Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)

This study has analyzed the generation and characteristics of solid waste in Dhaka city, along with the associated environmental impacts and existing solid waste management practices. Special focus was given on the effect of composting on final disposal of solid waste and effect of landfill site location on transportation cost. An estimate of the future generation rate indicates that the present generation rate of 3500 tons/day may exceed 30 thousand tons/day by the year 2020.The mixed waste dumped at dumping sites is characterized with high organic content and high moisture content (about 80% and 50-70% by weight, respectively). According to …

Pumping Or Mixing System Using A Levitating Magnetic Element, Aexandre N. Terentiev Jul 2002

Pumping Or Mixing System Using A Levitating Magnetic Element, Aexandre N. Terentiev

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Patents

A system capable of pumping or mixing relatively warm fluids using a rotating magnetic element or bearing levitated by a cold superconducting element is disclosed. The magnetic element or bearing carries at least one impeller and is placed in a fluid vessel positioned external to the outer wall of a cryostat or other housing for the superconducting element. A separate cooling source thermally linked to the superconducting element provides the necessary cooling to create the desired superconductive effects and induce levitation in the magnetic element or bearing. The outer wall or housing defines a chamber around the cold superconducting element …

Harmonic Survey Of An Mv Distribution System, Victor J. Gosbell, Damian Mannix, D A. Robinson, Sarath Perera

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

The harmonic survey of a medium voltage distribution system involves three major aspects: (i) the choice of harmonic monitor, (ii) the choice of monitoring site, (iii) processing and presentation of results. As well as a discussion of the methodology for these aspects, the paper will discuss the harmonic levels measured, the minimum survey requirements for finding useful data and the harmonic parameters of residential, commercial and industrial loads.

Design, Construction And Testing Of A Portable Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometry System For Contouring Applications, Tara J. Kneafsey Jan 2001

Design, Construction And Testing Of A Portable Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometry System For Contouring Applications, Tara J. Kneafsey

Masters

Optical surface metrology techniques offer many advantages over conventional methods. Some of these advantages include a greater sensitivity and a whole field analysis that is non-contract. They also offer greater lateral and vertical resolution and are not subject to electromagnetic influence. Despite these many advantages, there has been reluctance in industry to adopt these techniques. This reluctance can be attributed to the use of high-power lasers which are considered dangerous, the expense of the systems and complicated operation and analysis procedures. The objective of the research described in this thesis was to utilise recent developments in laser diodes, data acquisition …

Modeling Moisture Content Of Fine Dead Wildland Fuels: Input To The Behave Fire Prediction System, United States Department Of Agriculture, Forest Service Jan 1986

Modeling Moisture Content Of Fine Dead Wildland Fuels: Input To The Behave Fire Prediction System, United States Department Of Agriculture, Forest Service

Wildfires

A method for predicting the time-dependent nature of fine fuel moisture is badly needed to support fire behavior prediction systems used in fire management. Of the models available, none met all the requirements of the BEHAVE fire behavior prediction system. The Canadian Fire Fuel Moisture Code (FFMC) came closest to meeting our needs and was selected as a base model. Improvements to the FFMC were concentrated on providing a means of accounting for annual and diurnal variation due to solar heating of woody fuels. This was necessary because the FFMC was developed for fuels located within forest stands, a generally …

Llaffs - A Lightning-Locating And Fire-Forecasting System, United States Department Of Agriculture, Forest Service Jan 1983

Llaffs - A Lightning-Locating And Fire-Forecasting System, United States Department Of Agriculture, Forest Service

Forestry

This publication contains programs and documentation to implement an algorithm for calculating lightning fire probability. This calculation is based on a model originally developed for the National Fire-Danger Rating System. The model algorithm estimates the probability that a lightning discharge from cloud to ground will ignite a fire in fuels at the ground terminus of the lightning. Probability is estimated using variables that are measures of the fuel state and type, rain, and lightning. Details of the model can be found in Fuquay and others (1979), Latham (1979), and Fuquay (1980).

Summary Utah/Western Colo, 1992 System Study, United States Department Of Energy Western Area Power Administration Jan 1981

Summary Utah/Western Colo, 1992 System Study, United States Department Of Energy Western Area Power Administration

All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)

The Utah/western Colorado area of the Rocky Mountain Region has adequate coal and water resources to support additional thermal generation plants beyond those already in service. Also within the region are several sites suitable for large-sized hydroelectric pumped-storage projects for purposes of supplying peaking power. The close proximity of these types of electric generating facilities is desirable in providing offpeak energy during the pumping cycle for the pumped-storage units. Considering that the potential capacity of each type of generation is in the 500 to 1,000 (two units) MW range per site and would require major extra-high-voltage (EHV) transmission developments, it …

Grazing On National Forest System Lands: Cost Of Increasing Capacity In The Northern Region, United States Department Of Agriculture, Forest Service Jan 1978

Grazing On National Forest System Lands: Cost Of Increasing Capacity In The Northern Region, United States Department Of Agriculture, Forest Service

Forestry

Sample grazing allotments on Ranger Districts in the Northern Region (USDA Forest Service) were surveyed by questionaire to determine the feasibility of increasing grazing capacity through additional range improvements. The survey included an inventory of existing grazing capacity and the specific kind and cost of proposed improvements. Costs of improvements were amortized and aggregated for each Forest Service Planning Area. The resulting costs were compared with the increased grazing capacity measured in animal unit months (AUM) to determine the cost per additional unit of capacity.

Analysis Of The A3(X3)3 Nuclear Spin System And -Electron Coupled Hyperfine Splitting Constants In Aromatic Hydrocarbons, Juana Acrivos

Faculty Publications, Chemistry

The nuclear spin functions for the A3(X3)3 system have been developed and used to analyse the NMR spectra of (CH3)3C6H3 and (CF3)3C6H3. The π-electron coupled hyperfine splitting constants, obtained from the Ramsey theory with simple Hückel M.O.'s for benzene and without the assumption of an average energy of excitation for the virtual processes which give rise to the coupling, are in agreement with the hyperfine constants observed between the methyl groups and the ring protons in the above compounds.
