A Mathematical Model For Antibiotic Resistance In A Hospital Setting With A Varying Population, Edward H. Snyder May 2013

A Mathematical Model For Antibiotic Resistance In A Hospital Setting With A Varying Population, Edward H. Snyder

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Antibiotic-resistant bacteria(ARB) is causing increased health risk and cost to society. Mathematical models have been developed to study the transmission of resistant bacteria and the efficacy of preventive measures to slow its spread within a hospital setting. The majority of these models have assumed a constant total hospital population with the admission and discharge rates being equal throughout the duration. But a typical hospital population varies from day to day and season to season. In this thesis, we apply variable admission and discharge daily rates to existing deterministic and stochastic models which examine the transmission of single and dual resistant …

Very Cost Effective Partitions In Graphs, Inna Vasylieva May 2013

Very Cost Effective Partitions In Graphs, Inna Vasylieva

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

For a graph G=(V,E) and a set of vertices S, a vertex v in S is said to be very cost effective if it is adjacent to more vertices in V -S than in S.

A bipartition pi={S, V- S} is called very cost effective if both S and V- S are very cost effective sets. Not all graphs have a very cost effective bipartition, for example, the complete graphs of odd order do not. We consider several families of graphs G, including Cartesian products and cacti graphs, to determine whether G has a very cost effective bipartition.

Restricted And Unrestricted Coverings Of Complete Bipartite Graphs With Hexagons, Wesley M. Surber May 2013

Restricted And Unrestricted Coverings Of Complete Bipartite Graphs With Hexagons, Wesley M. Surber

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A minimal covering of a graph G with isomorphic copies of graph H is a set {H1, H2, H3, ... , Hn} where Hi is isomorphic to H, the vertex set of Hi is a subset of G, the edge set of G is a subset of the union of Hi's, and the cardinality of the union of Hi's minus G is minimum. Some studies have been made of covering the complete graph in which case an added condition of the edge set of Hi …

A New Species Of Teleoceras From The Late Miocene Gray Fossil Site, With Comparisons To Other North American Hemphillian Species, Rachel A. Short May 2013

A New Species Of Teleoceras From The Late Miocene Gray Fossil Site, With Comparisons To Other North American Hemphillian Species, Rachel A. Short

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A thorough morphological description of Teleoceras material from the Gray Fossil Site, Gray, Tennessee is provided. This is the only record of a browsing Teleoceras and, as a late Hemphillian locality, represents one of the youngest populations. Linear measurements of post-cranial elements indicate proportional differences between Teleoceras from the Gray Fossil Site and those from other Hemphillian localities. These differences are more pronounced in the elements of the forelimb than in those of the hind limb. Statistical analyses of post-cranial elements from 3 Hemphillian species of Teleoceras suggest that these differences should not be used to separate species. However, the …

Improving The Performance Of The Parallel Ice Sheet Model On A Large-Scale, Distributed Supercomputer, Timothy J. Morey May 2013

Improving The Performance Of The Parallel Ice Sheet Model On A Large-Scale, Distributed Supercomputer, Timothy J. Morey

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, we describe our work to understand and improve the performance and scalability of the Parallel Ice Sheet Model (PISM) on the Ranger supercomputer. PISM enables the simulation of large-scale ice sheets, such as those found in Greenland and Antarctica, which are of particular interest to climate scientists due to their potential to contribute to sea-level rise.

PISM has a unique parallel architecture that is designed to take advantage of the computational resources available on state-of-the-art supercomputers. The problem, however, is that even though PISM can run without modifcation on a supercomputer, it is generally unable to do …

A Variety Of Proofs Of The Steiner-Lehmus Theorem, Sherri R. Gardner May 2013

A Variety Of Proofs Of The Steiner-Lehmus Theorem, Sherri R. Gardner

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Steiner-Lehmus Theorem has garnered much attention since its conception in the 1840s. A variety of proofs resulting from the posing of the theorem are still appearing today, well over 100 years later. There are some amazing similarities among these proofs, as different as they seem to be. These characteristics allow for some interesting groupings and observations.

Study Of Immobilizing Cadmium Selenide Quantum Dots In Selected Polymers For Application In Peroxyoxalate Chemiluminescence Flow Injection Analysis, Christopher S. Moore May 2013

Study Of Immobilizing Cadmium Selenide Quantum Dots In Selected Polymers For Application In Peroxyoxalate Chemiluminescence Flow Injection Analysis, Christopher S. Moore

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Two batches of CdSe QDs with different sizes were synthesized for immobilizing in polyisoprene (PI), polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA), and low-density polyethylene (LDPE). The combinations of QDs and polymer substrates were evaluated for their analytical fit-for-use in applicable immunoassays. Hydrogen peroxide standards were injected into the flow injection analyzer (FIA) constructed to simulate enzyme-generated hydrogen peroxide reacting with bis-(2,4,6-trichlorophenyl) oxalate.

Linear correlations between hydrogen peroxide and chemilumenscent intensities yielded regression values greater than 0.9750 for hydrogen peroxide concentrations between 1.0 x 10-4 M and 1.0 x 10-1 M. The developed technique’s LOD was approximately 10 ppm. Variability of the prepared …

Universal Cycles For Some Combinatorial Objects, Andre A. Campbell May 2013

Universal Cycles For Some Combinatorial Objects, Andre A. Campbell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A de Bruijn cycle commonly referred to as a universal cycle (u-cycle), is a complete and compact listing of a collection of combinatorial objects. In this paper, we show the power of de Bruijn's original theorem, namely that the cycles bearing his name exist for n-letter words on a k-letter alphabet for all values of k,n, to prove that we can create de Bruijn cycles for multi-sets using natural encodings and M-Lipschitz n-letter words and the assignment of elements of [n]={1,2,...,n} to the sets in any labeled subposet of the Boolean lattice; de Bruijn's theorem corresponds to the case …

A Comparison Of Leading Database Storage Engines In Support Of Online Analytical Processing In An Open Source Environment, Gabriel Tocci May 2013

A Comparison Of Leading Database Storage Engines In Support Of Online Analytical Processing In An Open Source Environment, Gabriel Tocci

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Online Analytical Processing (OLAP) has become the de facto data analysis technology used in modern decision support systems. It has experienced tremendous growth, and is among the top priorities for enterprises. Open source systems have become an effective alternative to proprietary systems in terms of cost and function. The purpose of the study was to investigate the performance of two leading database storage engines in an open source OLAP environment. Despite recent upgrades in performance features for the InnoDB database engine, the MyISAM database engine is shown to outperform the InnoDB database engine under a standard benchmark. This result was …

Compound Identification Using Penalized Linear Regression., Ruiqi Liu May 2013

Compound Identification Using Penalized Linear Regression., Ruiqi Liu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this study, we propose a new method for compound identification using penalized linear regression. Compound identification is often achieved by matching the experimental mass spectra to the mass spectra stored in a reference library based on mass spectral similarity. In the context of the linear regression, the response variable is an experimental mass spectrum (i.e., query) and all the compounds in the reference library are the independent variables. However, the number of compounds in the reference library is much larger than the range of m/z values so that the data become high dimensional data with suffering from singularity. For …

Using Neural Networks To Provide Local Weather Forecasts, Andrew Culclasure Apr 2013

Using Neural Networks To Provide Local Weather Forecasts, Andrew Culclasure

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Artificial neural networks (ANNs) have been applied extensively to both regress and classify weather phenomena. While one of the core strengths of neural networks is rendering accurate predictions with noisy datasets, there is currently not a significant amount of research focusing on whether ANNs are capable of producing accurate forecasts of relevant weather variables from small-scale, imperfect datasets. Also, there is not a significant amount of research focusing on the forecasting performance of neural networks applied to weather datasets that have been temporally rolled-up from a base dataset. In this paper, a survey of existing research on applying ANNs to …

Approximate Similarity Reduction, Rui Zhang Apr 2013

Approximate Similarity Reduction, Rui Zhang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The nonlinear K (n;1) equation with damping is investigated via the approximate homotopy symmetry method and approximate homotopy direct method. The approximate homotopy symmetry and homotopy similarity reduction equations of different orders are derived and the corresponding homotopy series reduction solutionsare obtained. As a result, the formal coincidence for both methods is displayed.

Variational Methods On Elastic Curves, Daniel D. Rocker Apr 2013

Variational Methods On Elastic Curves, Daniel D. Rocker

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis we investigate elastic curves. These are curves with minimal bending energy as measured by the total squared curvature functional. We show that these can be computed by evolving curves in the direction of the negative gradient in certain Hilbert space settings. By discretizing the curves and using numerical integration, we compute approximate minimizers and display using computer graphics. We propose a conjecture based on the rotation number of a curve that predicts the critical point curves that minimize bending energy.

Statistical Properties Of The Mc-Dagum And Related Distributions, Sasith Rajasooriya Apr 2013

Statistical Properties Of The Mc-Dagum And Related Distributions, Sasith Rajasooriya

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, we present a new class of distributions called Mc-Dagum distribution. This class of distributions contains several distributions such as beta-Dagum, beta-Burr III, beta-Fisk and Dagum distributions as special cases. The hazard function, reverse hazard function, moments and mean residual life function are obtained. Inequality measures, entropy and Fisher information are presented. Maximum likelihood estimates of the model parameters are given.

Solid Phase Extraction Room Temperature Fluorescence Spectroscopy For The Direct Quantification Of Monohydroxy Metabolites Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons In Urine Samples, Korina Jesusa Calimag Jan 2013

Solid Phase Extraction Room Temperature Fluorescence Spectroscopy For The Direct Quantification Of Monohydroxy Metabolites Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons In Urine Samples, Korina Jesusa Calimag

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) are important environmental pollutants generally formed during incomplete combustion of organic matter containing carbon and hydrogen. Introduced into the human body by adsorption through the skin, ingestion or inhalation, the biotransformation processes of PAH lead to the formation of multiple metabolites. Due to the short elimination lifetime from the body, the quantitative determination of monohydroxy-PAH (OH-PAH) in urine samples provides accurate information on recent exposure to environmental PAH. Urine analysis of OH-PAH with established methodology relies on sample clean-up and pre-concentration followed by chromatographic separation and quantification. Although chromatographic techniques provide reliable results in the analysis …

High Flux Isolated Attosecond Pulse Generation, Yi Wu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis outlines the high intensity tabletop attosecond extreme ultraviolet laser source at the Institute for the Frontier of Attosecond Science and Technology Laboratory. First, a unique Ti:Sapphire chirped pulse amplifier laser system that delivers 14 fs pulses with 300 mJ energy at a 10 Hz repetition rate was designed and built. The broadband spectrum extending from 700 nm to 900 nm was obtained by seeding a two stage Ti:Sapphire chirped pulse power amplifier with mJ-level white light pulses from a gas filled hollow core fiber. It is the highest energy level ever achieved by a broadband pulse in a …

Enhanced Two-Photon Absorption In A Squaraine-Fluorene-Squaraine Dye: Design, Synthesis, Photophysical Properties, And Solvatochromic Behavior, William Moreshead Jan 2013

Enhanced Two-Photon Absorption In A Squaraine-Fluorene-Squaraine Dye: Design, Synthesis, Photophysical Properties, And Solvatochromic Behavior, William Moreshead

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The discovery of any new technology is usually accompanied by a need for new or improved materials which make that technology useful in practical applications. In the case of two-photon absorption (2PA) this has truly been the case. Since its first demonstration in 1961, there has been an ever increasing quest to understand the relationships between two-photon absorption and the structure of two-photon absorbing materials. This quest has been motivated by the many applications for 2PA which have been reported, including fluorescence bioimaging, 3D microfabrication, 3D optical data storage, upconverted lasing, and photodynamic therapy. The work presented in this dissertation …

Development Of Micro Volume Dna And Rna Profiling Assays To Identify The Donor And Tissue Source Of Origin Of Trace Forensic Biological Evidence, Brittany Morgan Jan 2013

Development Of Micro Volume Dna And Rna Profiling Assays To Identify The Donor And Tissue Source Of Origin Of Trace Forensic Biological Evidence, Brittany Morgan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In forensic casework analysis it is necessary to obtain genetic profiles from increasingly smaller amounts of biological material left behind by perpetrators of crime. The ability to obtain profiles from trace biological evidence is demonstrated with so-called ‘touch DNA evidence’ which is perceived to be the result of DNA obtained from shed skin cells transferred from donor to an object or person during physical contact. However, the current method of recovery of trace DNA involves cotton swabs or adhesive tape to sample an area of interest. This "blindswabbing" approach may result in the recovery of biological material from different individuals …

Squaraine Dyes, Design And Synthesis For Various Functional Materials Applications, Yuanwei Zhang Jan 2013

Squaraine Dyes, Design And Synthesis For Various Functional Materials Applications, Yuanwei Zhang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation contains the synthesis and characterization of squaraine based new functional materials. In the first part of this thesis work, a water soluble benzothiazolium squaraine dye was synthesized with pyridium pendents, and controlled aggregation properties were achieved. After formation of partially reversible J-aggregation on a polyelectrolyte (poly(acryl acid) sodium salt) template, the nonlinear, two-photon absorption cross section per repeat unit was found to be above 30-fold enhanced compared with nonaggregate and/or low aggregates. Using a similar strategy, sulfonate anions were introduced into the squaraine structure, and the resulting compounds exhibited good water solubilities. A ‘turn on’ fluorescence was discovered …

Optically Induced Forces In Scanning Probe Microscopy, Dana Kohlgraf-Owens Jan 2013

Optically Induced Forces In Scanning Probe Microscopy, Dana Kohlgraf-Owens

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The focus of this dissertation is the study of measuring light not by energy transfer as is done with a standard photodetector such as a photographic film or charged coupled device, but rather by the forces which the light exerts on matter. In this manner we are able to replace or complement standard photodetector-based light detection techniques. One key attribute of force detection is that it permits the measurement of light over a very large range of frequencies including those which are difficult to access with standard photodetectors, such as the far IR and THz. The dissertation addresses the specific …

Partially Integrable Pt-Symmetric Hierarchies Of Some Canonical Nonlinear Partial Differential Equations, Keri Pecora Jan 2013

Partially Integrable Pt-Symmetric Hierarchies Of Some Canonical Nonlinear Partial Differential Equations, Keri Pecora

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation, we generalize the work of Bender and co-workers to derive new partially-integrable hierarchies of various PT -symmetric, nonlinear partial differential equations. The possible integrable members are identified employing the Painlev´e Test, a necessary but not sufficient integrability condition, and are indexed by the integer n, corresponding to the negative of the order of the dominant pole in the singular part of the Painlev´e expansion for the solution. For the PT -symmetric Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation, as with some other hierarchies, the first or n = 1 equation fails the test, the n = 2 member corresponds to …

Novel Optical Properties Of Metal Nanostructures Based On Surface Plasmons, Haining Wang Jan 2013

Novel Optical Properties Of Metal Nanostructures Based On Surface Plasmons, Haining Wang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Surface plasmons have been attracted extensive interests in recent decades due to the novel properties in nanometer sized dimensions. My work focused on the novel optical properties of metal nanostructures based on surface plasmons using theoretical simulation methods. In the first part, we investigated metal nanofilms and nanorods and demonstrated that extremely low scattering efficiency, high absorption efficiency and propagation with long distance could be obtained by different metal nanostructures. With a perforated silver film, we demonstrated that an extremely low scattering cross section with an efficiency of less than 1% can be achieved at tunable wavelengths with tunable widths. …

Numerical Simulations For The Flow Of Rocket Exhaust Through A Granular Medium, Kristina Kraakmo Jan 2013

Numerical Simulations For The Flow Of Rocket Exhaust Through A Granular Medium, Kristina Kraakmo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Physical lab experiments have shown that the pressure caused by an impinging jet on a granular bed has the potential to form craters. This poses a danger to landing success and nearby spacecraft for future rocket missions. Current numerical simulations for this process do not accurately reproduce experimental results. Our goal is to produce improved simulations to more accurately and effi- ciently model the changes in pressure as gas flows through a porous medium. A two-dimensional model in space known as the nonlinear Porous Medium Equation as it is derived from Darcy’s law is used. An Alternating-Direction Implicit (ADI) temporal …

Engineering And Application Of Ultrafast Laser Pulses And Filamentation In Air, Nicholas Barbieri Jan 2013

Engineering And Application Of Ultrafast Laser Pulses And Filamentation In Air, Nicholas Barbieri

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Continuing advances in laser and photonic technology has seen the development of lasers with increasing power and increasingly short pulsewidths, which have become available over an increasing range of wavelengths. As the availability of laser sources grow, so do their applications. To make better use of this improving technology, understanding and controlling laser propagation in free space is critical, as is understanding the interaction between laser light and matter. The need to better control the light obtained from increasingly advanced laser sources leads to the emergence of beam engineering, the systematic understanding and control of light through refractive media and …

High Energy, High Average Power, Picosecond Laser Systems To Drive Few-Cycle Opcpa, Andreas Vaupel Jan 2013

High Energy, High Average Power, Picosecond Laser Systems To Drive Few-Cycle Opcpa, Andreas Vaupel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The invention of chirped-pulse amplification (CPA) in 1985 led to a tremendous increase in obtainable laser pulse peak intensities. Since then, several table-top, Ti:sapphire-based CPA systems exceeding the 100 TW-level with more than 10 W average power have been developed and several systems are now commercially available. Over the last decade, the complementary technology of optical parametric chirped-pulse amplification (OPCPA) has improved in its performance to a competitive level. OPCPA allows direct amplification of an almost-octave spanning bandwidth supporting few-cycle pulse durations at center wavelengths ranging from the visible to the mid-IR. The current record in peak power from a …

Pulsed Tm-Fiber Laser For Mid-Ir Generation, Pankaj Kadwani Jan 2013

Pulsed Tm-Fiber Laser For Mid-Ir Generation, Pankaj Kadwani

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The thulium fiber laser has gained interest due to its long emission wavelength, large bandwidth (~1.8 – 2.1 µm), high efficiencies (~60 %), and high output power levels both in cw as well as pulsed regimes. Applications like remote sensing, machining, medical tissue ablation, and mid-infrared generation benefit from high peak power thulium laser sources. Pulsed thulium fiber laser systems are advancing rapidly towards higher peak power levels and are becoming the preferred sources for these applications. This dissertation work describes the development of novel nanosecond pulsed thulium fiber laser systems with record high peak power levels targeting mid-infrared generation. …

Fast-Response Liquid Crystals For Photonic And Display Applications, Jie Sun Jan 2013

Fast-Response Liquid Crystals For Photonic And Display Applications, Jie Sun

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Liquid crystal devices are attractive for many applications such as information displays, spatial light modulators and adaptive optics, because their optical properties are electrically tunable. However, response time of liquid crystal devices is a serious concern for many applications especially for those who require large phase modulation (≥2π). This is because a thick LC layer is usually needed to achieve a large phase shift while the response time of a nematic LC is highly determined by the cell gap.

An Exploration Of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Direct Manipulation Through 3d Spatial Interaction, Kevin Pfeil Jan 2013

An Exploration Of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Direct Manipulation Through 3d Spatial Interaction, Kevin Pfeil

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

We present an exploration that surveys the strengths and weaknesses of various 3D spatial interaction techniques, in the context of directly manipulating an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV). Particularly, a study of touch- and device- free interfaces in this domain is provided. 3D spatial interaction can be achieved using hand-held motion control devices such as the Nintendo Wiimote, but computer vision systems offer a different and perhaps more natural method. In general, 3D user interfaces (3DUI) enable a user to interact with a system on a more robust and potentially more meaningful scale. We discuss the design and development of various …

Smooth And Non-Smooth Traveling Wave Solutions Of Some Generalized Camassa-Holm Equations, Taslima Rehman Jan 2013

Smooth And Non-Smooth Traveling Wave Solutions Of Some Generalized Camassa-Holm Equations, Taslima Rehman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis we employ two recent analytical approaches to investigate the possible classes of traveling wave solutions of some members of recently derived integrable family of generalized Camassa-Holm (GCH) equations. In the first part, a novel application of phase-plane analysis is employed to analyze the singular traveling wave equations of four GCH equations, i.e. the possible non-smooth peakon, cuspon and compacton solutions. Two of the GCH equations do no support singular traveling waves. We generalize an existing theorem to establish the existence of peakon solutions of the third GCH equation. This equation is found to also support four segmented, …
