Predicting Stratigraphic Outcrops Using A Lidar Digital Elevation Model In A Karst Landscape, Fort Hood Military Installation, Texas, Keely Armstrong

Undergraduate Research Conference

The Fort Hood Military Installation is a karst landscape characterized by Cretaceous-age limestone plateaus and canyons in Bell and Coryell counties, Texas. The area is located in the Lampasas Cut Plain region of the Edwards Plateau and is stratigraphically defined by exposures of the Fredericksburg Group, namely the Comanche Peak and Edwards carbonates. The topography is dominated by plateaued draining divides capped by the resistant Edwards limestone and bordered by steep scarps exposing alternating layers of the Comanche Peak and Edwards units. This interfingering relationship has created a variable slope along the edges of the plateaus, defined by lithology.

Comparison Of Sustainable Development In Three Countries, Brittany Williams

School of Human Sciences Research Showcase

Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. It contains within it two key concepts: the concept of needs, in particular the essential needs of the world's poor, to which overriding priority should be given; and the idea of limitations imposed by the state of technology and social organization on the environment's ability to meet present and future needs.

Water Soluble Cationic Porphyrin Sensor For Detection Of Hg2+, Pb2+, Cd2+, And Cu2+, Christopher Orr, Miranda Uherek, Matibur Zamadar

Undergraduate Research Conference

Here we report the sensing properties of the aqueous solution of mesotetra(N-methyl-4-pyridyl)porphine tetrachloride (1) for simultaneous detection of toxic metal ions by using UV-vis spectroscopy. Cationic porphyrin 1 displayed different electronic absorptions in UV-vis region upon interacting with Hg2+, Pb2+, Cd2+, and Cu2+ ions in neutral water solution at room temperature. Quite interestingly, the porphyrin 1 showed that it can function as a single optical chemical sensor and/ or metal ion receptor capable of detecting two or more toxic metal ions, particularly, Hg2+, Pb2+, and Cd2+ ions coexisting in a water sample. Porphyrin 1 in an aqueous solution provides a …

The Foundations Of Mathematics History, Concepts, And Applications In Higher Level Mathematics, Clifton Henry Mar 2016

The Foundations Of Mathematics History, Concepts, And Applications In Higher Level Mathematics, Clifton Henry

Undergraduate Research Conference

When people hear the word mathematics, some think numbers and others think solving for x and y. In all truth, the field of mathematics is more than numbers and equations. Mathematics was founded based off the principle of counting in 50,000 B.C.E. Mathematical contributions and ideas increased from the Babylonian Empire in 2000 BC to the 18th century, where mathematicians and philosophers developed ideas in algebra, geometry and calculus.

A Fixed-Inverse Binary Misclassification Model Under Possible False-Positive Misclassification, Asmerom Tesfamichael, Kent Riggs

Bright Ideas Conference

In this project, we develop a particular statistical model for binary data that allows for the possibility of false-positive misclassification. To account for the misclassification, the model incorporates a two-stage sampling scheme.

• Next, we apply maximum likelihood methods to find estimators of the primary prevalence parameter p as well as the false-positive misclassification rate parameter ϕ. In addition, we derive confidence intervals for p based on inverting Wald, score and likelihood ratio statistics.

• Also, we graphically compare coverage and width properties of the Wald-based, score-based, and likelihood ratio-based confidence intervals for p through a Monte Carlo simulation. The …

Millions of dollars are spent every year on diet beverages and there has been much controversy on the contents in these beverages, mainly the artificial sweetener aspartame. It is known that aspartame is included in many diet beverages, but the actual amount of aspartame used is not listed in the nutritional facts or provided by the beverage manufacturers. For this reason, the aspartame content of various soft drinks, Coke Zero, Pepsi Max, Diet Pepsi, and Pepsi Next, was analyzed and compared to a calibration plot utilizing Diet Coke as a standard. Diet Coke was used due to the unavailablity of …

Turrent Configurations And Particle Paths, Zihao Lawrence Jian

Undergraduate Research Conference

The research originated from the question of how many rows of soldiers or turrets could be placed and allow for all turrets to have a projectile path. We find the relationship between the safe radius for each turret/soldier and the number of rows for which each soldier will have a clear projectile path. As shown, we place turrets in a grid configuration in the Cartesian plane.
