Green Chemistry: The Oxidation Of Benzaldehyde Using Atmospheric Oxygen And N-Heterocyclic Carbenes As Catalysts, Alex Brody, John Morgan
Green Chemistry: The Oxidation Of Benzaldehyde Using Atmospheric Oxygen And N-Heterocyclic Carbenes As Catalysts, Alex Brody, John Morgan
Student Research Poster Presentations 2020
Oxidation is a vital process in organic and biochemical reactions. In particular, the oxidation of aromatic aldehydes to carboxylic acids and esters is a vital process used in many different environments. Benzaldehyde is one common subject of this type of reaction, used in the synthesis of benzoic acid and benzoate derivatives. Unfortunately, the industrial synthesis of these compounds uses harmful heavy metal oxidants such as Chromium(VI) and Manganese(VII), which are very harmful to the environment. We proposed to eliminate these pollutants by using atmospheric oxygen and an organic catalyst in a solvent free reaction. This reaction would then be microwaved …
Chemistry In Medicine, Olivia Visaggio, Alyssa Bondi, Matthew Gillingham, Hailey Loughlin
Chemistry In Medicine, Olivia Visaggio, Alyssa Bondi, Matthew Gillingham, Hailey Loughlin
Student Research Poster Presentations 2020
The chemistry behind medicine is important and necessary to study many different drugs and their effects. In this project, we focused on the chemical composition and mechanisms of various drugs. The drugs we focused on include Opioids, NSAIDs, and other medications, such as Benzodiazepines and antibiotics. For each drug, we provided its structure as well as the functional groups, which include a part of a molecule that is recognized based on its arrangement of atoms. Organic Chemistry provides individuals with an understanding of various organic compounds, and this field of study is important as it explains the ways in which …

3D-printing is a relatively inexpensive additive manufacturing method used to create tangible objects. As a relatively new technology, the true capability of 3D-printing has not yet been fully exploited, especially in academic and research/teaching settings. Through this work, 3D-printing in a classroom and research environment is employed as a tool for creation of fully customizable, three-dimensional molecular models and for the visualization of theoretical abstract concepts.

Florida Science: The Science That Makes Florida Different, Terence W. Cavanaugh
Florida Science: The Science That Makes Florida Different, Terence W. Cavanaugh
Secondary Level Resources
This book was created to assist students with their understanding of how science occurs in Florida. When teaching science or any subject it’s important to remember to begin with the concrete and then move to the abstract. I have found that it has helped my students when I begin by teaching science concepts in a concrete manner and expand from there. For example, when I taught about topographic maps, the students were much more successful in their learning when I started with local topographic maps that included the school and the surrounding area than with places that had mountains or …

Audiobook Of A World From Dust, Ben Mcfarland
Faculty Open Access Books
A World From Dust is a popular science book about the chemical sequence behind the evolution of creation.
It’s about how geology, biology, and chemistry worked together over billions of years, providing a hidden order under the random flow of genes and lava and water.
It’s about the chemical job that each element takes up in life, and how that job is predictable from its place on the periodic table.
It can be told as the story of many elements: how iron and sulfur gave a spark of life; how manganese was a key for oxygen; and how copper and …
