Reduction In Salt Deposition On Carbon Nano-Tube Immobilized Membrane During Desalination Via Membrane Distillation, Madihah Saud Humoud

Dissertations

As water scarcity increases globally under the stresses of increasing demand, aquifer depletion, and climate change, the market for efficient desalination technologies has grown rapidly to fill the void. One such developing technology, membrane distillation (MD), has found much interest in the scientific community. MD has also been powered by solar energy and waste heat resources because it can be operated at relatively low temperatures. Recent studies indicate that MD could potentially achieve the efficiencies of state-of-the-art mature thermal desalination technologies, although additional engineering and scientific challenges must first be overcome.

MD can be used to treat high salinity water …

Development Of Flexible Batteries Using Nano-Carbons And Polymers, Zhiqian Wang May 2015

Development Of Flexible Batteries Using Nano-Carbons And Polymers, Zhiqian Wang

Dissertations

Flexible electronics such as wearable equipment, displays, cell phones and smart cards require flexible power sources like batteries. In this thesis, the development of flexible batteries and supercapacitors are presented. Different types of flexible batteries including zinc carbon batteries, primary alkaline batteries, secondary alkaline batteries and zinc air cells are presented, These were designed, fabricated and improved using polymers and nano-carbons like carbon nanotubes (CNTs). CNTs are found to be effective as conductive additives compared to the traditional graphite. Purification is important to remove impurities that lead to side reactions/ corrosions. However, further treatment like carboxylation lead to higher electric …

Nanocarbons As Charge Carriers In Organic Solar Cells, Xinbo C. Lau Jan 2014

Nanocarbons As Charge Carriers In Organic Solar Cells, Xinbo C. Lau

Dissertations

Organic photovoltaics (OPV) are an alternate to conventional silicon and thin film solar cells. They have several advantages such as simple fabrication, low material cost, light weight, and the ability to cover large areas. Typical OPV are based on bulk heterojunction structure consisting of a blend of an electron-donating semiconductor polymer and an electron-accepting molecule. Various approaches have been pursued to improve the performance of OPV: low bandgap polymers, new electron acceptors, processing additives, and tandem cell architecture.

Nanocarbons possess unique physical and chemical properties that can contribute to the enhancement of OPV performance, such as charge carrier mobility, thermal …
