Study Of Augmentations On Historical Manuscripts Using Trocr, Erez Meoded Dec 2023

Study Of Augmentations On Historical Manuscripts Using Trocr, Erez Meoded

Theses and Dissertations

Historical manuscripts are an essential source of original content. For many reasons, it is hard to recognize these manuscripts as text. This thesis used a state-of-the-art Handwritten Text Recognizer, TrOCR, to recognize a 16th-century manuscript. TrOCR uses a vision transformer to encode the input images and a language transformer to decode them back to text. We showed that carefully preprocessed images and designed augmentations can improve the performance of TrOCR. We suggest an ensemble of augmented models to achieve an even better performance.

Smart Homes And You: Iot Device Data Risks In An Ever-Changing World, Autumn Person

Theses and Dissertations

Social media applications are increasingly seen as a national security threat and a cause for concern because they can be used to create user profiles on government personnel and on US citizens. These profiles could be used for big data and artificial intelligence purposes of interest to foreign governments. With the rise of big data and AI being used, foreign governments could use this data for a variety of purposes that can affect normal everyday citizens, not just high value personnel. IoT (Internet of Things) devices that the population uses everyday can also pose the same threat. These devices can …

Optimizing Convolutional Neural Networks For Transient Detection In Optical Astronomy With Augmented Datasets, Wendy Mendoza Jul 2023

Optimizing Convolutional Neural Networks For Transient Detection In Optical Astronomy With Augmented Datasets, Wendy Mendoza

Theses and Dissertations

We present a technique for optical transient detection using artificial neural networks, particularly a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), a deep learning algorithm. This method analyzes images of the same area of the sky captured by several telescopes, with one image serving as a reference for a probable transient’s epoch and the other as an image from a previous epoch. We train the CNN on simulated sources and test it on actual image data samples using data from the Dr. Cristina V. Torres Memorial Astronomical Observatory and Sloan Digital Sky Survey. This autonomous detection method replaces the standard procedure, which involves …

Extending The Convolution In Graph Neural Networks To Solve Materials Science And Node Classification Problems, Steph-Yves Mike Louis Jul 2023

Extending The Convolution In Graph Neural Networks To Solve Materials Science And Node Classification Problems, Steph-Yves Mike Louis

Theses and Dissertations

The usage of graph to represent one's data in machine learning has grown in popularity in both academia and the industry due to its inherent benefits. With its flexible nature and immediate translation to real life observed objects, graph representation had a considerable contribution in advancing the state-of-the-art performance of machine learning in materials.

In this dissertation proposal, we discuss how machines can learn from graph encoded data and provide excellent results through graph neural networks (GNN). Notably, we focus our adaptation of graph neural networks on three tasks: predicting crystal materials properties, nullifying the negative impact of inferior graph …

Energy Planning Model Design For Forecasting The Final Energy Consumption Using Artificial Neural Networks, Haidy Eissa Dec 2021

Energy Planning Model Design For Forecasting The Final Energy Consumption Using Artificial Neural Networks, Haidy Eissa

Theses and Dissertations

“Energy Trilemma” has recently received an increasing concern among policy makers. The trilemma conceptual framework is based on three main dimensions: environmental sustainability, energy equity, and energy security. Energy security reflects a nation’s capability to meet current and future energy demand. Rational energy planning is thus a fundamental aspect to articulate energy policies. The energy system is huge and complex, accordingly in order to guarantee the availability of energy supply, it is necessary to implement strategies on the consumption side. Energy modeling is a tool that helps policy makers and researchers understand the fluctuations in the energy system. Over the …

Improving Space Efficiency Of Deep Neural Networks, Aliakbar Panahi Jan 2021

Improving Space Efficiency Of Deep Neural Networks, Aliakbar Panahi

Theses and Dissertations

Language models employ a very large number of trainable parameters. Despite being highly overparameterized, these networks often achieve good out-of-sample test performance on the original task and easily fine-tune to related tasks. Recent observations involving, for example, intrinsic dimension of the objective landscape and the lottery ticket hypothesis, indicate that often training actively involves only a small fraction of the parameter space. Thus, a question remains how large a parameter space needs to be in the first place — the evidence from recent work on model compression, parameter sharing, factorized representations, and knowledge distillation increasingly shows that models can be …

From Cellular To Holistic: Development Of Algorithms To Study Human Health And Diseases, Casey Anne Cole Apr 2020

From Cellular To Holistic: Development Of Algorithms To Study Human Health And Diseases, Casey Anne Cole

Theses and Dissertations

The development of theoretical computational methods and their application has become widespread in the world today. In this dissertation, I present my work in the creation of models to detect and describe complex biological and health related problems. The first major part of my work centers around the creation and enhancement of methods to calculate protein structure and dynamics. To this end, substantial enhancement has been made to the software package REDCRAFT to better facilitate its usage in protein structure calculation. The enhancements have led to an overall increase in its ability to characterize proteins under difficult conditions such as …

Curtus: An Nlp Tool To Map Job Skills To Academic Courses, Daniel Rockwell Jan 2019

Curtus: An Nlp Tool To Map Job Skills To Academic Courses, Daniel Rockwell

Theses and Dissertations

Many businesses are burdened with the need to train students for the job instead of finding them prepared for it. Few business leaders feel that colleges prepare students for future jobs from day one. It can be a challenge for colleges to determine if their curricula meet the industry needs. Mapping industry needs to academic courses can be advantageous to both parties as it will allow colleges to be aligned with the industry needs and accordingly satisfy those needs and will allow the industry to hire better prepared graduates. In an attempt to address this, a system prototype that uses …

Target Detection Using Convolutional Neural Networks, Robert P. Loibl Mar 2018

Target Detection Using Convolutional Neural Networks, Robert P. Loibl

Theses and Dissertations

This research explores the use of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) to classify targets of interest within satellite imagery. Methods were specifically devised for the classification of airports within Landsat-8 scenes. A novel automated dataset generation technique was developed to create labeled datasets from satellite imagery using only coordinate metadata. Using this approach a very large dataset of over 132,000 labeled images was created without human input. This dataset was used to evaluate the effects of color and resolution on airport classification accuracy. Two experiments were run with the first experiment classifying large airports with 96.8% accuracy, and the second classifying …

Exploring Algorithms To Recognize Similar Board States In Arimaa, Malik Khaleeque Ahmed Feb 2017

Exploring Algorithms To Recognize Similar Board States In Arimaa, Malik Khaleeque Ahmed

Theses and Dissertations

The game of Arimaa was invented as a challenge to the field of game-playing artificial intelligence, which had grown somewhat haughty after IBM's supercomputer Deep Blue trounced world champion Kasparov at chess. Although Arimaa is simple enough for a child to learn and can be played with an ordinary chess set, existing game-playing algorithms and techniques have had a difficult time rising up to the challenge of defeating the world's best human Arimaa players, mainly due to the game's impressive branching factor. This thesis introduces and analyzes new algorithms and techniques that attempt to recognize similar board states based on …

Using A Model Of Temporal Latency To Improve Supervisory Control Of Human-Robot Teams, Kyle Lee Blatter Jul 2014

Using A Model Of Temporal Latency To Improve Supervisory Control Of Human-Robot Teams, Kyle Lee Blatter

Theses and Dissertations

When humans and remote robots work together on a team, the robots always interact with a human supervisor, even if the interaction is limited to occasional reports. Distracting a human with robotic interactions doesn't pose a problem so long as the inclusion of robots increases the team's overall effectiveness. Unfortunately, increasing the supervisor's cognitive load may decrease the team's sustainable performance to the point where robotic agents are more a liability than an asset. Present approaches resolve this problem with adaptive autonomy, where a robot changes its level of autonomy based on the supervisor's cognitive load. This thesis proposes to …

Actual Entities: A Control Method For Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, Erica Absetz Apr 2013

Actual Entities: A Control Method For Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, Erica Absetz

Theses and Dissertations

The focus of this thesis is on Actual Entities, a concept created by the philosopher Alfred North Whitehead, and how the concept can be applied to Unmanned Aerial Vehicles as a behavioral control method. Actual Entities are vector based, atomic units that use a method called prehension to observe their environment and react with various actions. When combining multiple Actual Entities a Colony of Prehending Entities is created; when observing their prehensions an intelligent behavior emerges. By applying the characteristics of Actual Entities to Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, specifically in a situation where they are searching for targets, this emergent, intelligent …
