Analysis Of International Travel Statistics For 1982, Central Bank Of Nigeria Cbn

Economic and Financial Review

This paper analyses statistics on international travels for 1982 based on information derived from the Nigerian Exchange Control TM (arrival) forms. The forms are designed to enable travellers coming into the country from abroad to declare their holdings of foreign currency, precious stones, jewellery and works of art.

Artificial Intelligence: Myths And Realities, Hugo D'Alarcao Dec 1984

Artificial Intelligence: Myths And Realities, Hugo D'Alarcao

Bridgewater Review

Artificial intelligence the name conjures images of mechanical monsters, the Golem, Dr. Frankenstein’s creation and the rebellious computer Hal. We have always been fascinated by the possibility of creating a machine in our image, but this fascination is often accompanied by apprehension. We fear losing control of our creation and suspect that it might turn against us. It is this duality, this conflict between the desire to create and the fear of the consequences of the creation that has been so successfully exploited by writers. It is also, in part, this fascination that has recently brought the field of Artificial …

Research Note: Pcbs In The Acushnet River Estuary, Jacek Sulanowski

Bridgewater Review

Much media attention has recently been devoted to potentially toxic substances disseminated throughout various components of the environment. In almost every case these substances had been manufactured and distributed under the assumption that they did not pose a threat to man. Indeed when tested by methods current at the time of their initial introduction the substances were considered benign. It was only later when technologically advanced and more sensitive methods of analyses were developed that the presence of these substances was considered to be of real concern. Unfortunately, in the interval between introduction and detection, the accumulation of these substances …

Cultural Commentary: What Hath Rubik Wrought?, Thomas E. Moore

Bridgewater Review

In May, 1980 the Ideal Toy Company launched its newest offering, Rubik’s Cube, at a party in Hollywood, hosted by Zsa-Zsa Gabor and Solomon W. Golomb. Of course Gabor, like the cube, is a Hungarian product but who is Golomb? Well, he is a mathematician at the University of Southern California and an expert in number theory, combinatorics, abstract algebra and coding theory. Rubik invented the cube as an aid in teaching his students three-dimensional thinking. The cube has become the darling of algebraists, who use it to teach group theory to their students.

Soil Testing For Acidity, I R. Wilson Jan 1984

Soil Testing For Acidity, I R. Wilson

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

One of the most important aspects of the soil acidity research programme is the accurate analysis of soil and plant materials.

A soil acidity problem cannot be simply diagnosed with one test. Although the soil pH test is used for the initial evaluation of soil acidity, it does not measure the other factors which affect plant growth as a result of this acidity.

For example, plant growth on a coastal soil with pH 4.3 (in water) may not be affected by applying lime, but growth may improve markedly on a central wheatbelt soil of pH 4,8 (in water).

Another two …

Soil Acidity And Legume Nodulation, J G. Howieson, M. A. Ewing Jan 1984

Soil Acidity And Legume Nodulation, J G. Howieson, M. A. Ewing

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Nitrogen is a basic constituent of protien and is essential to all forms of life. Many agricultural plants are legumes - a group of plants which, in co-operation with specialised soil bacteria, fix their own nitrogen from the air. When the legume dies, the organic matter breaks down anf the nitrogen becomes available to the following crops.

Soil acidity is a major factor limitimg the successful association between legumes and their beneficial soil bacteria in Western Australia.

Breeding Wheat Varieties For Acid Soils, I R. Barclay

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Wheat varieties with improved tolerance of acid soils cold increase yeilds be perhaps 20 per cent or more over a substantialarea ofWestern Australia's eastern wheatbelt.

Aluminium toxicity is probably the main cause of poor root growth and therefore reduced yields on these soils.

Urban Lead In Minnesota: Soil Transect Results Of Four Cities, Howard W. Mielke, Sara Burroughs, Randall Wade, Timothy Yarrow, Paul W. Mielke Jan 1984

Urban Lead In Minnesota: Soil Transect Results Of Four Cities, Howard W. Mielke, Sara Burroughs, Randall Wade, Timothy Yarrow, Paul W. Mielke

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

The focus of this field study was the development of a soil collection and analysis method for the rapid assessment of urban lead (Pb) buildup in four Minnesota cities, Minneapolis, St. Paul, Duluth, and Rochester. The results show that soil Pb buildup is mainly a function of urban size, although specific geographic factors, such as a bluff that constrains city development along a narrow corridor, also play a role in Pb distribution and concentration. Maximum urban Pb concentrations were approximately 25, 70, and 100 times rural soil Pb levels, in Rochester, Duluth, and the centers of Minneapolis and St. Paul …
