Genetic Shift Of Seedling Fluorescence In Ryegrass Over Seed Increase Generations, D J. Floyd, R E. Barker Jun 2024

Genetic Shift Of Seedling Fluorescence In Ryegrass Over Seed Increase Generations, D J. Floyd, R E. Barker

IGC Proceedings (1993-2023)

Seedling root fluorescence has generally been used to discriminate perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) from Italian ryegrass (L. multiflorum Lam.). The trait, however, has introgressed between the two species and breeders now determine fluorescence levels for new ryegrass cultivars. Our objective was to ascertain genetic change for fluorescence expression during generations of seed multiplication. Four ryegrass populations, differing in fluorescence levels, were increased three generations at each of three Oregon locations. Fluorescence levels were measured for each generation cycle at each location. Variation was present for fluorescence among locations within populations and for seed production generation within locations. One …

An Ngqd Based Diagnostic Tool For Pancreatic Cancer, Ryan Ketan Ajgaonkar, Bong Lee, Alina Valimukhametova, Anton Naumov, Giridhar Akkaraju Sep 2023

An Ngqd Based Diagnostic Tool For Pancreatic Cancer, Ryan Ketan Ajgaonkar, Bong Lee, Alina Valimukhametova, Anton Naumov, Giridhar Akkaraju

Research Symposium

Background: Pancreatic cancer remains difficult to detect at early stages which contributes to a poor five-yearsurvival rate. Therefore, early detection approaches based on novel technologies should be explored to address this critical health issue. Nanomaterials have recently emerged as frontrunners for diagnostic applications due to their small size in the 1-100 nm range, which facilitates one-on-one interactions with a variety of biomolecules like oligonucleotides and makes them suitable for a plethora of detection and delivery applications. In this work, the presence of specific pancreatic cancer miRNA (pre-miR-132) is detected utilizing the fluorescence properties of highly biocompatible nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots …

The Effects Of Water Availability On Plant Growth In Sesleria Albicans - Dominated Grasslands In The Burren, Co. Clare, Patrick Moran, S. Ryal, B. Osborne Aug 2023

The Effects Of Water Availability On Plant Growth In Sesleria Albicans - Dominated Grasslands In The Burren, Co. Clare, Patrick Moran, S. Ryal, B. Osborne

IGC Proceedings (1993-2023)

The Burren is a karstic region in the west of Ireland characterised by large areas of exposed limestone pavement with sparse vegetation. Despite the prevailing oceanic climate and high rainfall, substrate volumetric water content values are similar to those of semi-arid habitats due to high run-off. As a consequence, plants growing on the pavement regularly experience water deficit during the summer months. S. albicans, a species reported to be tolerant of water deficits, is one of the most abundant species growing on the limestone pavement. The objective of this study was to determine the impact of water availability on …

Studies Of Optical And Electronic Properties Of Nanoparticles For Solar Energy Conversion, Caitlin Kruse, Libai Huang Aug 2015

Studies Of Optical And Electronic Properties Of Nanoparticles For Solar Energy Conversion, Caitlin Kruse, Libai Huang

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

The higher energy needs for today's technological society requires sustainable and renewable energy source, such as solar energy. This study focuses on using semiconducting quantum dots and fluorescent dyes as light absorbers for solar energy conversion devices such as solar cells. Quantum dots are small nanocrystals (usually 2-10 nm in diameter) with tunable absorbing properties. The smaller the dot, the shorter the wavelength being absorbed. Quantum dots are extremely efficient light absorbers and emitters. Fluorescent dyes have a high quantum yield. In order to examine the energy conversion, cadmium selenide (CdSe) quantum dots and Rhodamine 6G (R6G) dye were spin …
