Vertical Variation In Groundwater Chemistry Inferred From Fluid Specific-Conductance Well Logging Of The Snake River Plain Basalt Aquifer, Idaho National Engineering Laboratory, Southeastern Idaho, Spencer H. Wood, William Bennecke
Geosciences Faculty Publications and Presentations
Well logging of electrical fluid specific conductance (Cs) shows that permeable zones yielding ground water to intrawell flows and the water columns in some wells at INEL have highly different chemistry, with as much as a two-fold variation in Cs). This suggests that dedicated pump sampling of ground water in the aquifer may not be representative of the chemistry of the waste plumes migrating southwest of the nuclear facilities. Natural background Cs in basalt-aquifer ground water of this part of the Snake River Plain aquifer is less than 325µS/cm (microSiemans/cm), and total dissolved solids in …
Fossil Charcoal In Cretaceous-Tertiary Boundary Strata: Evidence For Catastrophic Firestorm And Megawave, Michael A. Kruge
Fossil Charcoal In Cretaceous-Tertiary Boundary Strata: Evidence For Catastrophic Firestorm And Megawave, Michael A. Kruge
Department of Earth and Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Organic matter separated from calcareous sandstone from the upper portion of a deep-water tsunami deposit at Arroyo el Mimbral, Taumalipas (Mexico), which marks the biostratigraphically-defined Cretaceous-Tertiary boundary, consists primarily of fossil charcoal, including semifusinite and pyrofusinite. Analytical pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry revealed the highly aromatic and polyaromatic character of the organic matter assemblage, typical of the products of partial combustion. The organic matter probably originated as terrestrial vegetation that was caught in a firestorm and subsequently transported far offshore in the backwash of a megawave. These data are consistent with the hypothesis of combustion of large masses of vegetation triggered by …

Geochemical Characterization Of Maceral Concentrates From Herrin No. 6 Coal (Illinois Basin) And Lower Toarcian Shale Kerogen (Paris Basin), B Artur Stankiewicz, Michael A. Kruge, John C. Crelling
Department of Earth and Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Density gradient centrifugation (DGC) is a physical method for the separation of sedimentary organic matter into its constituents. Using DGC, it is possible to prepare maceral concentrates from a single sample, which are amenable to microanalysis. DGC fractions from a coal sample from the Illinois Basin (Herrin No. 6, Upper Carboniferous) and from the kerogen of a marine shale sample from the Paris Basin (Lower Toarcian) were analyzed by flash pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, after extraction by CH2Cl2.
Chemical differences between the coal DGC fractions are the easiest to recognize, indicating very distinctive biological precursors. For example, …

Flash Pyrolysis-Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry Of Lower Kittanning Vitrinites: Changes In The Distributions Of Polyaromatic Hydrocarbons As A Function Of Coal Rank, Michael A. Kruge, David F. Bensley
Department of Earth and Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Chemical analyses restricted to a single coal maceral permit a focus on rank effects without concern for variations in organic matter type. Vitrinite concentrates of high purity were isolated from coal samples of the Lower Kittanning seam by multi-step density gradient centrifugation, with reflectances ranging from 0.66 to 1.39% Rmax. In addition to the previously recognized losses of phenolic compounds, the vitrinite pyrolyzates exhibit marked increases in relative concentrations of tri- and tetraaromatic hydrocarbons (especially benzo[a]fluorene, methyl-phenanthrenes, methylfluorenes and methylchrysenes) above 0.9% Rmax, i.e., beyond the "second coalification jump" of Teichmüller. Thus, petrographically-recognizable physical transformations are shown …

Serravallian Shales In The Monte Dei Corvi Pelagic Sequence (Ancona, Italy): An Organic Geochemical Perspective, Michael A. Kruge, B Artur Stankiewicz, Alessandro Montanari
Department of Earth and Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
In addition to the predominant marly lithologies, the Serravallian-Tortonian sequence at Monte dei Corvi (MDC), south of Ancona, Italy, contains at least 85 thin, dark calcareous shales. Such shales, averaging 14 cm in thickness, comprise 9% of the total Serravallian sequence. Sixteen of them were sampled for a preliminary organic geochemical evaluation. All the MDC shales appear to have been deposited during periodic anoxic events, as demonstrated by the presence of significant quantities of organic matter and authigenic pyrite. The degree of anoxicity (and thus the amount of organic matter preserved) appears to have differed from one event to the …
Opportunities For Integration In Institutional Arrangements For Water Management In The Yukon, Patrick James Dooling
Opportunities For Integration In Institutional Arrangements For Water Management In The Yukon, Patrick James Dooling
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
The history of water resources management in the Yukon has been characterized by conflict. This problem is due to the failure to address the interrelationships between water and land resources. Although many parts of the Yukon remain largely undisturbed wilderness areas, development pressures place increasing demands on Territorial water resources. To ensure these stresses do not degrade Yukon waters to the extent common in many Canadian regions, a reevaluation of the legal and administrative arrangements for water management in the Yukon is required. A majority of the legislation pertaining to water management in the Yukon was introduced in the 1970s …

We have carried out molecular-dynamics simulations on BaXF4 compounds, where X is Mg, Mn, or Zn. Ab initio potentials, with no adjustable parameters, were used to obtain short-range interactions between ion pairs. We found a polar ground-state structure which is in agreement with the A21am space group reported experimentally. We were able to reverse polarization in BaMgF4 at high temperatures, using large fields, but were unable to reverse polarization in the other compounds. The second-order phase transition in the Mn compound at 250 K was reproduced. We believe this to be the first extension of …
Low Internal Magnetic Fields In Anisotropic Superconductors, Allan J. Greer Jr.
Low Internal Magnetic Fields In Anisotropic Superconductors, Allan J. Greer Jr.
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
This thesis is a theoretical, numerical study of the magnetic fields which exist in the anisotropic, high temperature superconductors like $YBa\sb2Cu\sb3O\sb{7-\delta}$, or YBCO for short, using both the anisotropic London theory and simulations based on existing muon spin rotation techniques. The thesis first describes the muon spin rotation ($\mu$SR) techniques, and then gives a brief discussion of superconductivity with regard to the London theory of anisotropic, type II superconductors. Next, numerical results of the application of this theory to YBCO are presented. Three dimensional surface plots of the magnetic field components within the flux line lattice (FLL) are shown, as …

The title compound 5-acetyltricyclo[8.2.2.24,7]hexa-deca-4,6,10,12,13,15-hexaene, C18H18O,is the first example of a mono-π-substituted [2.2]paracyclophane to be structurally characterized. The average bending angles are α = 13.2 and β = 9.9°. The distance between the 'bottoms' of the practically parallel boat-like benzene nuclei is 3.098(2) Å. The π conjugation between the acetyl group and the substituted benzene cycle is negligible (rotation angle ca 45°) because of steric hindrance.

The crystal structure of the 'non hydrogen-bonded' (according to IR data) polymorph of 1,7-bis(phenylcarbamoyl)-1,7-dicarba-closo-dodecaborane(12), C16-H22B10N2O2, has been determined. The two phenylamide groups have a Z configuration [the torsion angles 0-C-N-C are -2.3 (5) and -3.0 (5)°]. As a result both 'active' protons of these groups are almost completely shielded by other H atoms of the neighbouring carborane nucleus and phenyl substituents, and, therefore, no hydrogen-bonding contacts are found.
A Semantic Framework For Understanding The Behavior Of Modules And Classes In Programming Languages, Mahesh Dodani, Benjamin Kok Siew Gan
A Semantic Framework For Understanding The Behavior Of Modules And Classes In Programming Languages, Mahesh Dodani, Benjamin Kok Siew Gan
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Recent trends in programming language design and implementation are aimed at integrating the two most important constructs to combat complexity: modules and classes. Both constructs provide encapsulation, a cornerstone of reliable programming. These constructs differ in their approach to building hierarchies: modules define visibility of components while classes define visibility of functionality. How can modules and classes be effectively integrated within a simple programming language? This question captures the essence of developing semantics of these constructs to ensure that they interact in a meaningful way. This paper develops a formal denotational semantic framework for understanding the interaction between classes and …
A Thermoelastic Model Applied To Stress Control In Laser Heating Of Ceramics, Jeff Alexander Wagner
A Thermoelastic Model Applied To Stress Control In Laser Heating Of Ceramics, Jeff Alexander Wagner
Theses
Localized laser heating is widely used in materials processing. In extending these techniques to materials with relatively low thermal conductivities and ductilities such as ceramics and glasses, existing methods must be modified to control the high thermal stresses which are associated with the localized heating of these materials. Thermal profiles must be designed to minimize damage to regions adjacent to the processed area. To achieve this with single beam sources the power and radius can be varied in time, or the beam can be moved across the surface in a programmed pattern to achieve the desired thermal profile.

Precision Measurement Of The Ds*+-Ds+ Mass Difference, Brown, D.; Et Al., M. Thulasidas
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
We have measured the vector-pseudoscalar mass splitting M(D*+s)-M(D+s)=144.22±0.47±0.37 MeV significantly more precisely than the previous world average. We minimize the systematic errors by also measuring the vector-pseudoscalar mass difference M(D*0)-M(D0) using the radiative decay D*0→D0γ, obtaining [M(D*+s)-M(D+s)]-[M(D*0)-M(D0)] =2.09±0.47±0.37 MeV. This is then combined with our previous high-precision measurement of M(D*0)-M(D0), which used the decay D*0→D0π0. We also measure the mass difference M(D+s)-M(D+)=99.5±0.6±0.3 MeV, using the φπ+ decay modes of the D+s and D+ mesons.

Neural Network Diagnosis Of Malignant Melanoma From Color Images, Fikret Erçal, Hsi-Chieh Lee, William V. Stoecker, Randy Hays Moss, Anurag Chawla
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
Malignant melanoma is the deadliest form of all skin cancers. Approximately 32,000 new cases of malignant melanoma were diagnosed in 1991 in the United States, with approximately 80% of patients expected to survive 5 years. Fortunately, if detected early, even malignant melanoma may be treated successfully, Thus, in recent years, there has been rising interest in the automated detection and diagnosis of skin cancer, particularly malignant melanoma. Here, the authors present a novel neural network approach for the automated separation of melanoma from 3 benign categories of tumors which exhibit melanoma-like characteristics. The approach uses discriminant features, based on tumor …

A Fuzzy Logic-Based Foundation For Analyzing Imprecise Conflicting Requirements, J. Yen, Xiaoqing Frank Liu
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
Imprecise requirements are represented by the canonical form in test-score semantics. The concepts of feasibility, satisfiability, and specificity are formalized based on the fuzzy sets. The relationships between requirements are classified to be conflicting and cooperative. A feasible overall requirement can thus be formulated based on the tradeoff analysis of the conflicting requirements by using fuzzy multi-criteria optimization technique

Skin Cancer Diagnosis Using Hierarchical Neural Networks And Fuzzy Logic, Hsi-Chieh Lee
Masters Theses
"Skin cancer, the most common cancer in the United States that affects about 600,000 Americans every year, accounts for 1 % of all cancer deaths. Among all, Malignant Melanoma is the most virulent form of skin cancer that is responsible for 75% of all deaths from skin cancer. In 1992, approximately 32,000 people are expected to develop melanoma and about 6,700 will die. However, even malignant melanoma can be treated successfully if detected in the early phase. Therefore, our research goal is to diagnose skin cancer, especially malignant melanoma.
In this study, only the digitized images obtained from color tumor …

Direct Simulation Monte Carlo For Thin Film Bearings, Alejandro Garcia, B. Alder, F. J. Alexander
Alejandro Garcia
The direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) scheme is used to study the gas flow under a read/write head positioned nanometers above a moving disk drive platter (the slider bearing problem). In most cases, impressive agreement is found between the particle-based simulation and numerical solutions of the continuum hydrodynamic Reynolds equation which has been corrected for slip. However, at very high platter speeds the gas is far from equilibrium, and the load capacity for the slider bearing cannot be accurately computed from the hydrodynamic pressure.

Microscopic Simulation Of Dilute Gases With Adjustable Transport Coefficients, Alejandro Garcia, F. Baras, M. Malek Mansour

The Bird algorithm is a computationally efficient method for simulating dilute gas flows. However, due to the relatively large transport coefficients at low densities, high Rayleigh or Reynolds numbers are difficult to achieve by this technique. We present a modified version of the Bird algorithm in which the relaxation processes are enhanced and the transport coefficients reduced, while preserving the correct equilibrium and nonequilibrium fluid properties. The present algorithm is found to be two to three orders of magnitude faster than molecular dynamics for simulating complex hydrodynamical flows.

The conversion of mammalian prelamin A to mature lamin A proceeds through the removal of 18 amino acids from the carboxyl terminus. The initial step in this processing is the isoprenylation of a CAAX box cysteine. This proteolytic event is distinctive for prelamin A among the known prenylated mammalian proteins. Since the carboxyl terminus of prelamin A is removed during maturation, it is not obvious that this protein would undergo the two reactions subsequent to prenylation observed in other CAAX box proteins-the endoproteolytic removal of the carboxyl-terminal 3 amino acids and the subsequent methylation of the now carboxyl-terminal cysteine. Visualisation Of Inshore Marine Water Depth Data, Karen Powell
Theses : Honours
The literature review performed as part of this Project concentrated on two objectives. The first objective was the identification of techniques applicable to the visualisation of the inshore marine water depth data obtained from the Department of Marine & Harbours (M&H). The second objective involved examining how colour is best used within data visualisation. The experimentation investigated a simple method for interpreting movement between depth surveys undertaken by M&H. Although it achieved the objective of creating a longer and smoother animation, it was concluded that the movement of the harbour floor was not accurately represented. The Project applied an optical …
The Near-Shore, Soft-Substrate Bivalves Of The Swan Estuary: An Assessment Of Their Use As Biological Indicators, Graham Bailey
The Near-Shore, Soft-Substrate Bivalves Of The Swan Estuary: An Assessment Of Their Use As Biological Indicators, Graham Bailey
Theses : Honours
The soft-substrate bivalves of the Swan Estuary were evaluated for their suitability as biological indicators. The major requirement of a biological indicator is that a response to changing conditions can be shown. Demonstrating that bivalve community and populations respond to changing environmental conditions within The Estuary would fulfill this criteria. To make this assessment the study conducted a quantitative sampling program which established the current structure of the near-shore soft-substrate bivalve community and this was compared with the community established in 1973-74. To evaluate the predictive potential of bivalve structure as an indicator, major environmental conditions in the Estuary were …

Application Of Time Series Models To Sets Of Environmental Data, Saarah Ahmed Farag
Theses : Honours
In environmental studies, many programs have been implemented for the purpose of examining the influence of factors on the natural environment from various sources. In the past, predictions have been obtained from a simple regression model of the data from these programs to aid in deciding whether an intervention is required in the program or policy. However, most environmental time series involve correlated dependent variables which makes it difficult to apply conventional regression analysis. This thesis compares the application of the class of transfer function models, where high correlation between dependent variables is allowed, to that of conventional regression analysis. …
