In Search Of Star Clusters: An Introduction To The K-Means Algorithm, Marcio Nascimento Jan 2022

In Search Of Star Clusters: An Introduction To The K-Means Algorithm, Marcio Nascimento

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

This article is a gentle introduction to K-means, a mathematical technique of processing data for further classification. We begin with a brief historical introduction, where we find connections with Plato’s Timæus, von Linné’s binomial classification, and the star clustering concept of Mary Sommerville and collaborators. Artificial intelligence algorithms use K-means as a classification methodology to learn about data in a very accurate way, because it is a quantitative procedure based on similarities.

On Oxygen-Rich Sr Variables In The Solar Neighborhood, Tuncay Özdemi̇r Jan 2018

On Oxygen-Rich Sr Variables In The Solar Neighborhood, Tuncay Özdemi̇r

Turkish Journal of Physics

Brightness distribution of variable stars was investigated based on good Hipparcos parallaxes of semiregular variables (SRVs) in the solar neighborhood, and it is shown that the order of the variability types Lb, SR, SRb, SRa, and Mira is, statistically, an order of increasing brightness along the red giant branch and asymptotic giant branch. In addition, it is also shown that the majority of Miras are above and majority of SRVs are below the tip of the red giant branch. The periods of SRVs that fall in Wood's sequence C (fundamental mode) of large Magellanic clouds were identified. Statistically, the order …

The Calculation Of H-Beta Indices For Delta Scuti Variable Stars, Kelsey Jorgenson, Dr. Eric Hintz Apr 2014

The Calculation Of H-Beta Indices For Delta Scuti Variable Stars, Kelsey Jorgenson, Dr. Eric Hintz

Journal of Undergraduate Research

A large part of astronomical research involves gathering information about celestial objects and drawing conclusions about that information. Astronomers commonly gather data for research projects via sweeping surveys, either of particular regions of the sky or of specific kinds of stars or celestial objects. Data from these surveys are often arranged into catalogues. The aim of my research project was to fill in information gaps in the catalogue of information of known delta Scuti variable stars, particularly in the form of the hydrogen beta, or H-beta, index. I will give introductory information about delta Scuti stars as well as the …

Study Of The Eclipsing Binary Ah Cancri, Delora Chere' Tanner, Dr. Benjamin Taylor Feb 2014

Study Of The Eclipsing Binary Ah Cancri, Delora Chere' Tanner, Dr. Benjamin Taylor

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Unlike research in many other disciplines, astronomical research is highly dependent upon the weather. My original proposed research was to further the task of calibrating standard stars in the M67 open cluster. Unfortunately the weather was unfavorable during the window of time that this cluster was available for viewing, therefore, I could not secure the amount of data needed to conduct my proposed research. I decided to change the focus of my research to an individual star located in M67, AH Cancri. I was able to use raw archive data of the M67 star field to study this star.

The Fixed Stars, John F. Downey Dec 1880

The Fixed Stars, John F. Downey

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

The object of this paper is to give, in a popular form, a brief review of what is known about the fixed stars. Although they have always been objects of interest, have guided the mariner over trackless seas, arid have inspired many sublime and noble thoughts, yet, until a comparatively recent date, only three things were known about them; viz., that they retain (approximately) their ·relative positions, that they are self luminous, and that they are very far away.
