Application Of Silicon Nanohair Textured P-N Junctions In A Photovoltaic Device, Michael Small Dec 2018

Application Of Silicon Nanohair Textured P-N Junctions In A Photovoltaic Device, Michael Small

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The goal of this project is to design and develop a fabrication process for a silicon photovoltaic device which incorporates a nanohair textured p-n junction. The silicon nanowires are etched into a silicon wafer, comprising an epitaxial p-layer on n-substrate, via metal-assisted chemical etching (MACE). The resulting nanowires contain p-n junctions that lie along the length of the vertical nanowires. This construct has the potential to increase the optical bandwidth of a silicon photovoltaic device by allowing a greater amount of short wavelength light to reach the junction. In addition, the MACE method of nanofabrication has the potential for decreasing …

Lamination Of Inverted Organic Photovoltaics And Associated Physical Properties, Brian A. Bailey Nov 2012

Lamination Of Inverted Organic Photovoltaics And Associated Physical Properties, Brian A. Bailey

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation is the result of a series of studies involving hot press lamination of inverted organic photovoltaics. It first gives background and develops a lamination process for fabrication. Then, the process is used to answer fundamental questions about organic photovoltaics and to fabricate previously impossible or overly complicated devices. Finally, the author examines the scientific theory which describes the process and aligns that theory with related measurements.

The field of organic photovoltaics is introduced and the lamination process is developed and optimized. In the lamination process, part of the solar cell is deposited onto a rigid substrate, and the …

Imaging And Spectroscopy Of Conducting Polymer-Fullerene Composite Materials, Daeri Tenery Jan 2009

Imaging And Spectroscopy Of Conducting Polymer-Fullerene Composite Materials, Daeri Tenery

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Since the development and optical study of conjugated (conducting) polymers it has become apparent that chain conformation and aggregation at the molecular scale result in complex heterogeneous nanostructured bulk materials for which a detailed insight into morphological, spectroscopic as well as optoelectronic properties and mechanisms is overwhelmingly difficult to obtain. Nanoparticles composed of the conjugated polymer poly (MEH-PPV) and nanocomposite nanoparticles consisting of MEH-PPV doped with 1-(3-methoxycarbonylpropyl)-1-phenyl-C61 (PCBM) were prepared as model systems to study these materials at the length scale of one to a few domains. The MEH-PPV and PCBM doped nanoparticles were analyzed by single imaging/particle spectroscopy (SPS) …

Electron Injection-Induced Effects In Iii-Nitrides: Physics And Applications, William Charles Burdett Jan 2004

Electron Injection-Induced Effects In Iii-Nitrides: Physics And Applications, William Charles Burdett

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This research investigated the effect of electron injection in III-Nitrides. The combination of electron beam induced current and cathodoluminescence measurements was used to understand the impact of electron injection on the minority carrier transport and optical properties. In addition, the application of the electron injection effect in optoelectronic devices was investigated. The impact of electron injection on the minority carrier diffusion length was studied at various temperatures in Mg-doped p-GaN, p-Al[subscript x]Ga[subscript 1-x]N, and p-Al[subscript x]Ga[subscript 1-x] N/GaN superlattices. It was found that Lsubscript n] experienced a multi-fold linear increase and that the rate of change of L[subscript n] decreased …
