Mathematical Modeling Of Convective Heat Transfer In Mammoth Cave, Jonathan Jernigan Dec 1997

Mathematical Modeling Of Convective Heat Transfer In Mammoth Cave, Jonathan Jernigan

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Around two centuries ago, changes were made to the entrances of Mammoth Cave and its passages. Today the Historic Entrance to Mammoth Cave is enlarged and the passage just beyond the entrance known as Houchins' Narrows has been cleared of rubble and filled with sediments. These enlargements have resulted in an increase in airflow throughout the Historic Section of the cave causing environmental conditions such as air temperature and airflow to fluctuate. These fluctuations have negatively impacted inhabitants and contents of the cave system. To restore natural conditions within the cave, Science and Resource Management personnel at Mammoth Cave National …

Uniqueness Of Solutions Of Differential Equations, Gerald Head Aug 1995

Uniqueness Of Solutions Of Differential Equations, Gerald Head

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Uniqueness of solutions for ordinary differential equations is studied. The classical theorems which guarantee uniqueness are surveyed, including discussion and examples. Other results concerning uniqueness are considered in the final chapter, including the relationship between convergence of successive approximations and uniqueness, non-uniqueness and continuous dependence on initial conditions.

Gröbner Bases And Syzygy Modules, Yonggan Zhao Aug 1995

Gröbner Bases And Syzygy Modules, Yonggan Zhao

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The theory of Gröbner bases has become a useful tool in computational commutative algebra. In this paper, we outline some basic results, as they are found in [1], including the concepts of terms ordering, multivariable polynomial division, Gröbner bases, Buchberger's algorithm, and syzygy modules. Specially, we present several equivalent definitions for Gröbner bases and prove how to compute a Gröbner basis for an ideal I of A = k[x1, x2, • • • , xn] generated by {fl, f2, • • • , f8} through Buchberger's algorithm. As an application of Gröbner bases, we present a standard method (see [1]) …

An Object Oriented Implemtation Of Fractal Image Compression, Darrell Burkhead Jul 1995

An Object Oriented Implemtation Of Fractal Image Compression, Darrell Burkhead

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The technique of Fractal Image Compression, although new, has been described in several ways. Thus far, all descriptions of this compression algorithm read by the author have been in procedural form. The purpose of this paper is to present the Fractal Image Compression algorithm in an object-oriented form and to point out the advantages of this organization. The main advantages of taking an object-oriented approach to this problem are flexibility and maintainability. Different aspects of this algorithm are handled by different objects, thereby allowing for easy customization and testing of each part. Another advantage of this approach is that the …

Creation And Simulation Of A Model For A Discrete Time Buffer System With Interrupted Poisson Arrivals And Uncorrelated Server Interruptions, Susanne Naegele-Jackson May 1994

Creation And Simulation Of A Model For A Discrete Time Buffer System With Interrupted Poisson Arrivals And Uncorrelated Server Interruptions, Susanne Naegele-Jackson

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

A mathematical model for a discrete-time buffer system with both arrival and server interruptions is developed. In this model fixed-size packets arrive at the buffer according to a Poisson distribution and are stored there until they can be transmitted over the output channel. Service times are constant and the buffer is assumed to be of infinite size. Both arrival stream as well as the service of the packets are subjected to random interruptions described by Bernoulli processes, where the interruption process of the Poisson input stream is uncorrelated to the interruptions of the output line. Expressions are derived for the …

Comparative Instructor Attitudes Toward College Level English And Mathematics Experiences For Gifted High School Students, Bruce Vickers May 1987

Comparative Instructor Attitudes Toward College Level English And Mathematics Experiences For Gifted High School Students, Bruce Vickers

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Samples derived from a mailed questionnaire were compared. The sample represented high school, community college and university instructors of mathematics and English. The Kentucky public schools sampled were equally represented among high school, community colleges and universities. The research indicated that of those instructors sampled a very high percentage (97.7%) feel that those high school students shown to be academically gifted would benefit from a college experience before high school graduation. The attitudes of those instructors sampled indicated that multiple criteria – grades, recommendations, standardized test scores and personal interview – were considered the preferred method of selection (82.5%). The …

An Analysis Of A New Partizan Game Using Combinatorial Techniques, James Snodgrass Iii Jul 1979

An Analysis Of A New Partizan Game Using Combinatorial Techniques, James Snodgrass Iii

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

John Horton Conway's combinatorial game theory was applied to a new partizan game with a complete analysis as the result. Mathematical values were assigned to the countably infinite number of positions in the game. Direct computation of the first eight values and extension via the Principle of Mathematical Induction made the assignments possible.

Examination of these values (which repeat with period 2) shows that the game, played on a strip of squares, can be won by the first player if the strip is of odd length and can be won by the second player if the strip is of even …

Groups Expressed As The Set-Theoretic Union Of Proper Subgroups, Lana Barrett Nov 1978

Groups Expressed As The Set-Theoretic Union Of Proper Subgroups, Lana Barrett

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

In their paper “Groups as Unions of Proper Subgroups,” published in 1959, Haber and Rosenfeld posed the problem of characterizing groups which can be expressed as the set theoretic union of a finite collection of their proper subgroups. Haber and Rosenfeld established that a group G is the union of three proper subgroups (such a group G shall be called a U3-group) if and only if the Klein 4-group is a homomorphic image of G. Further results concerning U3-groups were obtained in the paper “Groups which are the Union of Three Subgroups” by Bruckhemier, Bryan and …

The Solution Of Ordinary & Partial Differential Equations In Series, Kenneth Wood Aug 1935

The Solution Of Ordinary & Partial Differential Equations In Series, Kenneth Wood

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The purpose of this thesis is to compile and discuss some of the methods of solution of both ordinary and partial differential equations, whose solutions are expressible in the form of a series. An exhaustive study is not attempted. A few of the methods of most common occurrence for finding solutions in series are discussed and examples illustrating these methods are presented.

Analysis Of Errors Made By 717 Collge Students In Arithmetic, O.D. Barnes Aug 1935

Analysis Of Errors Made By 717 Collge Students In Arithmetic, O.D. Barnes

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

During the greater part of the elementary-school training of the average American child he receives a large amount of instruction and drill in arithmetic. In the high school he suddenly drops arithmetic except as he maintains practices in courses of science or high school mathematics and except as the transactions of every day life involve arithmetic. In college the individual may suddenly find that the amount of arithmetical knowledge required is not small as in physics, chemistry or certain commercial courses. Evidence exists to indicate that students doing poor work in these courses are often found deficient in arithmetic.
