Population Dynamics Of Young-Of-The-Year Striped Bass, Morone Saxatilis, Populations, Based On Daily Otolith Increments, Lisa L. Kline Jan 1990

Population Dynamics Of Young-Of-The-Year Striped Bass, Morone Saxatilis, Populations, Based On Daily Otolith Increments, Lisa L. Kline

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Validation of daily increment deposition in otoliths of juvenile striped bass up to 80 days of age was provided through sequential sacrifice of known age hatchery-reared fish in 1987 and 1989, and through tetracycline marking of otoliths of cage-cultured striped bass in 1989. Ages of fish between 80-110 days old were consistently underestimated by 1-3 growth increments. Known age juvenile striped bass were raised in the laboratory in 1989 under controlled environmental conditions. These experiments provided evidence of an endogenous circadian rhythm controlling daily increment deposition in juvenile striped bass otoliths. Juvenile striped bass were collected in the 4 Virginia …

Injection Efficiency Of Bound Modes, Claudio Oliveira Egalon Jan 1990

Injection Efficiency Of Bound Modes, Claudio Oliveira Egalon

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Previous work on efficiency of light injection into the core of a fiber from a thin film and a bulk distribution of sources in the cladding, have made use of the fields of a weakly guiding fiber. This approximation simplifies the analysis of the power efficiency by introducing universal values for the eigenvalues of different fibers with same {dollar}V{dollar}-number, but can not predict accurately the behavior of the injected light into a fiber with arbitrary differences in indices of refraction. We have used the exact field solution in the expressions of the power efficiency, {dollar}P\sb{lcub}\rm eff{rcub}{dollar}, and analyzed its behavior …

A Dynamic Failure Model For Performing Propagation And Infection Analysis On Computer Programs, Jeffrey Mark Voas Jan 1990

A Dynamic Failure Model For Performing Propagation And Infection Analysis On Computer Programs, Jeffrey Mark Voas

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

This thesis introduces a methodology for determining program locations where faults can easily hide. It is a program structure-based model that analyzes program flow both statically and dynamically; each program location is analyzed relative to its preceding locations and succeeding locations. A statistical model termed propagation analysis studies the relation between incorrect internal data states and their affect on the output. Infection analysis is a statistically model which studies the relation between classes of faults and internal data states. Together these two models combine to form one model of analyzing programs termed Propagation and Infection Analysis (PIA).;PIA employs aspects of …

Atmospheric Input Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons To The Sea Surface Microlayer, Lino J. Gallo Jan 1990

Atmospheric Input Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons To The Sea Surface Microlayer, Lino J. Gallo

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Atmospheric input of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) to water was studied and the effects of sea surface microlayer (SSM) determined. The York River system and the Perrin River areas were monitored with a drum skimmer and a high volume air sampler. Experiments were conducted in the laboratory under controlled conditions. The SSM extracted vapor phase PAH of low molecular weight from the air, and there, aromatic compounds went from dissolved into particulate phase very rapidly. Water covered with a natural SSM received much less atmospheric input of PAH than water without SSM in a given period of time. Henry's law …

The Diffusion Of Muonic Hydrogen Atoms In Hydrogen Gas, Guo Fu Chen Jan 1990

The Diffusion Of Muonic Hydrogen Atoms In Hydrogen Gas, Guo Fu Chen

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

This experiment measured the time distribution of muonic hydrogen atoms which were formed when negative muons were brought to rest in H{dollar}\sb2{dollar} gas, containing Au target foils, at five pressures (750 mbar, 375 mbar, 188 mbar, 94 mbar and 47 mbar at 4.6 mm foil spacing). A Monte Carlo method is applied for deducing the initial velocity distribution, and preliminary results are obtained. The initial velocity distribution of {dollar}\mu{dollar}H atoms is reasonably well described as a 'Maxwellian' velocity distribution with a mean energy E = 3.4 eV. The corresponding muon mean capture energy is obtained: E{dollar}\sb{lcub}\rm c{rcub}{dollar} {dollar}\approx{dollar} 34 eV …

Cross-Shore And Longshore Sediment Size Distribution On Southern Currituck Spit, North Carolina, Lauro Julio Calliari

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Using Q-mode factor analysis, 87 surficial sediment samples collected from Duck and Whalehead beach, North Carolina, were analyzed using the weight percent of the gravel and sand fraction subdivided at 0.5 phi class interval as variables. An additional data set composed of 178 surficial sediment samples from Duck beach (bimodal) and Coquina beach (unimodal fine) representing three years of sampling at monthly intervals were analyzed by the same technique using only the sand fraction. The spatial and temporal patterns of sediment factor groups support three main inferences. (1) Bimodal beaches display a more distinct sediment zonation than unimodal beaches. (2) …

Comparative Community Structure Of Surf-Zone Fishes In The Chesapeake Bight And Southern Brazil, Cassiano Monteiro-Neto Jan 1990

Comparative Community Structure Of Surf-Zone Fishes In The Chesapeake Bight And Southern Brazil, Cassiano Monteiro-Neto

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

The structure of surf-zone fish communities at Cassino (western South Atlantic, WSA) and the Chesapeake Bight (western North Atlantic, WNA) is described using historical beach seine data, to examine similarities between geographically isolated fish communities. Numerical classification, ANCOVA, Shanon-Wiener diversity and its components, and species rarefaction are used to describe fish community structure: (a) within habitat (Cassino); (b) within region (Chesapeake Bight); (c) within the western Atlantic (comparison between Cassino and the Chesapeake Bight). The surf-zone fish community at Cassino had a low diversity and was dominated by a few species. Seasonal periods identified by cluster analysis correlated well with …

An Investigation Of Impediments To Commercial Shellfish Mariculture In Virginia, Robert Charles Neikirk Jan 1990

An Investigation Of Impediments To Commercial Shellfish Mariculture In Virginia, Robert Charles Neikirk

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

A nationwide survey of shellfish mariculturists was used in conjunction with a literature review and review of state and federal laws and regulations, to identify impediments to commercial shellfish mariculture development. The results of the survey and reviews were utilized to identify likely impediments to commercial shellfish mariculture in Virginia and to develop recommendations to address the identified impediments, should Virginia wish to pursue efforts to enhance development of this industry. This study suggests there are state laws, regulations, and policies which act as impediments to commercial shellfish mariculture development in Virginia. Mar,y of the identified regulatory impediments result from …

Effects Of Low Dissolved Oxygen On The Macrobenthos Of The Lower Rappahannock River, Chesapeake Bay, Roberto Javier Llanso Jan 1990

Effects Of Low Dissolved Oxygen On The Macrobenthos Of The Lower Rappahannock River, Chesapeake Bay, Roberto Javier Llanso

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

The lower Rappahannock River, a subestuary of the Chesapeake Bay, is affected by seasonal low dissolved oxygen events that are intermittent and vary in intensity. Overall, macrobenthic abundance and species number were low, decreasing towards the channel and upriver, where dissolved oxygen concentrations were lowest. Mortality of macrobenthos in early summer was attributed to hypoxia. Species abundances and number declined with the onset of hypoxia, and did not recover in the deep channel until the fall. Tolerance of macrobenthos to hypoxia appeared to be species-specific. Recruitment of hesionid polychaetes occurred in summer during normoxia, but mortality followed during hypoxia, suggesting …

Inner Continental Shelf Benthic Boundary Layer Dynamics And Suspended Sediment Transport, Sung Chan Kim Jan 1990

Inner Continental Shelf Benthic Boundary Layer Dynamics And Suspended Sediment Transport, Sung Chan Kim

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

An experiment conducted over the shoreface at Duck, North Carolina in 1985 embraced both fair-weather low energy and storm-related high energy conditions. to differentiate the diffusion and advection processes of suspended sediments under the high energy conditions from those under the low energy conditions, numerical modeling and the analysis of field data are exercised. A simple two-layer eddy viscosity wave-current combined boundary layer model is developed. The modeled characteristics of the boundary layer are incorporated with a diffusion equation to give suspended sediment concentration profiles. A velocity scale related to factors other than turbulent diffusion is formulated, representing the diffusion …
