Supplement To "On Translations Of Quadratic Residues", Bruce Brandt
Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science
Let n and k be arbitrary positive integers. We will tend to be concerned with small k and with n which are several times k!. I stated two conditions on (n, k) in a previous paper; in this paper I restate them and further explore them. In particular, it is proven that if n is the least number satisfying Condition 1 for a certain k, then the least number for k + l must be at least 2n + l. Condition 1 and Condition 2 are rephrased graph-theoretically. A heuristic explanation for why the quadratic. residues tend to satisfy Condition …

Effect Of Human Disturbance On Small Mammal Communities In Itasca State Park, Minnesota, Nancy L. Staus, Kathleen Conforti, Leslie N. Clapper, Jennifer A. Longhenry, C. C. Schoenbauer, Michael S. Rentz, John R. Tester
Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science
We determined effects of different levels of human disturbance on small mammal richness and relative abundance from live-trapping data obtained in Itasca State Park in northwestern Minnesota. We developed a quantitative measure of human disturbance based on disturbance units and trapped small mammals on three study sites, each reflecting a different level of disturbance. Our data revealed that small mammal diversity decreased with increasing human disturbance. Amount of ground cover and litter depth also appeared to be important in explaining differences in the demographic patterns of small mammals among sites.
Colder By The Lake? The Lake Effect On Static Air Temperatures In Duluth, Minnesota 1961-1990, Graham A. Tobin, Gordon L. Levine, Jacqueline H. Alexander
Colder By The Lake? The Lake Effect On Static Air Temperatures In Duluth, Minnesota 1961-1990, Graham A. Tobin, Gordon L. Levine, Jacqueline H. Alexander
Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science
To test the impact of Lake Superior on local climates, daily temperature data were collected from two weather stations in Duluth, Minnesota for the period 1961 through 1990. The broad goal of the research was to ascertain to what extent climate conditions differed between lakeside and inland locations. Temperature data were standardized to local lake-level to control for altitudinal differences between weather stations. These data were then analyzed at two temporal scales, annual and seasonal, with the focus on mean high and mean low temperatures. Results indicated that the moderating effect of the lake indeed was apparent especially in raising …

Climatology And Interannual Variability Of Wind Speeds In And Around Minnesota, Kevin J. Lawless, Katherine Klink
Climatology And Interannual Variability Of Wind Speeds In And Around Minnesota, Kevin J. Lawless, Katherine Klink
Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science
Wind is receiving renewed attention as an energy resource. Unfortunately, many wind energy assessments are based on records that may not be representative of the long-term wind resource. To better evaluate wind energy potential in and around Minnesota, we analyze wind speeds from 1961 to 1990 for seven stations in the region at a height of about 6.1 m above ground level. We used hourly and three-hourly speed observations to develop a 30-year time series of mean monthly wind speeds, their maxima and minima, and the diurnal wind speed range. Simple linear regression was used to evaluate long-term trends in …

More Triangular Number Results, Bruce Brandt
More Triangular Number Results, Bruce Brandt
Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science
I define an increasing function from triangular numbers to triangular numbers and prove it preserves [mathematical symbol]. I conjecture that whether a triangular number is in the image of this function is related to the magnitude of [mathematical symbol] on the triangular number. Parallel theorems and conjectures exist for pentagonal numbers. I also make conjectures about the partial sums of [mathematical symbol] on the triangular numbers along with a conjecture about the sums of absolute values of [mathematical symbol] on the squares.
On Translations Of Quadratic Residues, Bruce Brandt
On Translations Of Quadratic Residues, Bruce Brandt
Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science
The question is posed: Given a set, S, and a positive integer, k, does a function from k to S exist such that, letting x - y if x is a member of a k-tuple going toy, we never have x - y and y - x? The question is linked to whether circular translations of quadratic residues intersect. Several conjectures are made related to the heuristic that quadratic residues are more inclined to intersect their circular translation than other subsets of Z/nZ with the same number of elements.

Logic And The Second Law Of Thermodynamics, David Van Den Einde
Logic And The Second Law Of Thermodynamics, David Van Den Einde
Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science
This paper presents a 2T thermodynamic cycle operating around the critical locus of ethylene. The cycle converts heat energy to work at a rate greater than the Carnot cycle. This energy conversion rate challenges the use of Carnot's thermodynamic efficiency as a foundation for the second Jaw of thermodynamics. The paper discusses the historical development of classical theory and the second law's foundation in logic.
