Electric field and plasma density instrumentation on board a sounding rocket launched from Punta Lobos, Peru, detected intense electrostatic waves indicative of plasma instabilities in the daytime equatorial electrojet. Simultaneous measurements taken by the Jicamarca radar showed strong 3-m type 1 electrojet echoes as well as evidence of kilometer scale horizontally propagating waves. The in situ electric field wave spectra displayed three markedly different height regions within the unstable layer: (1) a two-stream region on the topside between 103 and 111 km where the electron current was considered to be strongest, (2) a gradient drift region between 90 and 106.5 …

A review of the experimental and theoretical background to the Condor equatorial electrojet campaign is followed by the presentation and discussion of VHF radar interferometer and HF radar backscatter data taken concurrently with two rocket in situ experiments reported in companion papers (Pfaff et al., this issue (a, b). Both experiments were conducted in strongly driven periods with the on-line radar interferometer displaying signatures of what has been interpreted in earlier radar work (Kudeki et al., 1982) as kilometer scale gradient drift waves. Low-frequency density fluctuations detected by in situ rocket sensors confirm the earlier interpretation. VHF radar/rocket data comparisons …

Both primary and secondary two-stream (Farley-Buneman) waves have been detected by in situ electric field and plasma density probes in the strongly driven daytime equatorial electrojet over Peru. Simultaneous Jicamarca radar observations showed strong vertical and oblique 3-m type 1 echoes, also indicative of the two-stream mechanism. The rocket data show the two-stream region on the topside of the unstable layer to be situated between 103 and 111 km where the electron current was the strongest. This region was characterized by broadband plasma oscillations extending past 1 kHz in the rocket frame. Furthermore, above 106.5 km, where the electron density …

The December 1983 freeze inflicted tremendous damage to the South Texas citrus groves and reduced tree numbers by approximately fifty percent. Additionally, it is believed that Great-tailed grackle (Quiscalus mexicanus) populations have increased over the past few years. With decreased citrus acreage and increased grackle numbers, the severe negative effects are economically significant to the Texas citrus industry.
Grackle damage to grapefruit and oranges differs in type and economic importance. The first is "cosmetic" in nature, small pecks or scratches on the fruit skin, and downgrades the fruit, reducing its value. The second is actual crop loss due …

This document assesses the environmental impacts of the proposed remedial action at the Mexican Hat uranium mill tailings site located on the Navajo Reservation in southern Utah. The site covers 235 acres and contains 69 acres of tailings and several of the original mill structures. The Uranium Mill Tailings Radiation Control Act (UMTRCA) of 1978, Public Law 95-604 (PL95-604), authorized the U.S. Department of Energy to clean up the site to reduce the potential health impacts associated with the residual radioactive materials remaining at the site. Concrete dam and part of the Bonneville Unit of the Central Utah Project, is located about 80 miles east of Salt Lake City, Utah (fig. 1). Upper Stillwater Reservoir will be used to regulate the flows of Rock Creek and South Fork of Rock Creek for release to the Strawberry Aqueduct. The reservoir water surface will be kept constant during the summer but will be lowered about 160 feet during fall and winter releases. The structural height of the dam is 285 feet. Its crest length is 2,800 feet at elevation 8175.5 feet with parapets to elevation 8180.0. The spillway, …

This Flood Insurance Study investigates the existence and severity of flood hazards in Morgan City, Morgan County, Utah and aids in the administration of the National Flood Insurance Act of 1968 and the Flood Disaster Protection Act of 1973. This study has developed flood risk data for various areas of the community that will be used to establish actuarial flood insurance rates and assist the community in its efforts to promote sound floodplain management. Minimum floodplain management requirements for participation in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) are set forth in the Code of Federal Regulations at 44 CFR, 60.3.

This paper discusses results of a computer simulation to investigate the effect of jittering to simulate measurement error. In addition, the classical F ratio, the bootstrap F and the F for ranked data are compared. Empirical powers and p-values suggest the bootstrap is a good and robust procedure and the rank procedure seems to be too liberal when compared to the classical F ratio.

In this report, the programs developed for the analysis of simulated data in multiplex chromatography are written in the ASYST language. The integration of the program modules into a menu-driven, user-friendly prototype program is outlined. The program is developed to allow for flexibility and easy upgrading of the code.
This report examines the calculation procedures potentially useful in multiplex chromatography. Analysis of the mutliplex chromatograms is done by three mathematical methods, Cross-Correlation, Hadamard Transform and Fast Fourier Transform. We have used improved incoherent scatter radar measurements at the Jicamarca Radio Observatory to study the height variation of the F region vertical plasma drift velocity (driven by the zonal electric field) during moderately quiet conditions. Preliminary results indicate a nearly linear change of the vertical drift velocity with altitude between 200 and 700 km, but with considerable day-to-day variations in the value of the slope. On the average, the velocity gradients are positive in the late night and morning periods and negative during the afternoon and evening hours. Basalt outcrops in Curlew Valley consist of several flow remnants and eruptive centers situated along the valley margins. Basalt is also found in association with salic rocks that erupted in the central portion of the valley. The basalts are of probable Pliocene age and were erupted during a period of active extensional tectonics. Since their emplacement, the basalts have been extensively eroded and downfaulted. The present morphology reflects the erosional and depositional processes of prehistoric Lake Bonneville.
Twelve samples were analyzed chemically for major oxides, trace elements, and rare-earth elements. The basalts form a hypersthene normative series ranging from olivine …

Chemical and tritium analyses of groundwater, precipitation and discharge records, fracture orientations, lineaments, and structural, stratigraphic, and topographic relationships have been used to describe the groundwater systems of Mantua Valley, north-central Utah. Groundwater flows through fractured Paleozoic quartzites and carbonate rocks and discharges from eleven perennial springs in Mantua Valley. Permeability in quartzites is the result of intense faulting and jointing. Groundwater in carbonate aquifers flows through fractures and/or fractures modified by solution and discharges as relatively large springs (up to 227 liters per second). Neogene normal faulting, rather than extensive karst processes, has produced valleys which are closed or …

A methodology which calculates a point estimate and confidence intervals for system reliability directly from component failure data is proposed and evaluated. This is a nonparametric approach which does not require the component time to failures to follow a known reliability distribution.
The proposed methods have similar accuracy to the traditional parametric approaches, can be used when the distribution of component reliability is unknown or there is a limited amount of sample component data, are simpler to compute, and use less computer resources. Depuy et al. (1982) studied several parametric approaches to calculating confidence intervals on system reliability. The test …

The Smithfield 7.5' quadrangle is located about 13.8 kilometers (8.6 miles) south of the Utah-Idaho State Line and occupies the central portion of the eastern side of Cache Valley, Utah. The mapped area contains more than 55 square miles. The Bear River Range on the eastern side of the quadrangle contains stratigraphic units ranging from Precambrian to Quaternary age. Cache Valley contains deposits of Tertiary and Quaternary age. Quaternary units in the Smithfield quadrangle are subdivided into thirty-two map units based on age and genesis. Five ages of Quaternary units are identified, and these units are assigned to one of …

Variational principles in classical fluid mechanics and electromagnetism have sprinkled the literature since the eighteenth century. Even so, no adequate variational principle in the Eulerian description of matter was had until 1968 when an Eulerian variational principle was introduced which reproduces Euler's equation of fluid dynamics. Although it successfully produces the appropriate equation of motion for a perfect fluid, the variational principle requires imposition of a constraint which was not fully understood at the time the variational principle was introduced. Synthetic routes toward a B-alkylthiolanthionine derivative, as found in the quinomycin depsipeptide antibiotics, have been studied through a sequence involving as the key intermediates and steps (a) (S) - Z-[(benzyloxycarbonyl)amino]-3,3-dimethoxy-l-propanol (2), prepared from N-benzyloxycarbonyl-L-serine in 3 or 4 steps, (b) N-benzyloxycarbonyl- 0 - tetrahydropyranyl-B,B-(ethylsulfinylethylthio)-alaninol (4a), converted from 2, and (c) attempted Lewis acid catalyzed replacement of alkylsulfinyl function by thiol moiety of cysteine, which gave undesired products. Stability of protecting groups used in this study, which are N,0-isopropylidenyl and tetrahydropyranyl functions in N-protected-L-serinol 20 or 26, under acidic conditions was found to play an important role in determining the optical …

The distribution of landslide type and age was analyzed to determine the causes and timing of landsliding, and to assess landslide hazards in the study area. 1173 landslides and zones of landsliding were mapped on 1:15,840 scale air photos and designated by their style of movement and age. Slides were assigned to one of four age classes based on their degree of morphologic modification visible on air photos. Relative dating (RD) methods previously applied to glacial deposits were used to refine and calibrate the age classification.

The purpose of this thesis was to evaluate a method for testing the appropriateness of accelerated life model. This method is based upon a polynomial approximation. The parameters are estimated and used for testing the appropriateness of the model.
An example illustrates the polynomial method. Real data are applied for this method. Comparison with another method demonstrates that the polynomial method is much simpler and has comparable accuracy.

In many problems involving the solution of a system of nonlinear equations, it is necessary to keep an approximation to the Jacobian matrix which is updated at each iteration. Computational experience indicates that the best updates are those that minimize some reasonable measure of the change to the current Jacobian approximation subject to the new approximation obeying a secant condition and perhaps some other approximation properties such as symmetry.

The Middle Cambrian Langston and Ute formations were studied in the northern portion of the Bear River Range and the south-central part of the Portneuf Range in southeastern Idaho.
The rocks of the Langston and Ute formations were divided into 17 different rock types. The 17 rock types were formed within four recognizable lithofacies: I) Shoal - or Coastal-Peritidal Carbonate Complex; 2) Agitated Shoal; 3) Inner Marine Shelf; and 4) Outer Marine Shelf. Clastic sediments belonging to the Spence Shale Member of the Langston Formation (outer marine shelf) were deposited over the carbonate complex. A transgressive sequence marks the base …

This study examined the effects of seedbed and seedling environment on establishment of early and late seral dominant alpine species. Species studied included late seral dominant forbs (Geum rossii, Artemisia scopulorum, and Polemonium viscosum), early seral dominant forbs (Potentilla diversifolia and Sibbaldia procumbens), a late seral dominant grass (Festuca idahoensis), and early seral dominant grasses (Calamagrostis purpurascens and Deschampsia cespitosa). Germination responses of each species to wet vs. dry cold stratification and light vs. dark conditions were investigated. This report is both a users guide and a programmers manual for running and modifying the program SHAMAT, an interactive matrix calculator. The program is written in Turbo Pascal version 3.0 for MS-DOS computers. This software enables the user to type in matrix equations for solving statistical problems such as multiple regression, analysis of variance, etc. All matrix operations necessary for linear models analysis are included in this program. Since each operation uses a separate subroutine, program enhancement, modification and updating is demonstrated to be easy.

The distribution and movement patterns of fingerling rainbow trout stocked into reservoirs in Utah were investigated with · SCUBA observations and by vertical gill netting. For several weeks after stocking, fingerling trout (ca. 80 mm standard length) were strongly oriented to the shore, and selected habitats providing cover. During the underwater observations, no fish were seen below depths of 2 meters. Two weeks after stocking, the fingerlings were most abundant under docks near where they were planted, indicating that dispersal was relatively slow. Jacob's electivity indices for natural substrates in water 0-1.5 meter deep were in sand, gravel, cobble, boulders …

Personnel from Utah State University, working in cooperation with the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources and the Utah Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit, are attempting to determine various sources of mortality of fingerling rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) stocked into mid-elevation reservoirs in the State. Returns of planted fish are often much below desired levels. Angler surveys indicate that in East Canyon Reservoir, fishermen harvest only about 30% of the fingerling trout stocked, and this is a much higher return than in many other waters.

A Viable Form Of Weyl’S Theory, James Thomas Wheeler

A reinterpretation of the Weyl vector in a Weyl geometry is shown to yield Dirac’s 1951 classical theory of the electron, thereby avoiding the most obvious problems of measurement inherent in Weyl’s original geometric formulation of electromagnetism. This paves the way for the consistency of recent metric-connection theories, for which similar questions of measurement can arise.

An electron heat flow can occur in a partially ionized plasma in response to either an electron temperature gradient (thermal conduction) or an electron current (thermoelectric heat flow). The former process has been extensively studied, while the latter process has received relatively little attention. Therefore a time-dependent three-dimensional model of the high-latitude ionosphere was used to study the effect of field-aligned ionospheric return currents on auroral electron temperatures for different seasonal and solar cycle conditions as well as for different upper boundary heat fluxes. Observations made of the high-latitude E-region with the Chatanika, Alaska (65° N), incoherent scatter radar facility during the summer months of 1976 to 1982 are presented. Fourteen 24-h experiments were performed with altitude resolution between 9 and 24 km. Ion drifts measured during these experiments have been analysed to obtain neutral winds at lower-thermospheric heights. Tidal oscillations are the predominant feature of the neutral winds from 90 to 125 km. The semidiurnal oscillation is particularly strong, attaining peak amplitudes of ≈50 m/s at 110 km. Average semidiurnal tidal phases are in good agreement with previous mid- to hight-latitude observations. …
