In recent years, highly sophisticated cybergroups, armed with substantial funds and advanced technology, have intensified their focus on hospitals. Despite the advice against it, most hospitals have paid the ransom in order to regain access to their electronic systems and patient data, underlining the severity of these attacks.

Purpose of the Study: The purpose of this research was to evaluate the effects of ransomware attacks on hospitals in the US to determine if the patients were at risk due to hackers withholding patient information …

Charged Excitons And Trions In The Semiconductor Quantum Dot: Electronic Structure And Effect Of External Fields, Jayden Leonard Jan 2024

Charged Excitons And Trions In The Semiconductor Quantum Dot: Electronic Structure And Effect Of External Fields, Jayden Leonard

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

In this thesis, we are studying the electronic structures and optical properties of charged excitons and trions (i.e., the exciton-associated quasi-particles in semiconductor materials) in quantum dots which have a three-dimensional confinement configuration. We also consider the effects of an external electric and magnetic field on the charged excitons. Initially theorized in 1958, charged excitons are a fairly new phenomenon in physics in which an exciton (i.e., an electron coupled with an electron hole) is coupled with either another electron or another hole (giving either a ‘negative exciton’ or ‘positive exciton’ accordingly). In the completely confined configuration like the quantum …

Factors Associated With Acoustic Bat Presence During Spring Emergence In The Appalachian Mountains Of Western Virginia, Emily Kirk Pody Jan 2024

Factors Associated With Acoustic Bat Presence During Spring Emergence In The Appalachian Mountains Of Western Virginia, Emily Kirk Pody

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Studies of threats that bats face during hibernation have increased in response to white-nose syndrome (WNS), a fungal disease that has ravaged North American bat populations. However, impacts of WNS on bat ecology during spring emergence, when bats are potentially recovering from infection and allocating resources for reproduction, is relatively understudied. As more bat species become listed at the federal and state level, the need to understand the factors associated with spring emergence is critical for improving conservation guidelines and habitat management practices. Acoustic monitoring is an efficient method for monitoring bat presence for prolonged periods of time, giving biologists …

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The goal of this study is to examine the effect of urbanization and latitude on bone morphology, specifically limb length and bone density among gray squirrels endemic to the eastern United States. This study’s hypotheses are as follows: gray squirrels occupying lower latitudes will have larger body sizes and longer limbs relative to body size than those at higher latitudes following Bergmann’s and Allen’s rules. Further, squirrels in urban habitats will have greater bone density than those in rural habitats. Results show moderate correlation between body mass and respective proxies and latitude following Bergmann’s rule. Weak correlations were found between …

The Comparison Of Different Wetland Fish Assemblages Over Time, Robert Edward Adelstein Jan 2024

The Comparison Of Different Wetland Fish Assemblages Over Time, Robert Edward Adelstein

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Wetlands provide essential ecosystem services. Historically, we have drained and filled 73% of wetlands for agricultural use throughout the United States from the 1780s to the 1980s (Dahl, 1990). A nationwide focus on restoring wetlands has since occurred. Literature on restored/mitigated wetlands is rife with examples that do and do not support the same ecosystem services as natural wetlands (Langston, 1997; Meil, 2014). Restoration of wetlands occurred at the Green Bottom Wildlife Management Area (GBWMA) over several decades. Various sections of the wetland were classified by age, water depth, and vegetation. One hypothesis was that differences in fish assemblage would …

An Analysis Of Corporate Social Responsibility And Real Earnings Management, Rachel Brassine Jan 2024

An Analysis Of Corporate Social Responsibility And Real Earnings Management, Rachel Brassine

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Real earnings management (REM) is costly in the form of intense loan restrictions, increased interest expense, and public scrutiny. Nevertheless, companies still practice REM. Based on agency and stakeholder theories, this research predicts that as a company’s CSR score increases, REM will decrease, and this association will become more negative when a critical mass of females on the board of directors exists and when a board-level CSR committee is present. This study also predicts that when a company offers an executive incentive plan based on CSR metrics, REM will decrease, and the relationship will become more negative with a critical …

Characterizing The Vegetation And Effects Of Climate Change On Parris Island, A Sea Island Ecosystem, Cody Hart Goodson Jan 2023

Characterizing The Vegetation And Effects Of Climate Change On Parris Island, A Sea Island Ecosystem, Cody Hart Goodson

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Coastal habitats provide many ecosystem services, protecting coastlines from storm surges and erosion, diminishing the effects of eutrophication, sequestering large amounts of carbon, and acting as vital wildlife habitat. Sea-level rise and increased storm surge intensity associated with climate change are increasingly disrupting coastal habitats. These disturbances can shift environmental gradients that drive the zonation of coastal vegetation types, driving habitat conversion. Monitoring coastal habitat conversion can improve our understanding of the dynamic effects of climate change on these landscapes. Therefore, our objectives for chapter 1 were to identify and describe the distributions of vegetation types present on Marine Corps …

This research helps fill this identified gap in the currently available environmental preservation resources. This mixed methods study explored the perceptions, ideas, and successful solutions exhibited by environmental preservation …

On 2-Primitive Triangle Decompositions Of Cocktail Party Graphs, Ian P. Waddell Jan 2023

On 2-Primitive Triangle Decompositions Of Cocktail Party Graphs, Ian P. Waddell

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

A decomposition of a graph Γ is a collection C of subgraphs, perhaps nonisomorphic, that partition the edges of Γ. Analogously, consider a group of truck drivers whose non-overlapping routes jointly cover all of the roads between a set of cities; that is, each road is traversed by precisely one driver. In this scenario, the cities are the vertices of the graph, the roads are the edges between vertices, and the drivers’ routes are the subgraphs in the decomposition. Given a graph H, we call C an H-decomposition of Γ if each subgraph in C is isomorphic to …

A Path Planning Framework For Multi-Agent Robotic Systems Based On Multivariate Skew-Normal Distributions, Peter Estephan

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

This thesis presents a path planning framework for a very-large-scale robotic (VLSR) system in an known obstacle environment, where the time-varying distributions of agents are applied to represent the multi-agent robotic system (MARS). A novel family of the multivariate skew-normal (MVSN) distributions is proposed based on the Bernoulli random field (BRF) referred to as the Bernoulli-random-field based skew-normal (BRF-SN) distribution. The proposed distributions are applied to model the agents’ distributions in an obstacle-deployed environment, where the obstacle effect is represented by a skew function and separated from the no-obstacle agents’ distributions. First, the obstacle layout is represented by a Hilbert …

Leveraging Explainable Artificial Intelligence (Xai) To Understand Performance Deviations In Load Tests Of Large Software Systems, Eric Shoemaker Jan 2023

Leveraging Explainable Artificial Intelligence (Xai) To Understand Performance Deviations In Load Tests Of Large Software Systems, Eric Shoemaker

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Performance testing generates vast amounts of data, making it challenging for human analysts to process within a reasonable timeframe. Therefore, black-box machine learning models are often used to determine pass/fail status, but these models lack transparency and cannot explain why a test has failed, leading to a time-consuming manual analysis process. To address this issue, this thesis proposes using Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) to improve the trustworthiness of black-box and interpretable models in performance testing. The proposed approach leverages the Shapley Additive Explanation (SHAP) algorithm as a surrogate model to help performance analysts understand the decision-making process of black-box machine …

Sequential Assembly Of 1-D And 2-D Origami Arrays, Nathan Shin Jan 2022

Sequential Assembly Of 1-D And 2-D Origami Arrays, Nathan Shin

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

DNA origami, invented by Paul Rothemund in 2006, provides many possible routes for the synthesis of complex macromolecular assemblies. This project involves the creation of 1-D and 2-D arrays of cross origami to support the development of DNA detection devices by providing precise platforms for these devices. The M13 plasmid is the most commonly used scaffold in DNA nanotechnology, limiting the size and complexity of an individual DNA origami construct. However, by creating larger assemblies, the dimensions can be multiplied. For example, by alternating two different types of cross origami, optical reporters can be separated by 200 nm, which is …

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The treatment of household waste and water via wastewater treatment plants is an extremely important process that helps to keep humans and animals healthy and safe (Environmental Protection Agency, 2019). With so many ways to treat wastewater, it is difficult to know which treats most effectively. Most treatment is done through the introduction of air which serves to evenly distribute oxygen for aerobic biodegradation in the wastewater. The effectiveness of the treatment is directly related to the process upon which air is introduced. The different ways of injecting air into the treatment process makes a significant difference in treatment outcome. …

On Hamilton Cycle Decompositions Of Complete Multipartite Graphs Which Are Both Cyclic And Symmetric, Fatima A. Akinola Jan 2021

On Hamilton Cycle Decompositions Of Complete Multipartite Graphs Which Are Both Cyclic And Symmetric, Fatima A. Akinola

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Let G be a graph with v vertices. A Hamilton cycle of a graph is a collection of edges which create a cycle using every vertex. A Hamilton cycle decomposition is cyclic if the set of cycle is invariant under a full length permutation of the vertex set. We say a decomposition is symmetric if all the cycles are invariant under an appropriate power of the full length permutation. Such decompositions are known to exist for complete graphs and families of other graphs. In this work, we show the existence of cyclic n-symmetric Hamilton cycle decompositions of a family …

Luminescence Emission In A Nanocrystal Doped By A Transition Metal Impurity, George Chappell Jr.

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

In this thesis we consider the structure of magnetic ion centers with 3d-electrons in quantum dots under the effects of Coulomb and exchange interaction between the 3d-electrons of the impurity centers and the confined electrons (or holes) existing inside the nanocrystals. In particular, we are interested how this interaction changes the photoluminescence properties of those materials. We will make use of representation theory and the symmetry of the crystal structure to find the orthonormal wave functions that make up the wave functions of the outer, 3d-electrons inside our dot. The Coulomb and exchange interaction …

Markov Chain Epidemic Models And Parameter Estimation, Oluwatobiloba Ige

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Over the years, various parts of the world have experienced disease outbreaks. Mathematical models are used to describe these outbreaks. We study the transmission of disease in simple cases of disease outbreaks by using compartmental models with Markov chains. First, we explore the formulation of compartmental SIS (Susceptible-Infectious-Susceptible) and SIR (Susceptible-Infectious-Recovered) disease models. These models are the basic building blocks of other compartmental disease models. Second, we build SIS and SIR disease models using both discrete and continuous time Markov chains. In discrete time models, transmission occurs at fixed time steps, and in continuous time models, transmission may occur at …

Revision Of The Genus Styxosaurus And Relationships Of The Late Cretaceous Elasmosaurids (Sauropterygia: Plesiosauria) Of The Western Interior Seaway, Elliott Armour Smith

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Growing evidence indicates that elasmosaurid plesiosaurs from the Late Cretaceous Western Interior Seaway are members of a single clade, the Styxosaurinae. The styxosaurines are reported to be mostly Campanian in age, and taxa within the clade obtain the longest necks, by number of cervical vertebrae, of any known vertebrate. The styxosaurines are morphologically diverse and include taxa that exhibit a secondary reduction in neck length. Given the evolutionary plasticity of postcranial characters in plesiosaurs in general, and neck length in elasmosaurs, scrutiny of cranial osteology is pertinent to advancing understanding of Western Interior Seaway elasmosaurids. This study finds that an …
