Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

Boron has been detected on Mars [Gasda et al., 2017, Das et al., 2019, 2020] within calciumsulfate veins found within clay-rich rocks on Mars by the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) rover using Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) analysis. Boron plays a vital role in stabilizing ribose on Earth and has been suggested as a key requirement for life [Scorei et al., 2006, 2012; Furukawa et al., 2013, 2017; Becker et al., 2019]. Additionally, boron readily adsorbs to phyllosilicate clay minerals and is often associated with biologic processes in clay soils. The discovery of boron on Mars in proximity to phyllosilicate …

Nonwovens Of Ceramic Decorated Cellulose Based Fine Fibers For Leaded Water Purification, Alejandro J. Castillo Aug 2020

Nonwovens Of Ceramic Decorated Cellulose Based Fine Fibers For Leaded Water Purification, Alejandro J. Castillo

Theses and Dissertations

Fine fibers of cellulose acetate were Forcespun and used to make nonwoven mats of cellulose. Nonwovens were activated using a solution combustion synthesis which deposited iron nitride onto fibers. Cellulose and cellulose composite mats were tested as adsorbents for lead ion in water. Cellulose showed slightly higher adsorption capacities (mg/g) up to 1300 mg/g lead loading. Adsorption data were further analyzed using several isotherms, of which the Dubinin-Raduskevich gave the best fits.

Calculating Elastic Properties Of Confined Simple Fluids, Christopher D. Dobrzanski May 2020

Calculating Elastic Properties Of Confined Simple Fluids, Christopher D. Dobrzanski

Dissertations

Confinement in nanoporous materials is known to affect many properties of the fluids confined within their pores. The elastic properties are no exception. This dissertation begins with an overview of the relevant literature on ways of obtaining elastic properties of confined fluids. It outlines some fundamental gaps in our understanding. The chapters following address some of these gaps in understanding elastic properties of the confined fluid, in particular, how the shape of the confining pore matters, how supercriticality effects the properties, how an equation of state designed for confined fluids can be used to calculate elastic properties, and if an …

Ferrate(Vi) For Wastewater Treatment : Phosphorus Removal, Lei Zheng May 2020

Ferrate(Vi) For Wastewater Treatment : Phosphorus Removal, Lei Zheng

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Phosphorus (P) is a major nutrient present in municipal wastewater. Without proper treatment and management, residual P in treated wastewater finally enters into natural receiving water bodies. Nutrient pollution resulting from excessive P, together with the other nutrient, i.e. nitrogen (N), is a leading cause of eutrophication, a ubiquitous U.S. water quality issue. An overgrowth of algae during eutrophication brings extremely adverse impacts on the water quality. The algal bloom can rapidly deplete dissolved oxygen, lead to the death of aquatic life, increase water turbidity, and cause taste and odor issues. Moreover, some harmful algal boom can produce toxins to …

Dementia is a condition in which higher mental functions are disrupted. It currently affects an estimated 57 million people throughout the world. Dementia diagnosis is difficult since neither anatomical indicator nor functional testing are currently sufficiently sensitive or specific. There remains a long list of outstanding issues that must be addressed. First, multimodal diagnosis has yet to be introduced into the early stages of dementia screening. Second, there is no accurate instrument for predicting the progression of pre-dementia. Third, non-invasive testing cannot be used to provide differential diagnoses. By creating ML models of normal and accelerated brain aging, we intend …

Gas Adsorption In Carbon Nanohorns: Equilibrium And Kinetics, Justin Matthew Petucci Jan 2020

Gas Adsorption In Carbon Nanohorns: Equilibrium And Kinetics, Justin Matthew Petucci

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A study of gas adsorption has been carried out with the focus of better understanding the relationships between the individual properties of the adsorbent/adsorbate (e.g. material structure, interactions, gas size and shape, etc.) and the overall adsorptive properties of the combined system (e.g. capacity, binding strength, equilibration time, etc.) as a function of thermodynamical variables. This is useful from the perspective of a comprehensive and fundamental understanding as well as for practical applications. The equilibrium regime of adsorption on carbon nanostructure materials (nanohorns, nanotubes, and graphite) is investigated using molecular statics (MS) and grand canonical monte carlo (GCMC) methods for …
