Relaxation Time Of The Order Parameter In A High-Temperature Superconductor, G.L. Eesley, J. Heremans, M.S. Meyer, G.L. Doll, Sy_Hwang Liou

Si-Hwang Liou Publications

We present femtosecond time-resolved measurements on the high-Tc superconductor Tl2Ba2Ca2Cu3O10. At temperatures below Tc, we observe a relaxation process which is distinct from the equilibration of hot carriers in the normal state. Our results demonstrate an increasing relaxation rate as the superconducting gap opens. This is consistent with the behavior of conventional metallic superconductors.

Experiments In Aerobic And Anaerobic Biodegradation Of Trichloroethylene, Qiong Liao Dec 1990

Experiments In Aerobic And Anaerobic Biodegradation Of Trichloroethylene, Qiong Liao

Theses

The removal of trichloroethylene (TCE) from industrial waste has been intensively studied in recent years, Biodegradation has been determined to be an effective treatment for TCE in the environment. Many researchers have studied the biodegradation of TOE and obtained successful results based on the use of specific isolated bacteria. At the NJIT Biotechnology Laboratory, a new method is being developed in which immobilized activated sludge is used to degrade several toxic chemicals in various reactor configurations. The objective of this research is to determine if these methods can be extended to treat TCE.

Activated sludge from a wastewater treatment plant ...

Power Law Exponents For A Spreading Front And Growing Interface In An Irreversible Wetting, Evan Willett, Ras B. Pandey Dec 1990

Power Law Exponents For A Spreading Front And Growing Interface In An Irreversible Wetting, Evan Willett, Ras B. Pandey

Faculty Publications

Using computer simulations, the power-law behavior of the interface growth of a spreading fluid is studied in a two-dimensional lattice model. The interface width exponent v and the dynamical exponent k for the evolution of the front are consistent with their dynamical scaling relation. The magnitude of these exponents seems to depend upon the nature of the substrate and the concentration of the carriers of the wetting fluid.

Laser Cvd And Plasma Cvd Of Cro2 Films And Cobalt Doped Cro2 Films Using Organometallic Precursors, Peter A. Dowben, Marshall Onellion

Peter Dowben Publications

Chromium dioxide is deposited as a ferromagnetic layer onto selected portions of a substrate or over the entire substrate. Chromium hexacarbonyl vapor is introduced into a vacuum deposition chamber at e.g. 10 milliTorr and oxygen is introduced at e.g. 15 to 100 milliTorr. A UV laser beam is focused onto the substrate to form the CrO2 layer photolytically. The CrO2 layer can also be deposited by RF plasma deposition. This technique can also be employed for depositing MoC2, WC2, Mo2φ3, MoO2 or WO2. Magnetic recording or memory devices are produced without ...

Beryllium-7 And Lead-210 In The Atmosphere And Surface Snow Over The Greenland Ice Sheet In The Summer Of 1989, Jack E. Dibb Dec 1990

Beryllium-7 And Lead-210 In The Atmosphere And Surface Snow Over The Greenland Ice Sheet In The Summer Of 1989, Jack E. Dibb

Earth Sciences Scholarship

The concentrations of 7Be and 210Pb were measured in surface air and fresh and aging snow samples from Summit (72°20′N, 38°45′W) and Dye 3 (65°10′N, 44°45′W) Greenland, during June and July 1989. The aerosol concentrations of these radionuclides showed rapid variations at both sites, but were nearly twice as high, on average, at Summit. Concentrations in the 16 fresh snowfall events that were sampled also showed wide variability, but the averages were the same at the two sites. The apparent difference in air-snow fractionation and the lack of coherence in ...

Digitized Soil Maps For Iowa, Gerald A. Miller, Robert C. Mortensen Dec 1990

Digitized Soil Maps For Iowa, Gerald A. Miller, Robert C. Mortensen

Proceedings of the Integrated Crop Management Conference

The Iowa Cooperative Soil survey initiated a program in 1987 to transfer printed soil maps in each county soil survey report to an electronic database. The purpose of this cooperative project is to provide a computerized database of the county soil maps to support federal, state, local and private sector decision making concerning use and management of Iowa's soil resources.

Water And Risk Assessment, Vernon N. Houk Dec 1990

Water And Risk Assessment, Vernon N. Houk

Proceedings of the Integrated Crop Management Conference

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to speak to you today about carcinogens in drinking water and water quality standards. In this emotion-filled, media-hyped, chemo-phobic society in which we live, the more we spend to comply with regulations that supposedly reduce the risk of cancer, the less safe the American public seems to feel.

Agriculture: Environmental Problems And Directions, Ubbo Agena, Bill Bryant, Tom Oswald Dec 1990

Agriculture: Environmental Problems And Directions, Ubbo Agena, Bill Bryant, Tom Oswald

Proceedings of the Integrated Crop Management Conference

Review of Iowa's water quality situation has both "good news" and "bad news" components. The "good news" is that since passage of the 1972 federal Clean Water Act, commendable progress has been made in reducing the discharge of municipal and industrial waste pollutants into Iowa's waters. The progress made in reducing pollution from these point sources is attributable to a number of factors, including the enactment of effective laws and regulations, development and implementation of improved waste management practices, and voluntary and enforced compliance.

Long-Term Trends For Selected Iowa Weather Variables, Richard E. Carlson Dec 1990

Long-Term Trends For Selected Iowa Weather Variables, Richard E. Carlson

Proceedings of the Integrated Crop Management Conference

In recent times, the state of climate earth is of concern to many people. Accounts of global warming, ozone holes, floods, droughts, and year-to-year variability of the weather in the decade of the SO's appear in popular media. Much attention has been focused on the possibility of growing crops in a changing environment (Rosenberg, 1981). Actual measurements of changing concentrations of trace gases in the atmosphere give credence to some of these fears (Schneider, 1990). Their actual impact on our weather is, however, controversial (Schneider, 1990). Computer models describing the atmosphere responding to these changes in gaseous composition predict ...

Farmstead Well Assessment, Richard O. Pope Dec 1990

Farmstead Well Assessment, Richard O. Pope

Proceedings of the Integrated Crop Management Conference

Agricultural management practices have increasingly come under general scrutiny as potential sources of water supply contamination. The 1987 Iowa Groundwater Protection Act set a goal of determining these potential contamination sources and to eliminate contamination and restore water quality to the greatest extent practical. One clearly documented path of Iowa groundwater contamination is through farmstead wells. Farmstead well assessment is an organized means to look at farm activities that involve either handling or generation of contaminants near the well head.

The Relationship Of The Virtual Orbitals Of Self-Consistent-Field Theory To Temporary Negative Ions In Electron Scattering From Molecules, Donghai Chen, Gordon A. Gallup Dec 1990

The Relationship Of The Virtual Orbitals Of Self-Consistent-Field Theory To Temporary Negative Ions In Electron Scattering From Molecules, Donghai Chen, Gordon A. Gallup

Gordon Gallup Publications

The theory given here shows how certain of the virtual orbitals of self-consistent field (SCF) theory provide a natural ingredient for constructing basis functions to study the shape resonances associated with temporary molecular ions. We give specific calculations of resonant behavior in H2, N2, ethylene, cyclopropene, and cyclobutene. In addition, we show how the theory can rationalize the relationship between Koopmans' theorem values of the energy of a resonance and the experimental values. Notes On Sufficient Conditions For A Graph To Be Hamiltonian, Michael Joseph Paul, Carmen Baytan Shershin, Anthony Connors Shershin Dec 1990

Notes On Sufficient Conditions For A Graph To Be Hamiltonian, Michael Joseph Paul, Carmen Baytan Shershin, Anthony Connors Shershin

School of Computing and Information Sciences

The first part of this paper deals with an extension of Dirac's Theorem to directed graphs. It is related to a result often referred to as the Ghouila-Houri Theorem. Here we show that the requirement of being strongly connected in the hypothesis of the Ghouila-Houri Theorem is redundant.

The Second part of the paper shows that a condition on the number of edges for a graph to be hamiltonian implies Ore's condition on the degrees of the vertices.

Unpinning Of Gaas Surface Fermi Level By 200 Degrees C Molecular Beam Epitaxial Layer, David C. Look, C. E. Stutz, K. R. Evans

Physics Faculty Publications

Previous attempts to passivate the n‐type (100)GaAs surface have significantly reduced only the surface recombination centers, but not the surface acceptors which pin the Fermi level. Here we show that a 100 Å molecular beam epitaxial layer grown at 200 °C reduces the effective surface potential energy − eϕs from 0.70 to 0.17 eV, nearly eliminates light sensitivity, and permits nonalloyed ohmic contacts. After a 10 min, 450 °C anneal, − eϕs increases only to 0.22 eV.
