Land Reclamation In The North Stirling Land Conservation District, M F. Lewis, National Soil Conservation Program (Australia)
Resource management technical reports
Investigations were carried out to determine the interaction between the lakes and groundwater systems, the influence of bedrock structures on groundwater flow, and the regional flow characteristics in the basin. The hydrological investigations showed that water does flow from lakes to the groundwater system. However, the benefits from draining land have to be compared with the benefits of not adding water to the lakes. A basin water balance showed that most of the excess water resulting from reduced epotranspiration since clearing remains in the basin as increased groundwater storage. Only relatively small quantities of the extra water leave the basin …

Fodder Trees And Shrubs For High Rainfall Areas Of South Western Australia, Daya Patabendige, P R. Scott, Edward C. Lefroy
Resource management technical reports
In south Western Australia, the lack of good quality feed in late summer and autumn is a major constraint to livestock production. This feed gap is usually filled by costly supplementary hand feeding of grain or hay. The ability of some trees and shrubs to provide good quality forage during summer and autumn has generated interest for many years (Corbett, 1951; Everist, 1969; Snook, 1987;Oldham et al., 1991, Lefroy, 1991). The dual benefits of reducing the need for supplementary hand feeding and deferring the grazing of annual pastures until they are well established has recently led to the recognition of …

Methods For Calculating Solar Position And Day Length Including Computer Programs And Subroutines, M L. Roderick
Resource management technical reports
The theory of calculating solar position is described. Using this theory, a number of computing routines are prepared in the C programming language. These routines are suitable for users who program in C, and have an ANSI compatible C compiler. These routines are fully documented, with both the underlying theory, and code particulars, and may be used as a stand alone reference. The source code has also been published in appendix B of the report.

Land Resources Of The Kellerberrin Region, William Morrison Mcarthur
Resource management technical reports
The landforms and associated soils in the Kellerberrin area (Figure 1) were mapped using a combination of air photo interpretation (1:50,000 black and white, 1984 photography) and ground traverses along roads and tracks. Mapping units used are similar to those described by Bettenay and Hingston (1961; 1964) and Hingston and Bettenay (1961) for the Merredin district. The present survey may be seen as a western extension of the Merredin survey; it adjoins the work of Lantzke (in prep) on the west

Groundwater Investigations In The Jerramungup Shire, S B. Martin
Resource management technical reports
Drilling was carried out with a dry rotary auger rig, with a depth limit of 31 m for the first 28 piezometers and 40 m thereafter. Farmers assisted in the site selection and construction of the piezometers in most cases and will in the future be responsible for monitoring their piezometer(s) regularly. The average depth to bedrock was 18 m and the average dept to groundwater was 9 m, with an average salinity level of 3600 mS/m. The average total salt storage was approximately 2800 tonnes per hectare.
Deep Drains : A Case Study And Discussion, Russell John Speed, John Andrew Simons
Deep Drains : A Case Study And Discussion, Russell John Speed, John Andrew Simons
Resource management technical reports
Typically, deep, open drains are about 2 in deep and about 1 in wide at the base and dug with a backhoe or excavator. The movement of groundwater is controlled by two factors. One is the physical ability of the material to transmit fluid. Permeability is the measure used to describe the ability of a material to transmit fluid through pores and cracks. It depends largely upon porosity (the percentage of the total volume of thematerial that is pore space) and the degree of interconnectedness of the pore spaces. The other factor controlling groundwater flow is gradient. George (1985) found …

Tackling Salinity On The Esperance Sandplain, S J. Hearn, National Soil Conservation Program (Australia)
Tackling Salinity On The Esperance Sandplain, S J. Hearn, National Soil Conservation Program (Australia)
Resource management technical reports
The Esperance sandplain has serious secondary salinity. Waterlogging and poor surface drainage compound the problems. The original aim of the project was to promote high water use pastures for areas of deep sands as a way of limiting rechrge to the saline groundwater. This aim was later broadened to include the promotion of deep-rooted perennial pastures on all suitable soils.

The Mallee Road Catchment Project, Rachel Siewert, S Abbott, National Soil Conservation Program (Australia), R A. Nulsen
Resource management technical reports
The Mallee Road Sump catchment is a 30,000 ha catchment located immediately south of a major drainage divide in the central southern agricultural region of Western Australia. The catchment has been largely developed for agriculture over the last 25 years and is now showing development of secondary land salinization. Agronomic trials have shown that it is possible to considerably increase plant production in the area and simultaneously reduce recharge to the groundwaters.

Horticultural Capability Study Of Soils Adjacent To Plantations At Carnarvon, Western Australia, M R. Wells, J A. Bessell-Browne
Resource management technical reports
A detailed soil survey and horticultural capability assessment was undertaken over 1,804 ha of land adjacent to existing plantations on levees of the Gascoyne River near Carnarvon. The study provides mapped land resource data and advice in relation to land management and the possibility of further land release for horticulture. In the assessment of horticultural capability primary consideration has been given to the risk of erosion during flood events, to salinity, and to soil drainage conditions.

The Impact Of Mining And Mining Exploration On Range Resources And Pastoral Pursuits In The Pilbara, Gascoyne, Murchison And Goldfields Regions Of Western Australia, H J. Pringle, G A. Carter, J L. James, R E Y O'Connor
Resource management technical reports
Mining activity occurs very widely over relatively small areas of the rangelands. However, it is an intense landuse which can create significant offsite effects. Mining activity is most common around metamorphic 'greenstone' belts and broad drainages. Pastoralists reported both benefits and adverse affects as a consequence of mining activity. The main grievances related to unnecessary and excessive disturbance of pastoral land and the failure of operators to inform the pastoralist of their intentions.

Three areas were visited, namely the Coobidge creek catchment in Esperance, the Koolanooka-Bowgada Catchment near Morawa and the Petan Creek Catchment (Winchester catchment) near Carnamah. Each area was advised independently through separate reports and the three reports are collated herein for future reference.
Toward Better Minimum Tillage For South-Coastal Sandplain Soils, W L. Crabtree
Toward Better Minimum Tillage For South-Coastal Sandplain Soils, W L. Crabtree
Resource management technical reports
Seventeen farmers compared their conventional cropping practices with some form of minimum tillage cropping. The minimum tilled crops yielded 21 percent less grain than the conventionally sown crops. The reasons for these decreased yields were in most cases related to inexperienced management. The minimum tilled treatments usually had very poor weed kill strategies which often resulted in large weeds at sowing, very cloddy seed-beds, and numerous insects in the young crops.

Preliminary Groundwater And Salinity Investigation In The Eastern Wheatbelt. 1. Brennand's Catchment, Richard J. George Dr, P W C Frantom
Resource management technical reports
Groundwaters were found to be 10 m below the floor of the ancestral playa lake in Brennand's catchment. They were extremely saline. A groundwater flow system was not established on much of the catchment. Flow was observed to be occurring from recharge areas near the playa lakes towards the midslopes of the catchment. Flow was apparently restricted from leaving Brennand's catchment because of obstruction to groundwaters created by dolerite dykes.

Preliminary Groundwater And Salinity Investigation In The Eastern Wheatbelt. 4. Kitto's Hillslope, Tammin - 1985-90, Richard J. George Dr
Resource management technical reports
The investigation revealed that a deep, brackish to saline groundwater system and dolerite dyke, contained within the saprolite were responsible for the secondary salinity; the annual discharge of water and salt at the seep from the damp groundwater system was about 2800 kL and 17 tonnes respectively; and the water-tables were not rising and that the most appropriate management of the site was to plant salt tolerant forage plants in combination with trees.

An Economic Model For Evaluating Strategies On The South Coast Of W.A. Which Reduce Wind Erosion : Documentation, A D. Bathgate
Resource management technical reports
The sandplain region on the south coast has predominately sandy soils which are subject to erosive winds when ground cover is likely to be scarce. This can often result in production losses of crop and pasture. There is concern that wind erosion will lead to the depletion of the soil resource in the long term. The model is multi-period linear programming with a planning horizon of 10 years. Effects of wind erosion on production can be imposed on the model for the first five years after the erosion event.

A land unit map of the region has been prepared at a scale of 1:50,000. Additional maps of climate, surface and groundwater supplies and existing land use have also been prepared at smaller scales. The capability of each of the land units to support grazing, market gardens, vineyards, orchards and forestry has been assessed. The limitations for housing on small rural lots have also been evaluated. Describes the methods by which the survey was undertakenand will be primary of use to the technical user.
Floristic Survey Of Remnant Vegetation In The Dandaragan Area, Western Australia, Edward Arnold Griffin
Floristic Survey Of Remnant Vegetation In The Dandaragan Area, Western Australia, Edward Arnold Griffin
Resource management technical reports
A study involving the documentation of the extent and floristic composition of patches of native vegetation left uncleared by agricultural development is described. Floristic regions were defined in the study area by detailed analysis of the floristic data. The concentration of the major conservation reserves in only a few of these regions left the floristic variation of most of these regions poorly represented conservation reserves. About 13 percent of the private property remains uncleared.

Jerdacuttup Land Resource And Capability Study, Geoff Allan Moore, S T. Gee, D Vincent
Resource management technical reports
The Jerdacuttup catchment on the south coast of Western Australia has a number of significant land degradation problems. A soil-landform map of the catchment was produced at a scale of 1:50,000. The map units are a combination of landform and soil type. A land capability assessment was undertaken for five land uses; improved annual pastures, perennial pastures, lucerne, cereal cropping and lupins, using a five class classification.

Salinity And Waterlogging On The Esperance Downs Research Station, D J. Mcfarlane, A T. Ryder
Resource management technical reports
Details the situation on the station so that the demonstration and research programs can be designed and the effect of the treatments assessed. Past work on the station has been briefly summarised and the results of geophysical surveys and additional drilling are given. Surveys of electromagnetic terrain conductivities have shown where salinity is most serious at present. The most deeply penetrating method may have identified areas likely to developing salinity in future.
