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - Technical Reports

We present cellular automata on appropriate digraphs and show that any covered normal logic program is a cellular automaton. Seeing programs as cellular automata shifts attention from classes of Herbrand models to orbits of Herbrand interpretations. Orbits capture both the declarative, model-theoretic meaning of programs as well as their inferential behavior. Logically and intentionally different programs can produce orbits that simulate each other. Simple examples of such behavior are compellingly exhibited with space-time diagrams of the programs as cellular automata. Construing a program as a cellular automaton leads to a general method for simulating any covered program with a Horn …

Designing Dependencies, Howard A. Blair Dec 1995

Designing Dependencies, Howard A. Blair

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - Technical Reports

Given a binary recursively enumerable relation R, one or more logic programs over a language L can be constructed and interconnected to produce a dependency relation D on selected predicates within the Herbrand base BL of L isomorphic to R. D can be, optionally, a positive, negative or mixed dependency relation. The construction is applied to representing any effective game of the type introduced by Gurevich and Harrington, which they used to prove Rabin's decision method for S2S, as the dependency relation of a logic program. We allow games over an infinite alphabet of possible moves. We use this representation …

Complex Dynamics And Multistability In A Damped Harmonic Oscillator With Delayed Negative Feedback, Sue Ann Campbell, Jacques Bélair, Toru Ohira, John Milton Dec 1995

Complex Dynamics And Multistability In A Damped Harmonic Oscillator With Delayed Negative Feedback, Sue Ann Campbell, Jacques Bélair, Toru Ohira, John Milton

WM Keck Science Faculty Papers

A center manifold reduction and numerical calculations are used to demonstrate the presence of limit cycles, two-tori, and multistability in the damped harmonic oscillator with delayed negative feedback. This model is the prototype of a mechanical system operating with delayed feedback. Complex dynamics are thus seen to arise in very plausible and commonly occurring mechanical and neuromechanical feedback systems.

Effect Of Disorder On Synchronization In Prototype 2-Dimensional Josephson Arrays, Adam S. Landsberg, Yuri Braiman, Kurt Wiesenfeld Dec 1995

Effect Of Disorder On Synchronization In Prototype 2-Dimensional Josephson Arrays, Adam S. Landsberg, Yuri Braiman, Kurt Wiesenfeld

WM Keck Science Faculty Papers

We study the effects of quenched disorder on the dynamics of two-dimensional arrays of overdamped Josephson junctions. Disorder in both the junction critical currents and resistances is considered. Analytical results for small arrays are used to identify a physical mechanism which promotes frequency locking across each row of the array, and to show that no such locking mechanism exists between rows. The intrarow locking mechanism is surprisingly strong, so that a row can tolerate large amounts of disorder before frequency locking is destroyed.

Secure Trapdoor Hash Functions Based On Public-Key Cryptosystems, Gary R. Greenfield, Sarah Agnes Spence Dec 1995

Secure Trapdoor Hash Functions Based On Public-Key Cryptosystems, Gary R. Greenfield, Sarah Agnes Spence

Department of Math & Statistics Technical Report Series

In this paper we systematically consider examples representative of the various families of public-key cryptosystems to see if it would be possible to incorporate them into trapdoor hash functions, and we attempt to evaluate the resulting strengths and weaknesses of the functions we are able to construct. We are motivated by the following question:

Question 1.2 How likely is it that the discoverer of a heretofore unknown public-key cryptosystem could subvert it for use in a plausible secure trapdoor hash algorithm?

In subsequent sections, our investigations will lead to a variety of constructions and bring to light the non-adaptability of …

An Automated Search For Variability In Chromospherically Active Stars, Gregory W. Henry, Francis C. Fekel, Douglas S. Hall

Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications

We have completed an automated photometric survey of 66 potential or known chromospherically active late-type stars with the 0.4 m Vanderbilt/Tennessee State robotic telescope. The precision of the observations from this telescope matches that predicted from photon and scintillation noise alone and represents a significant improvement in the precision of previous robotic telescope surveys of chromospherically active stars. Light variability has been detected and its period has been determined for 47 stars, 41 of which are newly discovered variables. The primary mechanism of variability is rotational modulation of a spotted surface. In addition we have detected eclipses in HD 62668 …
