The paper presents the results of an inventory of sources of air emissions from the city of Nowy Sacz (Poland) with regard to pollutant emissions from road transport, industrial processes, combustion plants and low-emissions from household furnaces. Particular attention has been devoted to assessing the impact of traffic on air quality in the city. Specified share of emissions from motor vehicles in the state of air pollution in the city center and its outskirts using the method of the atmospheric dispersion modeling.

We have established ferroelectric switching and observed a novel conductance switching phenomenon in ferroelectric polymer films fabricated by the Langmuir–Blodgett technique. The films consist of 10–30 monolayers (ML) of a copolymer of vinylidene fluoride (70%) and trifluoroethylene (30%), exhibiting a first-order ferroelectric phase transition at 70 °C and nearly rectangular ferroelectric and conductance hysteresis at 24 °C. Ferroelectric switching is accompanied by switching of the conductance by three orders of magnitude. A model describing this switching phenomenon is proposed.

Locally Optimally Emitting Clouds And The Origin Of Quasar Emission Lines, Jack Baldwin, Gary J. Ferland, Kirk Korista, Dima Verner

The similarity of quasar line spectra has been taken as an indication that the emission line clouds have preferred parameters, suggesting that the environment is subject to a fine-tuning process. We show here that the observed spectrum is a natural consequence of powerful selection effects. We computed a large grid of photoionization models covering the widest possible range of cloud gas density and distance from the central continuum source. For each line only a narrow range of density and distance from the continuum source results in maximum reprocessing efficiency, corresponding to "locally optimally emitting clouds" (LOCs). A simple model is presented to estimate atmospheric concentrations of chemical species that exist primarily as aerosols based on snow core/ice core chemistry at Summit, Greenland. The model considers the processes of snow, fog, and dry deposition. The deposition parameters for each of the processes are estimated for SO₄²⁻ and Ca²⁺ and are based on experiments conducted during the 1993 and 1994 summer field seasons. The seasonal mean atmospheric concentrations are estimated based on the deposition parameters and snow cores obtained during the field seasons. If one reads a typical article on A,B,C,D systems in the control transactions, one finds that most of the algebra involved is non commutative rather than commutative. Thus, for symbolic computing to have much impact on linear systems research, one needs a program which will do non-commuting operations. Mathematica, Macsyma and Maple do not. We have a package, NCAlgebra, which runs under Mathematica which does the basic operations, block matrix manipulations and other things. The package might be seen as a competitor to a yellow pad. Like Mathematica the emphasis is on interaction with the program and flexibility.

By a sequence of numerical experiments we demonstrate that generic triangulations of the D-sphere for D>3 contain one {\it singular} (D-3)-simplex. The mean number of elementary D-simplices sharing this simplex increases with the volume of the triangulation according to a simple power law. The lower dimension subsimplices associated with this (D-3)-simplex also show a singular behaviour. Possible consequences for the DT model of four-dimensional quantum gravity are discussed.

Nanoscale Oxide Patterns On Si (100) Surfaces, T. -C. Shen, C. Wang, J. W. Lyding, J. R. Tucker

Ultrathin oxide patterns of a linewidth of 50 Å have been created on Si(100)‐2×1 surfaces by a scanning tunneling microscope operating in ultrahigh vacuum. The oxide thickness is estimated to be 4–10 Å. The morphology and spectroscopy of the oxide region are obtained. Hydrogen passivation is used as an oxidation mask. The defects caused by oxidation in the passivated region before and after the hydrogen desorption are compared and discussed. The multistep silicon processings by an ultrahigh vacuum scanning tunneling micropscope is thus demonstrated.

The Spinor Representation Of Minimal Surfaces, Rob Kusner, Nick Schmitt

The spinor representation is developed and used to investigate minimal surfaces in R^3 with embedded planar ends. The moduli spaces of planar-ended minimal spheres and real projective planes are determined, and new families of minimal tori and Klein bottles are given. These surfaces compactify in S^3 to yield surfaces critical for the M¨obius invariant squared mean curvature functional W. On the other hand, all Wcritical spheres and real projective planes arise this way. Thus we determine at the same time the moduli spaces of W-critical spheres and real projective planes via the spinor representation.

We discuss the probable detection of broad Ne VIII λ774 emission from the z_ɛ = 0.978 quasar PG 1148+549, and we use spectral synthesis calculations to study the physical conditions in the line-forming gas. The theoretical predictions and the measured line wavelength both support Ne VIII λ774 as the most likely identification.

Our calculations show that Ne VIII λ774 forms in hotter and more highly ionized gas than previously recognized in the broad emission line region. If the gas is photoionized by a standard active galactic nucleus continuum, the observed Ne VIII equivalent width, the Ne VIII/O VI flux …

Mössbauer studies of the ubiquitous protein molecule ferritin and its synthetic "biomimic" polysaccharide iron complex (PIC) exhibit an anomaly in the Mössbauer spectrum wherein the recoil free fraction f-factor has a sharp drop with respect to temperature as the temperature rises above 30 K for mammalian ferritin and 60 K for PIC. The anomaly coincides with the disappearance of hyperfine splitting, which is due to superparamagnetic relaxation above the blocking temperature. Different absorbers were used to experimentally investigate the effect of absorber thickness on the Mössbauer spectrum. The anomaly persists for thin absorbers. Over a two year period, Western Michigan University ran a number of pump tests in the Asylum Lake Area in Kalamazoo, Michigan. The transmissivities and storativities calculated from these tests differed significantly from well to well in any particular test, and from pump test to pump test. Utilizing the computer programs AQTESOLV 3.0 and Aquifer Parameter Estimator, a number of T and S values were calculated. After analysis of the results, the following conclusion was drawn. Community intervention evaluations that measure changes over time may conduct repeated cross-sectional surveys, follow a cohort of residents over time, or (often) use both designs. Each survey design has implications for precision and cost. To explore these issues, we assume that two waves of surveys are conducted, and that the goal is to estimate change in behavior for people who reside in the community at both times. Cohort designs are shown to provide more accurate estimates (in the sense of lower mean squared error) than cross-sectional estimates if (1) there is strong correlation over time in an individual's behavior at …
